Also, do any of you use Harry's? How is it?

https://www.harrys.com/products

I've always been using el-cheapo shaving products, and that needs to change now.

I've been using Harry's for a while. I've always used a premium something but bought Harry's when pricing of the premiums pissed me off.
Just for kicks last week I used my old razor. What a terrible shave next to the Harry's setup.
Try a Harry's razor and you will love it. The blades last quite a while too.
Their marketing is the only down side. If you order anything it sets up an automatic purchase plan. I had to contact them to get off of it because I didn't need blades stacking up before I needed them.
It is a great shave and I've got a tough beard.

An animal fur brush with porcelain grip and shaving soap.
I was at one point thinking about getting a shaving knife, but the two blade throwaways are more convenient.

I did the same for years and years. I finally got tired of the hair coming out of the brushes. I bought many from very expensive to even more expensive, still after several months of use the hair would start to come out.
I gave up and now use the cheapest cream I can find.
That coupled with a Harry's blade is primo.

About a year ago I started using a Merkur 38C safety razor along with a badger brush and Taylor Of Old Bond Street shaving cream. For me it works much better than multi blade razors and cheap shaving cream.

I've had mine for 15 years now and I don't recall losing a single hair.

I was not that lucky. I took up the practice from my dad, but his brushes lost hairs as well. I'd still be using the brush as it soaked my heavy beard well, but I never found the tight one. Mine were mostly badger hair as well. Maybe I'll try again.

Try boar hair.

I use a Merkur 34C heavy duty double edge shaver with aster or derby blades, van der hagen shaving soap, and a bit of either bigelow (proraso) or maca root shaving cream. I do three passes: with the grain (direction of hair growth), across the grain, and against the grain. I follow that with a buffing of remaining stubble using repeated short strokes. Follow that with cold water rinse, a rub down with an alum block (kind of like a septic pencil), a rinse of witch hazel, and then a face skin cream. Baby butt smooth shave every time. It is very relaxing and a bit fun, actually.

Lately, I have been skipping blade shaving altogether and use electric clippers a leave a little stubble behind because my wife likes it. Will go back soon, since I enjoy wet shaving.

I usually just touch myself up every morning with a rechargeable Norelco. I do keep a Gillette and some shaving cream around for those times I let it grow for a few days and need to actually use a blade.

What blades are you guys using with your safety razors? I've tried Shark, Derby, Astra, and Feather. Out of those I like Feather the best.

Of those, Feather is also my favorite, but they're WAY expensive. Astra is a close second, and I was able to pick up 100 of those on Amazon for $8 and change.

I like Astra's as well, but not as much as the Feather's. You're right though, Feather's are more than twice the price, but I feel it's worth it.

I have both in stock

Really guys, try the Harry's offering. It's the best feeling shave I've ever had. Never nicks my skin and shaves close at a great price.
Really !!
Isn't this thread about Harry's ? ;)

Ron, I tried Harry's. To be honest, it wasn't for me. From my experience, the blades clogged easily after a couple of strokes where as my safety razor can do several strokes before it needed to be rinsed. Maybe it's just me? BTW, my housemate loves his. Go figure...

Cool, I'm going to give Harry's a shot then. It can't possibly be worse than my current shaving setup.

To me, the design allows the shaving cream to pass out the top over the blade causing less clog than a twin blade. But your experience is different and I respect that.
We are all wired differently. Huh #

I use a heavy safety razor most of the time and Harry's when I travel or when I need a quick shave.

Gillette Foamy Barber Shop Scent with Mach 3

I use Gillette Foamy Barber Shop Scent with Mach 3. The shaving cream is only available on Amazon, and who knows for how long?

I used to use Colgate Shaving Cream (regular), but then Colgate stopped making it. My wife does not like the Marbasol scent. Noxema USED to have a nice shaving cream, but then the license was sold to somone who cheapened the formula.

On special occasions, like job interviews, I pull out my stash of 1985 Gillette MicroTracs left over from a McDonalds promotion (nine remaining). The MicroTrac is long gone, but it was (for me) Gillette's best disposable by FAR. The extra thin head (NO lubrastrip for me, thanks) is the only thing that actually can shave under my nose properly. No pivot, no lubrastrip, only two blades, and it was the best ever. (Mine is the original light brown version).

I respect your opinion as well :) Different strokes for different folks.. (Sly and the Family Stone)

In my humble opinion, my big issue with the classic safety razor is that you have to shave really slowly to get a decent, clean shave. And that's on top of whisking up the shaving foam by hand using a good shaving soap. No thank you. If I want a really decent shave like this, I'd rather get it from a professional barber. :)

That's why I shave with a Schick Xtreme 3 shaver and a good shaving gel instead--I can get a very close, clean shave done very quickly.

I have been using Wilkinson and Headblade for many years.

With practice, getting a good, nick-free, shave with a double edge safety razor can be done quickly and without mess. It takes me less than 5 minutes to do a 2-pass shave (with the grain and then against the grain) using shaving cream and brush in bowl. Using shaving gel out of a can, it can be done even faster. Of course, getting a pro shave with a straight razor is a treat when you have time and don't mind spending $20 and up. To me, shaving is a pleasure and relaxing, so I like to do it myself using the right tools and products that are not needlessly expensive.
