I wouldn't really call the Alpine IVA-505 "inexpensive".
Sadly the cost is holding me back from upgrading from my Alpine.
Ah, sorry! I meant to type 'expensive'
wasn't trying to patronize you.

I bought this Sony on clearance for $110 from my local Best Buy. Works great with the iPhone's a2dp too!
The online store availability shows online only, but I have seen a few Best Buys here in Texas that still have it.

This may be a bit off topic but if anyone is in the market for a new GM vehicle, I would suggest adding the 'My Link' package to the vehicle. It adds Bluetooth and USB/Line-In inputs to your car stereo which all work seamlessly with your iPhone/iPod and also the stereo has an on-screen iPod interface which is set up similar to the actual iPod interface to make it easy to navigate. I got it in my car and it's a GREAT add-on.
You also get a lot of other good features but those are the only iPhone/iPod related ones the package includes.
A picture of the bluetooth playing in my car. I mostly use it in this mode.

Is this the case on all Pioneer units?
I am very interested in the Pioneer DEH-3100UB but that would be an absolute deal breaker for me. I do not want to control my iPhone's songs through whatever horrid interface is on the stereo.
Sorry, you are talking about the iPhone, not iPod. When I plug my iPhone 3G into the stereo I can still control things with the phone, however, it will not charge from this stereo. But if you plug an iPod into it, the iPod controls cannot be used, but it does charge. The iPod only says "Pioneer" on its LCD.

This unit supports only iPods with a standard Dock Connector. You can connect your iPod using the unit's front-panel USB input (a dock connector to USB cable, such as the one supplied with your iPod, or the optional 130CDIU50, is required). When connected via USB, you can choose to control the iPod from the head unit or the iPod itself. (This function only works on iPod classic, iPod touch, and 2nd/3rd/4 generation nano only. You can still change songs from the head unit, even when you are controlling the iPod manually.) You can perform multiple search functions, including playlist, genre, artist, album, and alphabetical searches. The headunit will also display your iPod's music file information, including Play Time, Song Title, Artist Name, and Album Title. While connected and the ignition switch is set to ACC or ON, the USB connection will power and charge your iPod. The DEH-P3100UB is compatible with the following iPod models:
iPod nano 1st generation (software version 1.3.1)
iPod nano 2nd generation (software version 1.1.3)
iPod nano 3rd/4th generation (software version 1.1.2)
iPod video 5th generation (software version 1.3.0)
iPod classic 80/120/160GB (software version 1.1.2)
iPod touch 1st/2nd generation (software version 2.0)
iPhone (software version 2.0)
iPhone 3G (software version 2.0).
I bought this unit for the very specific reason that it claimed to work with the iPhone 3g and it does. (bonus, no error pops up when you plug the phone in warning you about turning on airplane mode). The front panel usb port takes your normal ipod dock cable and both charges and controls your iPhone 3g. As another reviewer stated, you can set up the head unit to either allow the iPhone to do the controlling or use the unit to control the iPhone. You can't, unfortunately, do both. The units minimal buttons (the multi function joystick) is very much not intuitive. It does work, it just takes a while to get used to all the controls. The sound is pretty good, but again figuring out the equalizer requires you to RTFM. Overall I'm happy with the unit after a week of use. Now that I'm used to the controls I'm ok using them. Plus there's always an aux input on the front if you need it.
Are you sure? According to Crutchfield this unit (the DEH-3100UB) will charge and play with iPhone:
Also found this on an amazon review:
Seems it's just one or the other for controlling the music, which I don't mind. I plan on just using the phone to navigate songs.
So I'm still curious about integration with a GPS app. It seems that the Parrot MKi9200 or one of pioneer stereo would work well for me but how would these work if I were to go to maps on my iPhone? Could I still access other apps while being directly connected to either a parrot or pioneer? Would the audio from another app still go through my speakers?? Reason I ask is that I'm looking to buy that new TomTom app and it is supposed to have voice directions for turn by turn. I know that there is no stereo that will show the actual map but maybe the voice directions would still come through and I could rely on my phones screen for the map?? While at the same time enjoying the music and phone call capabilities, am I asking for too much LOL
I just got a Pioneer deck last year and it doesn't charge my phone, but it does play and let me control it through the deck. I usually just put my classic in it.
sorry guys had to quote myself again because no one seems to know anything about this. For those that have a functional head unit like the pioneer, alpine, parrot etc What happens if you go to another app through your phone while it is connected via usb? Can you hear the audio from the app that you are on? see my above posts for reasons why. thanks
Check out the latest Alpine i ready decks here. The best of their best is the unit pictured below (the latest rev of the model I've had for 2+ years now and still going strong) retails for around $330.
