What car stereo is perfect for iPhone?

This one looks really great too, I'm going to look into this one also and compare between the two. Bluetooth is intriguing...can you charge via the 30-pin cable on that one? I looked at the pics but wasn't sure, maybe I was overlooking something simple.

yep...the iPod connector charges...I have it routed to my glovebox and just keep my ipod classic hooked up to it...but you could use it for your iPhone too

Had Pioneer DEH-P6000UB for a years now, just bought iphone 3gs, everything works like a charm... Pioneer is really good company for car stereo ;)

More info about it here

woohoo!!

Just installed a Pioneer DEH-P3100UB to replace a Sony Xplod unit that has failed for the second time in 4 years (and only had an AUX in port). The Pioneer has a USB port in addition to the aux, and I can verify that the USB charges my iPhone 3GS and the sound is terrific.

I soldered all the connections too. Looks great and sounds great!

I'm so happy to get also get rid of the Kensington LiquidAUX charger/aux combo I was using. It sounded muddy and always had this annoying whine in the background. The Pioneer has absolutely zero background noise (which I attribute solely to my soldering skills!)

I can't believe Best Buy wanted $50 for a geek squad install plus additional money for all the VW-specific accessories to make it fit. Crutchfield sold me the head unit for $20 less than best buy and its included instructions were more than adequate. Saved myself around $90 :)

finally a response to the compatibility of Pioneer with 3GS, cheers to the both of you :) I guess it would be safe to say that the DEH-P7100BT is probably good to go with 3GS as well then. Think I'm gonna go ahead and pull the trigger on this one then. :)

No problem. I too was trying to find this information EVERYWHERE and couldn't. I'm glad to report back that it works with the 3GS. This was a deal breaker for me. if it didn't charge the 3GS it would have to go back.

Are you going to install it yourself?

For some reason Crutchfield doesn't let any double din stereo "fit" my 2001 Lincoln LS. The only stereos with screens that apparently fit are the ones that are single din where the screen slides out, which I don't want.

Disturbing. I wonder if the stereo selector is correct...just seems odd that NO in-dash LCD (or even the Pioneer that was pointed out) will fit according to their site.

actually was going to have it professionally installed. I've never installed a car stereo before so I'm not exactly sure how easy it is or if I have the right tools. How bout yourself?

I've done it several times.

A typical car stereo connects to a wire harness with a rectangular snap plug. This harness is on the 'car side' so to speak.

You can buy an adapter, that snaps into the car harness with leads already wired. all you have to do is solder the bare leads from the adapter to the bare leads of the aftermarket stereo connector (put shrink tubing on beforehand for a nice clean install) by following the wiring diagram.

personally my soldering has revolved more around luck thank skill so far!

That's a sweet looking stereo. Please let me know how this one works for you, hell for the price that's not bad. I think what was making me get into the expensive stuff was the GPS functionality, but w/ the iPhone, I don't exactly need that now. If I could get one w/ XM capability, I could basically eliminate the need for my Harmon Kardon iPod thing and my XM, although I could still keep that option there just in case. Either way that thing looks nice, let me know.

I just installed the FH-P8000BT and it is pretty impressive. It handles bluetooth telephone and usb ipod control of the iphone 3GS very well. I am sure it is similiar to the other Pioneer single DIN units discussed in this thread.

Some cons:

-Trying to search for music through the head unit is very slow and cumbersome when you have alot of music. You cant even hold down the button to scroll forward. Very weird they didnt add this function...makes it almost unusable without playlists.
-When you plug the iphone in it automatically starts playing the ipod which I dont like at all. Not only that, but if you are listening to Pandora and you receive a phone call it will pause Pandora and take the call as expected........ but when the call is ended, the head unit will attempt to start playing the ipod and override Pandora. This really sux, but you simply have to hit play on Pandora to override the ipod and get back to what you were listeing to. It really seems like they were not intending you to stream iphone music apps with this head unit but it will work with a few bugs here and there as long as the ipod has control.

Sorry about rambling, but I am pretty satisfied with the head unit and the sound is excellent, enough that I just bought 4 polk speakers for my car to compliment the head unit.

I picked up the Sony MEX-BT2700 from BB today and installed it in a 1999 Honda Accord coupe.

I paired it with my 3GS. Input passcode 0000 on phone and matched.

BT audio works perfect.
The only thing that shows on the HU display is 'BT Audio'.

All controls must be done thru the iphone (I don't have an ipod/itouch)

Phone usage must all be done thru the handset, no voice control. I didn't try the HU redial function.

The callee is heard fine thru the vehicle speakers but they tell me that hearing me is like the two-cans-and-a-string setup sound.

One other challenge I have is that I cannot get any sound out of the rear speakers. I believe I've tried all the HU setting combos and I know that the physical wiring I did works fine. My one unknown is whether or not the rears worked with the Pioneer that was in it. I don't remember ever trying the fade function with that HU and didn't do it before redoing all the wiring lol.

Ideas?

edit: I pulled a rear speaker and hooked it up to the home stereo .... nothing .... not motion at all in the cone (and the cone ripped easily)

today I finalized my installation when I received the black USB iPod cord (made by Pioneer) from Amazon. Works just like the regular iPod cord except it matches my interior now. Still charges and plays music from the 3GS.

I love DIY projects. Especially when it turns out this nice. :)

Clarion FB275BT

Just an update to say the Clarion FB275 DOES work with my 3GS. After initially failing to get it to work, and looking on the Clarion website and seeing that the 3G was not properly supported, I turned off Bluetooth since that was the only thing I needed it on for. Well a couple of weeks later I turned Bluetooth back on for something else, and when I got in the car, it connected, and tried to stream audio.

I then tried to use the speakerphone, and it also worked, although I had to manually dial from the iPhone itself. Perhaps the 3.1 software will enable me to use the voice dial feature through the head unit as well.

So why did it work now, and not before? Well, I did not have any music on the iPhone, so it would immediately disconnect before completely pairing.

The Clarion website said that auto connect would also not work, but that appears to be working fine as well. The buttons on the head unit will not control the iPod functions, but other than that I am now a happy camper as I do not need to buy a new head unit at this time :)

Note, this head unit does not have a cable to connect to the iPhone, so everything is done through the Bluetooth connection.

I think Clarion is still producing this head unit, so it is an option, although without the full integration of the iPhone plug, it is probably not what most are looking for.

I have the Alpine IDA-X100 and I absolutely love it. It uses the USB cable, but put together with a Proclip it's amazingly convenient and looks great.

Yes. I too have the Alpine iDA-X100 model, which is one of the older Alpine models. It works great with iPods. I have my 120GB Classic hooked up in my glovebox and only take it out to put more songs on it. I also got the Full Speed cable for it to be compatible with the newer model iPod, so the album art doesn't show though. but whatever, it's great!

Just installed one of these in my car:

The JVC KD-R800

Can be found online for around $165 or so.

It's a Dual USB unit, and comes with a bluetooth usb dongle. I am using the bluetooth dongle on the rear USB input. I can make calls, receive calls, and play music over the bluetooth connection with my iPhone 3G running 3.0. The unit picks up your recent, dialed, and missed calls. It also pulls up your phonebook. The usb in the front also works with all ipods and iPhones. Charges and controls the ipod/iphone perfectly. I only plug it in there when I need to charge though. Bluetooth streaming is so much more convenient. And the best thing about this unit is that you can customize the color it glows, which is important in my BMW, since BMW's use an amber interior lighting. So far I've been very happy with this unit.

AVIC F90BT:

works great! I can plug my 3gs in via the usb/ipod cable and have it connected via bluetooth. I can take calls, charge my phone, and listen to pandora all at once. I can also playback movies and stuff.

Here's the link from Crutchfield:
http://outlet.crutchfield.com/p_130F90BT/Pioneer-Premier-AVIC-F90BT.html?cc=02&search=avic+f90bt&tp=20211
And on Amazon it's actually reasonably priced:)

I got mine refurbished on Amazon. I got the necessary adapters from Crutchfield and installed it by myself. I don't know anything about cars or stereos, but it was really easy ... even hacking it wasn't hard :p

When I saw a pic of this stereo on here I had to get one! This is installed in a Jeep Grand Cherokee and as you can see i have a SIRIUS controller attached. I would have liked an all-in-one stereo with GPS and the works, DVD etc, but decided to go low budget.

The stereo works GREAT with the iphone 3GS. Calls are very clear and people can hear me well. The only problem I have with it is music coms in a lot clearer over the blue tooth audio input vs the dock connecter but other then that i really like it.

Does yours charge the 3GS? I'm having a strange but very frustrating problem. The very first time I put my iPhone in the charger, it charged without a problem. Now every time I try it, the Pioneer displays an "Error 19" and the iPhone says charging is not compatible. However, the audio out works fine. Any ideas?

I'm just about to purchase the Pioneer DEH-3100UB, as it ticks all the boxes for me.

There's just one thing that perhaps someone with some experience using one (or a similar one) can answer.

In the instruction manual, it is stated that when using a CD or USB drive, you cannot use the Apple Lossless codec (MP3, WAV, AAC are OK for these, however).

I would need to confirm, however, that Apple Lossless is available when playing from a USB-docked iPhone or iPod as that is the format all my music is in, and that would indeed be a deal-breaker for me.

Can someone try playing a lossless file over USB for me please? Pretty please?? :) :D

Hoping some of you guys can help me out on this one.

I installed a Pioneer DEH-P3100UB in my Jetta about a month ago. It works great with my 3GS (charges, plays music, etc.) but I'm having a very hard-to-diagnose problem.

It seems, sometimes, that when I listen to the radio AND have the iPhone charging via USB the radio becomes unusable. It just sounds like it would if you entered an underwater tunnel -- just all fuzz. It's not quite that bad, but that's the sound that is taking over any music I'd hear. The iPhone isn't playing at this point...it's only plugged in and charging. I can detach the phone and the tuner comes back and sounds great, then immediately replug the phone and it's all back to fuzz. This doesn't happen 100% of the time, and seems to just come and go. The problem is it's completely erratic, so half the time if I want to just throw on a radio station while my phone is charging, I simply can't. Turning the stereo off and on doesn't change this.

Has anyone had an issue like this before? Can anyone think of what may be causing it?

So I should update that ended up going with the Pioneer DEH-P7100BT

DEH-P7100BT.jpg

So far so good, not too bad. Only a couple things that I am a bit dissapointed with. First the remote provided doesn't have the greatest signal. You have to really move it around a bit so that it points directly at the head unit to send signals. Also I thought that the direction buttons would handle most of the navigating through the phone book and playlists but some times you have no choice but to use the head unit (ie. selecting numbers in the phone book). Also there seems to be a some sort of a bug when connecting to 3GS. I have to wait until my car is on to connect my phone otherwise music from the Ipod functions will play for about 5 seconds and then cut out. In that case I have to reconnect the usb to get music playing. After that it's fine. I've brought all these issues up to the Pioneer technical people and they said that there is nothing wrong with my unit and these are just know limitations of the stereo.

Other than the above I'd say I'm happy with the unit. I've got all the bluetooth and Ipod functions that I was looking for. I use the voice recognition often to make calls. Also appreciate that I can take out the Ipod controls and navigate through my Iphone. So all in all its a good unit, not perfect but good enough.

So I am in the same boat. Looking for a head unit for my Tundra. I am planning on getting an Alpine 9886, but I am concerned how my iphone will work with it. I want to be able to control my iphone with the HU, but I also want to be able to use it as a phone if need be. If it is hooked up to the unit, will it still function as a phone? I also looked a the ix101 (sp) option, but not willing to give up the CD just yet.

Any advice would be great. I am going thru Best Buy (because of gift cards), so any other good option would be great.

So I'm looking at upgrading my car stereo to accomodate my iPhone 3GS. Ideally I'm looking for a stereo that will integrate my phone and music into my car speakers. So I stopped by Best buy to see what my options were and this seemed to be the best for cost:

:)

If you like GOOD sound and you have an iPhone (not iPod) then please read some background stuff I have observed at https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/772135/.
'Look for Quantifying Sound quality'

I think there are a number of equally good systems, but I definately think that the power/cable arrangements going to the iPhone may make a subjective difference between a 320kbps track sounding like it was sampled at 128.

I don't think you'll have the problem with new systems, but it happened that I have an 18month old Alpine model - and to cut a long story short, if you use a 18months old car stereo that was fitted up with iPod cable you get no power to the iPhone and the sound loses hifi and becomes ordinary.

Read https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/772135/ for details.

All the best.

If you haven't realized already, that's not a bug. The five second pause you hear is the Bluetooth Audio kicking in since Apple doesn't give users an option to disable AD2P on the iPhone.

DEH-P7100BT.jpg

.

This is a picture of a DEH-P710BT, NOT a DEH-P7100BT. The one pictured is the Premier model that comes with the cables, an IP Aux input, more control of the internal amp and a two year waranty. The 7100 does not. They are virtually identical otherwise.

im currently torn between these 2:

http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/P...ideo/In-Dash/DVD-Receivers/AVH-P3100DVD?tab=B

and

http://www.amazon.com/JVC-Double-DI...4?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1255733314&sr=1-4

planning on getting this as a mount:
http://us.kensington.com/html/17546.html

prices seem very affording for the 2 unit. and its double din dvd player which i what im looking into. i drive a lot. i read that it can play iphone/ipod videos..

i saw a user earlier posted about the JVC, can i get more info from you regarding the unit?

thanks!

WOW , am I glad I came here before buying my new stereo . I have been looking for the past couple weeks and logged in maybe 40 hours trying to find what I need and want in a stereo that works well with the iphone 3g .

Here are the head units I found that work but have different options available.

JVC

JVC Arsenal KD-AHD59
HD Yes /no bluetooth/ front usb and aux

JVC KD-HDR50
HD Yes /no bluetooth/ front usb and aux

JVC KD-R900 3 Sets of 5V preamp outputs
No HD /bluetooth W/dongle inc/ Usb front and back / Aux port

JVC KD-R800 HS-IVi Tuner
No HD /bluetooth W/ dongle inc/ Usb front and back /Aux port

Sony

CDX-GT630UI 2v
HD Ready / no bluetooth / front usb and aux / 3band eq

Kenwood

KDC-BT742U 2.5V 3
HD Radio ready / Bluetooth /built in mic /front usb/front aux/ 3band eq /

KDC-X993 4 v
no hd/Parrot Bluetooth / rear usb / rear aux/

KDC-X693 4v
same as the KDC-993 but no Parrot Bluetooth

KDC-X493 4v
HD Radio ready / No BT / Front USB and Aux

Of course these are just the basics of each unit and should be checked out by yourself to make sure these are the correct options .

After hearing some horrors stories about the HD units (how they cut in and out of HD) I decide to shy away now from them .

I kind of like the option with the front and back usb (not mini usb) ports on the JVC models listed above . These are the units I am leaning towards .
Their remotes look very easy to control (not alot of tiny buttons).

The Boss Audio 750DI someone posted on here looks SWEET , but I can see a few things that would bother me . I would have to take my phone out of its holder to put it in the charger , which would be a pain . The phone doesnt look secure enough . And the lack of a regular USB up front .

Any other ideas out there that I missed that are sure to work with the iphone , please feel free to post .
