My biggest problem with the people asking what the "it" thing will be is; What do you want? Aside from things like improved camera, and video and the sorts. The only things I want are enhanced things such as a 64 GB and CPU. The rest of the things are software side. I really can't even think of what more can possibly be put into a phone. I mean adding a magenetometer makes me thinks Apple is trying to be innovative and doesn't have an idea of what to do. Even with a phone like the Pre the biggest claim is that the UI is crisper, and other software related things. Since this is about the Hardware I must ask what do you want hardware wise? I know things like Video and 64+GB I mean things that would blow you away and make you say wow. Not cosmetic either. (Although I guess depending on what it is it could be cosmetic)

I was blown away when I first saw the iPhone demonstrated. It's easy to forget how ahead of its time the iPhone was when it was first introduced. There really wasn't anything else like it out there.

I had never seen anything like it either. Of course, that is not saying much as I've only owned one previous phone - a freebie RAZR. The capacitive touch screen and seeing the web browser display full websites was just amazing.

I remember that in the keynote they kept saying this iPhone OS they developed was 5 years ahead of it's time...

Two years later, and they still think they are 3 years ahead. They're not.

Perfectly happy with what I have

I am perfectly happy with my 3G. The only thing that I wish was better was AT&T reception. I know people that are very happy with their first generations Iphones. I think these who skipped a year on 3G might upgrade.

I don't think anyone will be blown away by the announcement for simple reason that I have not heard any announcements about new breakthroughs in technology within the last year.

So the changes would probably be evolutionary.

I am 100% sure they will increase Megapixels on a camera. Because its easy. I guess some people that actually use their cellphones to take photos (I use my DSRS and point-and-shoot cameras for that purpose) might care, even though higher MPs don't mean better picture, but who in their right mind expects serious picture from a tiny lens and fixed focus.

They might or might not include video. Again for me who cares, but some people might care, I guess. Same with front-facing camera for videochat.

They will no doubt increase capacity toward 32GB and above. Again I don't care, I can't fill my 8GB Iphone.

They will claim that they yet again worked on battery and battery life is better. I have chargers in my house, my car, and at work. Nice feature, but not a major selling point for me.

Compass- ok.

What would be exciting if they increase the screen size so internet pages and photographs and videos look larger. Now that would be something. If they could increase the sceen size to lets say 4 inches or even more. Of course the iphone would be larger, so it ain't gonna happen.

I'll be getting one when my contract runs out in January (18 month in UK). I won't bother ending my contract early though. It would be nice if I could get a great deal come January unless O2 are still not budging on price for the iPhone.

I really don't get why people want video calling. It's the worst feature ever. For me, the autofocus camera would be a selling point.

Faster 3G? Excuse me while I laugh myself into death. I get nowhere near the current 3G revision's advertised top speeds on AT&T's trashy network most of the day. Maybe at like 2AM it runs nice, but when I need to use my phone which is usually inside of a building during the day I'm lucky if I get edge speeds. Heck, I'm lucky to even see a 3G signal inside most buildings.

I know that experiences with carriers differ vastly depending on region, user experience and expectations, specific location and so on but listening to complaints of my friends who have iPhones and reading blogs/forum posts leads me to believe overall AT&T is terrible. Their customer service is OK, but I rarely need to deal with customer care anyway so I don't care too much about that.

It's a phone.

If you are in a position to do a video call, it is possible to do it through another, established means such as iChat or Skype.

'Established video call' on a phone is UMTS video call, not those programs.

Okay, but if you're in a position to make a video call from a phone, you'll have something else available to you.

You miss the whole point. You make video calls only with your phone and 3G to ANY video call capable 3G phone.

Would this be a selling point for anybody?

No, that's exactly the point. How the heck do you know if the person you're calling is in a position to get the video call?

It isn't an iPhone. It has a physical keyboard.

I believe that is a slide out virtual keyboard. Just basing it on the fact that it has all the features of the current keyboard.

How do you know when you make a phone call that the other person will be able to answer?

Exactly!

You just make a normal phone call and save the video for a computer videoconference.

Seriously.

Honestly, you're on the bus, you're on the subway, you're driving, you're walking, you're at a diner...

Virtually EVERYWHERE, you are NOT in a position to hold your phone straight out, two feet away from your face, to talk to someone. You make yourself a target for thieves and rarely have that amount of room on a commute, nor is it physically possible within standard safety parameters most of the time (e.g., driving!).

You're not going to do it while walking down the street or at a restaurant. You'll do it sitting down at a desk or on a sofa at home, and you can just use your freaking computer in any of the usable situations.

It's a gimmick. Are there even any other phones that have video calls?

I think I remember a European member stating that Video Calling was quite prominent in Europe. I could be mistaken on the feature though

32 GB is a selling point for me. I want to finally ditch my iPod and 16GB just don't cut it.

Better camera, auto focus (maybe?) and video recording..I also think that's not coming to the 3G. But who knows. People will be pissed if it doesn't and other will buy new phones.

And I really hope for a new improved casing!

And faster processor and more RAM can't be bad too. It should make things snappier.

And who knows, they might improve the sound quality also.

I would consider upgrading if all it had was a notifier LED (on the front, not that retarded glowing Apple rumour)
