Thinner, lighter. Don't know if to expect plastic or aluminum casing. I've heard reliable rumours of a tapered black plastic design, but aluminum also seems likely. As long as the case is stronger than the current one, that's good.

Minimum HDD at 160GB, top out at 300GB.

RAM 2GB standard, top out at 4GB.

Still integrated graphics (unfortunately), but better.

Black keyboard.

Superdrive standard.

This is what I actually expect, whereas most of the posts in this thread are wishful thinking. ;)

I think what you have as far as specs go is right on, although 9to5 Mac thinks that the will be nVidia graphics. I need dedicated graphics because I'm gonna buy games like CoD4 and they all require that now. And how you were talking about the Macbooks having black plastic- it would be great if the outside of the shell was the glossy black plastic on the back of the new iPhone. I bet that doesnt scratch easily either!

:apple: would be my hero if the MB matched the iPhones stealthy look!

Best to expect something along the lines of:

  • a Aluminium and matte black casing, slimmer due to a tapered edge.
  • A 14" screen, closer to the edges of the bezel - (To distinguish the MacBook Air as the 'travellers best friend' - If you remember, the iBook was available in 12" and 14" options, then made just to 13" MacBook before the Air.)
  • Possibly a price drop, not dramatically, But just enough to penetrate competitor notebooks. From £699 base to 600/649? Closer to the EEE PC's.
  • Glossy screen, no matte option on MacBooks, possibly option on MacBook Pro's (Professional.)
  • Black backlit keyboard, to follow suit from the MacBook Air - Keeps continuity going for Apple notebooks.
  • Solid State HDD - in possibly both MB's & MBP's. (From the Brick riddle - brick being no moving parts, same as the solid state.)
  • Power options starting from 2.2GHz as standard.
  • Full Multitouch trackpad, possibly glass, but unlikely - (Design cues come from the iMac and MacBook Air.)
  • 2GB RAM as standard.
  • Maybe Blu Ray support for MacBook Pro's (Optional extras.) - not MacBooks.
  • LED backlit screens - Brighter.
  • Lighter shells - Bridging the gap between MBA & MBP - the middle lightweight.

- From what's been rumoured, I think October 14th sounds about right. Mac usually gives 2 years before they update their products, with minor speed bumps in between. Though it's still not certain - Some are saying tablet macs, docking stations, wireless charging, eBook things etc. Curious to why such a big update hasn't had much OFFICIAL hype from Apple - Banners, teasers etc? Does anyone know of any concrete proof? Pictures etc?

:) Myke.

EDIT: Just to add, It might be worthwhile to keep n eye on October 7th, a week before, might be teasers then. Apple's idea of not trying to give to much away. Also, from what I remember, Apple released the MacBook's entirely at random last time in 2006. Maybe the same goes?

OMG!

I think a lot of it is seriously wishful thinking - you have to bear in mind that Apple want to keep the Pro in their range, they need people buying it for their profit margins. So, increasing the screen size, upping to dedicated graphics and all that? I don't think it'll happen..

What they could do, though, is make a model equivalent of the Pro and get rid of the Pro range for a top end 15/17" model with dedicated graphics and have the same type of casing for them all.. if only!

Battery life- 24 hours

I'll have some of whatever it is you've taken...

I expect the new MacBook to have a 2.5ghz quad-core, a Quadro M, 16 GB of RAM, a solid gold case, one week of battery life, and cost $1.

If Apple does not do this I will not buy another Apple product ever again.

Same here!

All the stuff our delusional (just kidding) friend has mentioned sound near right for the MacBook Pro. The MBP wont if anything get Blu-Ray until Snow Leopard next June. The whole MB family will probably get DDR3 RAM and any SSD with over 150GB storage is out of the question for a year or so. I personally would like to see a 200GB aftermarket SSD to put in the MB I'm buying for 100, 150 bucks. The MBA will have a 120GB with the update hence the new iPod Classic's storage.

On another note I would love a MB with a backlit keyboard! Whos with me? What do you think the MB will adapt from its big brothers? I am for the MBA keyboard and the pop-open USB ports (only with 4 ports).

Lets pray for nVidia and 2.4 and 2.6 Genius Centrino 2's!;):D

Hahahahahahahahahaha

Whatever your taking is a heckuva lot better than the other guy, lol:p

Quad-Core is possible in the MBP from now until next year.
A lot of people talk about very long battery life. What kind of battery (non-nuclear, lol) can achieve this???
Solid gold, huh? Make mine platinum!!!;)
Quadro M: I just crapped myself laughing: why get that when you can just use a hologram projector?!:D
16GB? Why not 16 trillion bytes, cmon! this is the 23rd century, lol:cool:

^Just my senseless ramblings, lol:p

Unless you were being sarcastic and I just missed it, please check what Solid State Drive and Hard Disk Drive are. And while we're at it, since when does Apple know what teasers are? ;)

I also think it's likely MB will get MBA's keyboard, if only because of parts standardizing Apple seems to be increasing. Although I wouldn't call Air a *big* brother of a MacBook... perhaps a rather slim 'big sister' ;). And it isn't possible to have both NVIDIA chipsets and Centrino 2 (aka Montevina), so I assume you mean dedicated graphics card like in MBP? I don't think prayers will help with that.

All this speculation and I find myself imagining those MacBooks already even though I won't be getting one :D.

Sorry I meant Montevina chipset and nVidia ded. graphics!

Well, the secret of the brick is over!:D

OK, so the confirmation of aluminum and knowing that the new MB will be stronger and look better is great but I just wet myself a little at the fear that the Macbook will be like the MBA now and to change the battery I will have to go to the Apple Store! I really hope this isn't true!!!

hello all! i had a question about time capsule: my mom bought a base imac this weekend:D and i was wondering if when we bought my new macbook if i would be able to share a time capsule between the computers and if i could access files on her computer with the time capsule. if i can do this, do you think i should ask her to get the 500 or 1000 time capsule? she is on a budget and i was wondering if 500 would work. she has a 250 hdd and im getting 250 for my macbook. would this be enough?

as far as i know 250+250 adds up to 500... and this is if you decide to max out your hard drives.... which i doubt you'll do... i have 4 pc's and two macs and a 500 GB external drive... i've used about half of it now... mostly to back up the operating systems.... my personal files are about 2 GB... so 500 GB is plenty!

Biggest Wish

Lots of interesting speculation and fantasizing, good fun. Personally, I could do without Blu-Ray or solid gold case (heavy!), but LED display and a video card upgrade would be sweet.

Biggest wish? That the Oct. 14 release-date rumor comes true! 12 hours before business day starts on the west coast...waiting for that wonderful announcement!;)

What I'd like to see in the new MacBook are:
  • LED display
  • backlit keyboard
  • multi-touch trackpad

That's it. These are the only reasons why I didn't get the current MacBook. I'm not asking for too much am I? :)

I just want a return of the 12" powerbook :(

My MBP is just not the same and is way too big to carry around.

Other wishes:
LED backlit screen
graphics card that is at least equivalent to an 8600m GT.
