Well, if we're talking hardware...

Add coverage of every cellphone frequency and mode--GSM/UMTS and CDMA/EVDO at a minimum.

Agree with NFC abilities for payment.

IR transceiver to make it a learning universal remote with the right app.

Steve Jobs made fun of other smartphones for being too big and bulky. It's clear he doesn't like bigger screens on a smartphone. So get used to it or buy a different phone, they're not going to change the screen size.

+1

And I think that one of the main reasons that the iPhone has its current screen size it because it allows (most) users to navigate the phone and all of the screen while holding it with one hand.

IMO of course. Just a thought I had :)

When you think about it, half an inch is NOT that big of a difference. 3.5 to 4.0, IMO, would be perfect.

I would like to see a more... hand friendly design. (4 has edges, whereas the 2G, 3G, and 3GS are super comfortable to hold)

Camera upgrades pretty much always happen.

Those are basically the only ones I can think of...

+1 for all the posts on here that want a bigger screen.

It is fine the way it is. Want a bigger screen, buy an iPad.

The ability to customize SMS notification tones.
Bigger screen.
Widgets.
Ability to put info on the lockscreen
4G

iPhone 5

-High Water Resistance. The fact that we have $700- mobile phones that die at the sight of water is pretty silly. Its much like computers crashing. No need for it. Get rid of the 30 pin dock connector. Its 10 years old. Replace it with an optical solution that transfers data via light rather than electricity. Charge through induction. Replace speakers and mic with water resistant methods. 3.5mm jack will take some creativity. Then again, they're the ones with the 8 figure R&D Budget. I'm sure it can be done. Water resistance up to 3 meters should solve (at least) 97% of all water related issues.

-Near Field Communication (Credit Card Integration etc etc)

-Team with Automakers to bring iPhone integration to mass market. Not sure why better integration options aren't out there. Thats real lame. BMW juuuust got real iPod integration. WTF?! 2001 tech arriving in 2010. What kind of world is that?

-GPS enabled localized wifi apps (example: Walk into Target, get a map of Target on your phone to help you shop. Type in things to find them on the map.. toothpaste, shoes, tennis balls etc. Visit a Restaurant and have a look at the menu before going in. Go to a Museum and have a guided tour enabled via audio on iPhone and GPS location.

-Integrate the LED flash into Apple Logo on the back. That'd be slick.

There's a lot of software stuff that still needs to be taken care of or brought up to date...

-Revamp Clock app so that when you wake up you're read the daily news, weather, schedule ... etc to help you better prepare for the day. (Isn't that a no brainer?... there's gotta be an app for that.)

-iPhoto app for iOS 5.

-The Default weather app needs to display the temperature outside on the icon tile its self, much the same way that iCal shows the date. Isn't that a given?! Seriously Scott... this isn't your Twitter Account... you can't fall asleep on us here.

-Ability to delete (or hide) crap Apps like Stocks, Weather... etc.

-Customize lock screen with alerts of your liking (mail, FB, etc etc)

-iPod app needs to fade music when manually switching songs (like the way it fades when a call comes in) The whole jerkiness of the situation isn't very graceful to say that least.

More Color options although with their problems producing the White phones, not sure this will happen.

Hey let us customize the icons, and system sounds, SMS, MMS, Chimes, Tones etc for Calendar and everything - they can even sell in the iTunes store and ppl will buy em'

Ability to disable any apps that you do not use, kind of like the Nike+ and YouTube, but let the user decide.

Longer Life Battery & some type of Battery manager.

Dump the Glass on the Back, it seems to only be causing issues and it is not very strong, also it makes the unit seem heavy.

Ability to turn off Multi-Tasking, I personally do not use it, but I know there are others that do, so put some ability to turn it on or off pls.

For those looking for more space, give em' the option for 64GB or 128GB but Please do not get rid of the 32GB model, I do not want anymore space then that.

There is my $.02 Cents to the whole topic

How about

.....a small solar panel under the main screen thus giving the IP5 the battery life it deserves. I am certainly looking forward to see what is offered then I might make my way back to the Iphone fold. ;)

+2 I like the smaller screen when I want a bigger one, I use my iPad and if I need to be mobile, I use my MacBook, if I need to do anything with a larger screen I use my Mini with a 22" screen.

Let's not make these things lug-able keep em' simple.

1. Better audio chip/codec (take a leaf out of Cowon's book with their BBE technology).
2. Stereo speakers
3. Aluminium and plastic (3g part) back
4. 64gb storage

if we're talking about the ip5 as a physical phone, rather than iOS features, what we'll probably see is -

MINOR (if any) speed bump
Better rear camera of course
Antenna issue fixed
Possibly better battery life (although I must have a one-in-a-million phone, I barely need to charge this thing ever)
Improved forward-facing camera (God I hope so)
And I'm pretty sure by then, a new carrier. Unless AT&T REALLY gets its s'hit together.

EDIT: hopefully 64GB as well. 32GB has been the max for 2 gens now, that means it's probably time for an upgrade

iPhone 5

-Near Field Communication (Credit Card Integration etc etc)
.

Oh I forgot about this one, I would love to have an RFid on my phone, I would never put my credit card on it; but would love to use it for my Car (keyless ing), my computer (auto-login when I am around), Door Access and any membership card (Bookstore, Gym, Groceries Store, etc).

:)

I like the screen as is. Any phone I've saw with a bigger screen looks gaudy, tacky, and cheap. All anti-Apple.

Having the calendar on the lock screen would be neat.

Maybe some more SMS sounds/Ringtones (Refuse to have a song be a ringtone)

Ability to send more than 1 video at a time via email (or vids +pics)

Upload HD video from the phone itself.

Again, I can't stress enough how much I prefer the 3.5 screen over any of these behemoth clunkers available.

Blonde Buddhist

I want a slightly bigger screen, but I doubt it'll happen, a higher resolution front facing camera, and a more efficient antenna design (which will be difficult due to the iPhones small form factor). It will be better inside the phone but there's just not enough room.

LOL for a moment I thought you wanted a "blonde Buddhist" as part of the new features of the iPhone 5 :D:D:D.

((then I realized that you sign your post with your nickname))

- Widgets on home screen

- The ability to place apps where ever you want on the home screen.

- Antenna

- 4 inch screen. It really makes a difference.

Yeah. I think it'll be similar to the iPhone 4, but with 1080P video recording, 1.3MP front camera (vs VGA now), better battery life, 5GHz 802.11n, and maybe Bluetooth 3.0. Oh, and probably the A5 that's probably going in the next iPad.

Holding out for an antenna fix to iphone 4 but if they don't that would be my only concern. Otherwise the hardware is pretty much perfect for me.

For the software side i have more demands/wishes coming from android:

- better messaging system similar to android
- widgets for the home screen
- adjustable position for the apps on the home screen
- redesigning the dock, i actually really like the dock BLUR uses. It annnoys me the dock is basically the same as the home screen.

So yeah i'm not a fan of the iOS GUI. The music, camera, browser and mail apps are better than those on my android 1.6 though. But the phone itself is...just perfect save the antenna. Like i always imagined the ultimate phone of the future would be.

32 and 64gb storage
better cameras
iChat
better lockscreen (like the jailbreak apps)
tlert like system for replying to texts without closing current app
faster CPU
more RAM
release white at launch!
bigger screen
an actual screen rotation lock button (physical one)
ability to add even more apps to each folder
ability to customize icons

For hardware I would like a dual antenna design making the iPhone one of the best phones available.

For software:

- More information on homescreen (widgets)
- Weather icon display current temperature/condition
- Better notification system (include emails)
- More customizable sounds
- More customization in general
