How many continents are there?

Europe here.

By the way, question to non-Americans... how many continents do you consider there are?

When I came to France many years ago (from the US) I was surprised to find out that the French consider there are just five continents; America (North and South), Europe, Africa, Asia (includes Australia) and Antarctica. After all this time, I still never figured out if that was a French thing or a European thing, or an everyone-but-America thing. There's even a French rap group here called "The Sixth Continent."

There are five continents, yes. What else would it be?

Edit: I didn't read your post... There are five continents as I've learned it, Australia is one and Antarctica doesn't count.

Correction... my wife just brought it to my attention that "The Sixth Continent" not a rap group -- it's a music festival. My bad. I just remember always seeing a poster with a bunch of people on it that looked like rappers.

Um, maybe that's what it was then (Australia, not Antarctica). In the U.S., we are taught that there are seven.

So if Antarctica is the sixth, what is the seventh? I'm getting confused... so South America and Antarctica makes it seven in total, right?

Now I'm not really sure what we were taught. I seem to remember that the five olympic rings symbolises the five continents (America as one).

Edit: Just beaten!

Europe
Asia
North America
South America
Africa
Australia (Oceania also seems popular)
Antarctica

I know that in many cases the Americas are considered one continent. I was always taught they were separate, not that it really matters. :)

Looking at the poll results, I thought there might be a few more Aussies around, but apparently not.

Yep, seven continents.

As for oceans, there's seven of them too:

North Pacific
South Pacific
North Atlantic
South Atlantic
Indian
Southern
Arctic

Then there's a lot more Seas too.

How can they just leave Australia out in so many of them, not that I care, I just find it strange. :)

Yeah, but what's even weirder is that Antarctica shows up strong in every combo. Go Antarctica!!

What is the point of this thread?

What is the point of a useless post like that which contributes nothing to the thread?
