What car stereo is perfect for iPhone?

I have a Sony Xplod and it works well. No problems with BT connection now. I have a connector for iPods in the glove compartment if needed as well.

This may be a bit off topic but if anyone is in the market for a new GM vehicle, I would suggest adding the 'My Link' package to the vehicle. It adds Bluetooth and USB/Line-In inputs to your car stereo which all work seamlessly with your iPhone/iPod and also the stereo has an on-screen iPod interface which is set up similar to the actual iPod interface to make it easy to navigate. I got it in my car and it's a GREAT add-on.

You also get a lot of other good features but those are the only iPhone/iPod related ones the package includes.

Do you get Big Brother'd as well?

I keed, I keed :D

(well ......... a little bit)

The IDA-x100 from Alpine is an ideal deck that is strictly made for the use of the ipod or in your case the iphone, not cds. It doesn't play cds. Check out the specs and features of this unit. Also check out this video of the deck on youtube.

I have the cda-9887 from alpine and I absolutely adore it. It has so many features and the sound quality is out of this world. When i get into other peoples' cars I begin to miss the sound in my car. You can really tell the difference. You'll get the same and better with the ida-x100. The biggest thing for me is that it displays your iphone album art and everything, and it handles just like an ipod.

A picture of the bluetooth playing in my car. I mostly use it in this mode.

1999 Honda Passport?

So I'm still curious about integration with a GPS app. It seems that the Parrot MKi9200 or one of pioneer stereo would work well for me but how would these work if I were to go to maps on my iPhone? Could I still access other apps while being directly connected to either a parrot or pioneer? Would the audio from another app still go through my speakers?? Reason I ask is that I'm looking to buy that new TomTom app and it is supposed to have voice directions for turn by turn. I know that there is no stereo that will show the actual map but maybe the voice directions would still come through and I could rely on my phones screen for the map?? While at the same time enjoying the music and phone call capabilities, am I asking for too much LOL

Is this the case on all Pioneer units?

I am very interested in the Pioneer DEH-3100UB but that would be an absolute deal breaker for me. I do not want to control my iPhone's songs through whatever horrid interface is on the stereo.

Sorry, you are talking about the iPhone, not iPod. When I plug my iPhone 3G into the stereo I can still control things with the phone, however, it will not charge from this stereo. But if you plug an iPod into it, the iPod controls cannot be used, but it does charge. The iPod only says "Pioneer" on its LCD.

Are you sure? According to Crutchfield this unit (the DEH-3100UB) will charge and play with iPhone:

iPod Interface: The DEH-P3100UB can control and playback songs on an iPod. This unit supports only iPods with a standard Dock Connector. You can connect your iPod using the unit's front-panel USB input (a dock connector to USB cable, such as the one supplied with your iPod, or the optional 130CDIU50, is required). When connected via USB, you can choose to control the iPod from the head unit or the iPod itself. (This function only works on iPod classic, iPod touch, and 2nd/3rd/4 generation nano only. You can still change songs from the head unit, even when you are controlling the iPod manually.) You can perform multiple search functions, including playlist, genre, artist, album, and alphabetical searches. The headunit will also display your iPod's music file information, including Play Time, Song Title, Artist Name, and Album Title. While connected and the ignition switch is set to ACC or ON, the USB connection will power and charge your iPod. The DEH-P3100UB is compatible with the following iPod models:

iPod nano 1st generation (software version 1.3.1)
iPod nano 2nd generation (software version 1.1.3)
iPod nano 3rd/4th generation (software version 1.1.2)
iPod video 5th generation (software version 1.3.0)
iPod classic 80/120/160GB (software version 1.1.2)
iPod touch 1st/2nd generation (software version 2.0)
iPhone (software version 2.0)
iPhone 3G (software version 2.0).

I bought this unit for the very specific reason that it claimed to work with the iPhone 3g and it does. (bonus, no error pops up when you plug the phone in warning you about turning on airplane mode). The front panel usb port takes your normal ipod dock cable and both charges and controls your iPhone 3g. As another reviewer stated, you can set up the head unit to either allow the iPhone to do the controlling or use the unit to control the iPhone. You can't, unfortunately, do both. The units minimal buttons (the multi function joystick) is very much not intuitive. It does work, it just takes a while to get used to all the controls. The sound is pretty good, but again figuring out the equalizer requires you to RTFM. Overall I'm happy with the unit after a week of use. Now that I'm used to the controls I'm ok using them. Plus there's always an aux input on the front if you need it.

Seems it's just one or the other for controlling the music, which I don't mind. I plan on just using the phone to navigate songs.

When the 3G and new iPods came out Apple decided to take away charging from the firewire port which many third party companies had used for charging. My Alpine IV-W200 doesn't charge the new tall iPod nano or my iPhone. I had to order a small adapter to fix this. While the devices would work perfect they just wouldn't charge.

Think this is what you guys are talking about......probably not :p

I think that only had to do with things like car chargers which were delivering power via firewire, but when Apple removed the ability to charge their devices this way, those kinds of chargers no longer worked.

Since this is USB --> dock connector I don't think that is relevant to this situation (at least, I hope not!)

If you really want the best iPod deck you can have get one of the Alpine i ready models. I've got the older version (2 + years now) of the higher end model listed on the link I provide below and all of my friends are still envious of it. I mostly keep my good old classic 60 GB iPod on it but all of my iPhones still work with it also, even though the deck initially says it's not supported they work & are fully functional (and yes they all charge as well). Only bummer is they've seemed to drop CD capability from the newer models which is the sole reason I have not upgraded as my older one has a CD deck as well. Every now and again I do buy a CD at an actual brick and morder store (I know how 90's) and like to be able to jam it in my ride right away.

I would also suggest scratching Bluetooth and say go with a direct connect cable either USB or the dock cable. I know at least one of the newer higher end Alpine units comes with the cables you need right out of the box. A wired connection as others have already pointed out not only sounds the best but gives you a much faster, smoother GUI experience via your deck's display. Check out the latest Alpine i ready decks here. The best of their best is the unit pictured below (the latest rev of the model I've had for 2+ years now and still going strong) retails for around $330.

Yeah I don't understand the obsession over A2DP. It's going to sound crappy. Why not just get an FM transmitter? The whole reason I got into headunits in the first place was because I really wanted a hardwired solution.

I ordered the Pioneer DEH-P3100UB off of Crutchfield and will be installing it next weekend. Just gotta find the soldering iron.

I just got a Pioneer deck last year and it doesn't charge my phone, but it does play and let me control it through the deck. I usually just put my classic in it.

sorry guys had to quote myself again because no one seems to know anything about this. For those that have a functional head unit like the pioneer, alpine, parrot etc What happens if you go to another app through your phone while it is connected via usb? Can you hear the audio from the app that you are on? see my above posts for reasons why. thanks

The Alpine IDA-X305 is a great unit. It's the only headunit out there that makes the ipod interface convenient instead of irritating. It sounds great (connects through USB) and charges your iphone as well. I got it for $241 shipped from compuplus. You need a separate component if you want Bluetooth, I think it's $100 or so. I'm very happy with it.

Which model? I made sure to check lots of reviews stating the one I got charges/plays music from iPhone 3G (so I assume it'll work with the 3GS...hopefully!)

If I understand correctly what you're asking, the answer is yes (at least for the Alpine iDA-x100). If I'm listening to the iPod on my iPhone and I go to Maps or some other non-audio app, the music will continue playing just fine. If I go to Simplify, Pandora or the audio portion of the MLB At Bat App, the iPod music will fade out and the audio from the app will play.

Does that answer your question?

this is exactly what I'm looking for (I think). I know I don't want a CD player. I just want a digital media player/receiver. This looks to be my candidate. Thanks for posting.
