Both are pretty awesome. 🙂

We got these from a racing pigeon breeder when they were babies - hand fed them for weeks. They're very tame. They love to cuddle.

We watched the 1995 mini series while I read the book. Those characters were so wonderful that they are forever etched in my mind I believe. Put the 2005 movie on my to watch list though!

The 1995 mini-series was excellent and I have to say that when I watched it with with my mum we both loved it.

That's kind of how I feel about Upstairs, Downstairs, even Downton Abbey, I like those types of class shows. Much is revealed. Downton was more recent, but it illustrated the changes going on in England as the class system started to diminish by forces outside of it's control, technology and job opportunities, and with many Grand Manors, the privileged just not able to keep up with expenses.

Pretty cool book considering I've had a Pigeon for a pet for the last 15 years. Now that I'm married, we have 3! The two we had ended up being male+female so they had a kid (hence 3 pigeons). They're really cool pets, we let them roam the house with bird diapers, and they love to cuddle.

Was quite the read - learned a lot more about them than I wanted to. 😛

How do those diapers attach, up around the front and backs of the wings? How often do they need to be changed? And do they molt a lot? I assume they are not clipped so as unable to fly?

Yeah, the birds diapers take panty liners. So you just snip one of those in half and one goes in each. Drop that in the trash every time and you're good to go.

They go around front of the wings - so you have to pull their wings through it and their feet have to go in as well. So feet first, wrap around, pull wings through.

They weren't clipped at first but we found that they were injuring themselves and damaging things in the house so eventually we clipped. Now they walk around the house like any other pet (and flap their wings, but don't really go anywhere). They love standing on doors, computer monitors, and we have a gym set for them above their cage. 🙂

They're a lot more tame when you clip the wings (not as fright/flighty). But you have to be really careful to clip it right or you can cause bleeding. (I grew up breeding birds).

One last question...where do they sleep? Does weather like thunder bother them? Oh yeah...you’re Southern California. Thunder is rare, right?

They sleep in their cages. Yeah, weather and earthquakes bother them a lot. They like to be held when scared, lol.

Based on a recommendation I got from this thread, I just finished the Nebula and Hugo award winning book, Ender's Game, an interesting SciFi story about children being trained as soldiers to fight off insectoid invaders, slang name, buggers. I'm not calling it the best thing I've ever read, all most all of the book takes place at a war academy, focusing on relationships and manipulation, but it had an intricate plot, with surprising depth, and held my interest. Now I'm thinking about reading the sequel, Speaker For The Dead. 🙂

I wish I could read Speaker for the Dead for the first time again.

Haha. So, to remain on topic. That SuperDove book is really good. You learn a lot about pigeons/doves, how humans over time have raced, bred, and experimented on them. Then it looks at how pigeons are one of the few "wild animals" that don't mind living in cities - author spends time trying to figure out why and comes up with some really good explanations.

<cough> 😛 They make great pets as long as you know how to tame them and work with birds (I grew up with birds).

Alas, my wife would never go for it. 🙂 @BigMcGuire who do you get to baby sit them when you leave town? How long can they get by in their cages with food and water?

I found a local Racing Pigeon breeder on Facebook who sold both of them (babies) for $15 total. They're super easy to breed so there are a lot of breeders around (at least here in the CA high desert). Fancy pigeons and pure-bred definitely get in the $100 range.

They love to spray their food everywhere - one of their favorite activities is to look for seed in grass so if you give them a dish of food, they snap their beaks back and forth spraying food everywhere - they're picky eaters too in captivity (black sunflower seeds only or white sunflower seeds only) - so 2-3 days max if you give them extra big dishes. I have family that will come in and check on them if we're gone longer than that (mother in law lives with us for half of the year). They get really restless if you don't let them out of their cages once every 3-4 days.

I've managed to potty train our pigeons (in the above pics). I use sound and location training - helps keep things clean. Just have to be consistent. 😛

Comment not about pigeons- 😉 I've noticed this in wild birds such as blue jays and grackles. When you have a bird feeder out, they go back and forth with their beaks knocking all the seeds off the feeder and onto the ground for the squirrels. I've had a long time standing grudge with boat tail grackles. 🙂
