I also prefer no soap, no creams, lotions, etc.

I get the best shave with a sharp blade and water.
I'm going to give it a go. I'm in the habit of using cream or soap. I've always used water and a sharp blade to start the process, like near sideburns or a beard. Silly of me not to have tried it consistently for a complete shave.

Thread revival...

I've got an approx seven year old Phillips Norelco 8240XL electric shaver that I want to put new blades in, but the blades are $35-40 and I can buy a new razor for about $80, as I recall, about what I paid for this razer. Any opinions, replacement blades or new Razer and keep n mind the battery could poop out at any time. If a new Razer, I do keep the disposable Schick blades and a can of lather around for emergencies, but would like opinions on the best electric razer for the money and to keep the price below $100. My inclination is another Noreco Razer, for about the same price. Thoughts? Thanks!

I used Norelco for years and switched to Braun, much happier with it. It's foil rather than rotary, which does a better job for my facial hair.

Schick electric in HS. Gillette blades in the Army, since couldn't count on electricity overseas esp in Vietnam. Norelco Rotary for a long time and Gillette Trac III since then.

Guy I ran into on my commute to NYC suggested drying the disposable blades off after each shave. They last quite awhile doing that (3-4 weeks but my beard isn't that tough). Odd conversation to have with someone I admit!

Double edge safety razor and usually soap while in the shower. I usually take all of my shower and then shave last. I have found that it gives my face the most time to get soft and ready for the shave. I use to use cartridge razors but the safety razor is a much better shave.

Soap, oil, ??? or nothing?
Just warm water thats it.

Same here, Casey Neistat (youtube sensation) once brought it up in a vlog, ever since then I just use warm water. Plus its easier to maneuver around when shaping up the beard.

Yea I was doing the same thing around the beard, and then I saw someone say they do their whole face so I tried it. Ever since then I do not use anything besides the warm water. Let us know how you like it.

I will finish them off, but these blades have been very disappointing.

After one or two shaves, they are pretty much toast. Lots of skin and hair pulling which I didn't have with my Feather blades.

I bought a pack of Personnas once, I didn't like them either. I put them in my Dopp kit to use for traveling, and I couldn't even stand them that infrequently - I got rid of them. I bought a box of Astras from Amazon (link below) and I've been using them for a couple of years now. They're the closest I've found to a close and comfortable shave to Feathers but at less than half the price. Seems like I'll get another 2-3 years out of what I have left, and all for under ten bucks at the time.

I use the Fusion Proglide as I really don't have the patience or the skill for either a straight blade or a double sided safety razor. I usually use Fusion Proglide Gel as dry shaving makes my blades dull quicker.

I had heard that blow drying blades after use is best, but I just shake it out and pat the blades dry with a towel.

I thought the same thing and while there is a little bit of a learning curve to the double edge safety razor it really does not take that long to get use to. It probably took me 3-4 shaves to get comfortable enough with it.

I will. Years ago I was in an environment with scarce access to water; soap more so. I got by then just fine. I'll find out if my current creme/soap habit started for a reason. Thanks (or curses :-D) go to you guys for the idea.

To dry mine (cartridges), I dip them into a small container of isopropyl alchohol, then shake it off. I keep a covered one ready for this purpose; lasts a long time.

Thank you for the link and recommendation! Just added them to my list and will give them a try on my next purchase!

I was actually amazed at how quick I picked it up. I have not gone back to a regular razor with multiple blades since.

For anyone with sensitive skin I'd highly recommend the Philips one blade.

I picked one up a few weeks back and it's very very good.

Just ordered some more tubes of Musgo Real shaving cream. I've used about 3 or 4 different brands and this one I like the best.

Interesting, I've never tried it. I'm a Taylor of Old Bond Street fan. How do they compare?

I've heard Taylor is good stuff, I've not tried it yet. But out of Proraso and a few others, Musgo gives me the best lather and it smells great and it's a very smooth and rich shave. I shave my head too so it's great on my mellon.

I may give it a try. I just finished off a tub of TOBS and started using DR Harris, it smells great but the lather doesn't measure up to TOBS.

I don't know if I mentioned this yet, but I recently switched to Defender Razor. It's a mail order thing like Harry's, but the blades are fantastic and don't clog. I can go 5 days or so and the blades just glide over my skin. I highly recommend them.

It's been a success. Next, I have to think about whether my blade habits are wasteful.

Thank you, to you and others, for the nudge.
