Is the Smart Cover compatible with the new iPad? Does the on-off function work?

Yes it is. I decided I didnt want to wait for the skinny and got that and will be ordering a rear shell for it also.

On/off function works fine for me.

I tried the iFrogz Summit case for iPad 2 with the new iPad hoping it could squeeze in, no luck.

I'm currently using the Targus Slim Case. I haven't had any problems with the sleep/wake functionality. It fits great, no excess movement, but for the price ($50USD), the build quality is definitely on the short side.

Tuxedo and Z Case

I am using the Case Mate tuxedo(for ipad 2, everything works), and a Targus Zcase sleeve originally designed for the iPad 1. Picked them both up at Marshalls. The Tuxedo was 30, and the sleeve was 12 I think(ipad 1 case marked down). Makes a great combination as the sleeve is very professional and well made and protective, and the tuxedo is great cause it works like the smart cover and protects the back. The z case is a little loose fitting on just the ipad 3, but is a tight fit with the tuxedo on, perfect combination.

iPad 3 Summit

I tried the iFrogz Summit case for iPad 2 with the new iPad hoping it could squeeze in, no luck.

I did the same with my wifes ipad 2 summit. I ordered their iPad 3 version and it fits fine. But the smart cover auto/on/off doesn't work. I've emailed them to see what they plan to do for replacements. Also, the groves in the cover for the stand positions are more shallow. Mine doesn't like to stay in the first two...because of these things I'm disappointed in this version.

Re-Ordered the Marware Micro-shell for the "New iPad"...

....and a Red Smart cover from Apple

The combo worked great on my iPad 2 and it still retains the slim form factor s well.

Can you post pictures? I'd like to see 2 things:

1) How deep the case is on top of the screen, and....
2) If it makes an audible difference from the way it covers the speaker.

It is very important to realize that, depending on a given manufacturer's methods, it is entirely possible (maybe even likely) that not every case in a particular model line will necessarily work properly to sleep/wake the iPad 3.

With the iPad 2, the polarity of the magnet contained in a third-pary case cover didn't matter (the magnet that activates the iPad's sleep/wake feature). Many (most??) case manufacturers' cases were assembled with the magnet in differing orientations (some with N pole up and some with the S pole up).

Along comes the iPad 3 and the polarity of the magnet in a case cover is VERY important. The sleep/wake sensor in the iPad 3 REQUIRES the correct polarity.

So, just because XYZ case works OK with one person's iPad 3 doesn't necessarily mean that another XYZ case will work OK with another person's iPad 3.

Of the two cases we have, the Maroo Roto II works correctly and the Maroo Moko II does not. Identical construction, just different color leather. And there have already been reports from folks with Roto IIs that don't work and reports from people with Moko IIs that do work.

It's luck of the draw. That is, until all case manufacturer's stop labeling iPad 2 cases as iPad 3 compatible before they are actually tested (on an individual case basis) with an actual iPad 3.

For anyone wondering what the heck I'm talking about, click the link in my signature and watch the video.

I am seriously considering getting the Lifeworks case. It is a mix of iPad 1 & iPad 2 case which I like the design of.

Targus cases are all faulty w/iPad 3

Just confirmed today with Targus that many of the new targus cases are faulty and do not work with the magnetic on/off. This was first confirmed at best buy when we took 2 iPad 3's and tested them with 4 new models, all failing to cooperate with the iPad 3 magnetic sensor. Apparently the magnets are misplaced in the new cases.. After posting my experience on the targus website, I was pleasantly surprised to get a response from their marketing team offering to send me a "tested" case at no extra charge and that I would be able to keep the one I had as a backup. All they asked for was a receipt. I called to confirm the mail and low and behold, it was true and I will see a replacement (correctly manufactured) in about 6-8 weeks. While this seems a long ways away, don't forget I still have my current iPad 3 versavu that works just fine other than the magnetic on / off so I really can't complain. Good for targus to not only acknowledge their manufacturing defect, but to offer to make it right? The rep on the phone said it was "a substantial amount if units that were defective" I would guess that the number is in the millions assuming that ipadjust sold 3 million units this past weekend and that targus was about the only company that had cases available at launch. So buyer beware, if the auto on offs is important to you then this is not the case for you right now, however if that's not a problem and you don't mind using their case for free until the redesigned one is available then it's a great case. This stems from apple :apple: not working with vendors to allow them to be prapaired for new product launch. Hope this review helps those who are questioning the targus...

I am torn between the Marware microshell folio (love it on my iPad 2) and the Scosche Folio IQ p2....any experiences with the latter?

I couldn't find any review of the Scosche either, so I bought one and made my own! You can watch it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XiPp17OBSdY

Be careful if ordering one, because Scosche had the case listed as an iPad 2 / New iPad case on their website last week, but now it says it's iPad 2 compatible only. I think they jumped the gun assuming it was compatible, then changed that once they actually had a new iPad in hand. As you can see from the review, mine fit (barely), so there are chances that their QC is off just enough that some may not fit. I've contacted Scosche via twitter to see if they're making a new version for the new iPad, but I haven't heard back yet.

I got the Maroo Moko case on the 50% off deal. I'm very happy with it, and Maroo's excellent customer service. I am also planning to get a smart cover back shell combo that has a magnet on the back to hold the cover in place when folded all the way back. I'm waiting for more cases and reviews to come out.

I'm using the Casemate Gelli for iPad 2 on the back and a static cling screen protector from Walmart for the back for temporary protection, more specifics about my experience in this thread. Using the Targus A7 sleeve for storage and transportation.

Do you mind me asking if you can talk more about the nedrelow sleeve? Does the wool ever get "torn"? Or loose? Like does the frantic ever get undone? Is it easy to slide the iPad in and out? Thanks.

Sorry, missed your question initially. It doesn't get torn, but I noticed that for the first week or two, it "shed" a little bit, but it has since stopped leaving little strands of wool all over everything I set it down on. It's pretty easy to insert and remove the iPad (I have the one built for the iPad plus a Smart Cover).

Otterbox defender

Won't post pics cause they already been posted. Adds a bit of heft to the iPad but the piece of mind is worth it...and it's not that bad. The stand in the removable part is awesome. The screen protector does somewhat mute the retina screen given its matte finish. Not sure if the anti glare feature really works. Final conclusion is that I'd buy it again. Very happy with otterbox.

I'm using a tarsus versavu. I bought it from best buy, it's functional and I think it really protects my iPad when it's especially in my big bag however I think it's chunky. I'm in search for something stylish yet protective enough.
