I'm getting a car soon...and my parents want me to get a good name but used.
There are many other costs associated with owning a car besides the initial investment.

Insurance, maintenance, taxes, fuel costs, etc. are all considerations.

Get a good used car that has decent mileage and a great maintenance record.

Check out the major companies for models.

Don't worry about the cool factor. Get something smart.

Look no further. Now go.
For some reason I see him driving a pink AMC Pacer with purple crushed velvet seats.

How likely is that to happen?

Especially if the parent drops a BMW in the lap.

Probably won't happen until the 3 wife takes him for everything in the divorce, and he has to go out and buy a used Hyundai Accent hatchback or Geo Metro.

LOL. Probably true!

Who knows, maybe my comments may make a difference...

With gas prices now, you should get a vehicle that gets better than 12mpg

Exactly, do they sell the Toyota Yaris or Honda Jazz (both do more than 40mpg) in the US?

Incedibly reliable + great MPG = a great first car :)

I'll put in another vote for the 3 series. A beautiful car with a great safety record.

For the A4, the older model with a small engine is underpowered, and the bigger engine will probably place you in a higher insurance bracket (it gets classified as a performance sedan).

Don't even think about the x5. Why would your family need 3 SUV's that eat gas? They are purely for image (which I admit is important otherwise you would be buying an old Ford Escort). An SUV is not safer than a 3 or A4 and as a previous poster noted you're more likely to kill someone else.

If you are worried about reliability then don't get a new VW.

Oh, and for what it's worth, jakochampolska is a girl, I think. :)

call me stupid, but which cars gets better than 12mpg out of that list?

with the 3 series you should get 22-27mpg highway, and around 15-18 city. Depends if it is Steptronic (Auto) or Manual. I average 24 Highway and 18 City in my 2006 3 Series.

I would go for the 03 3 series, they are solid cars with a proven reliability record. Maintenance is a bit more than with a Japanese car but well i suppose if you wanted a tin can on wheels you would had a japanese car in your list :)

Good Luck

I've heard "Beamer" used in the UK to describe a BMW car on various occasions. I'm not saying it's right, but people use it.

I hear it all the time, too. But in that first link it explains all of it. beamer is wrong.

How can you afford that!!! My first car is a 1.2 Vauxhall Corsa for £2.500. Out of your 3, i would go for the A4. I love the look of them and they are really good cars.

Well I wouldn't say thats entirely true, my grandma's DeVille handles about as well as our jeep. ;)

For the most part SUVs handle worse than small cars, especially in braking maneuvers because of their high-center of gravity and weight. However, a Deville is a really heavy car with a very soft steering system causing similar effects.

SUVs have gotten better and vehicles like the Jeep Grand Cherokee are safer than they used to be, but this requires a knowledgable driver who understands the limits of their vehicle. Most people killed in SUV accidents sustain head-injuries in roll-overs. And, this doesn't refer to the high mass of SUVs with taller bumpers which can cause injury to people in smaller cars.

The original SUVs were never designed with typical commuting in mind.

They just started with the Yaris, both 2-door hatch & 4-door sedan.

The the Honda Fit (Jazz in other countries) is also new here this year, as a 4-door hatch.

Yes it does.

It has come up time and again in the BMW CCA Roundel and all over the planet. We gotta keep covering this issue till the world gets straightened out.

It's a simple, painless lesson. Learn now and avoid embarrassing yourself in front of other car enthusiasts.

It its history, BMW has made cars, motorcycles, and aircraft engines. There is no confusion surrounding the aircraft engines, so lets move on to the cars.

This is a BIMMER. I don't have to tell you that this 2004 M Coupe features FOUR wheels.

Bimmer
BMW cars are called Bimmers. Say BIM-mer. If you are a New England native or want to sound like one, say BIM-mah.

BMW cars. Bimmers.

Bimmer is also is the official name of the Newsletter of the Boston Chapter. It has been published continuously since 1970. From sometime in the 1990s to March 2000 the newsletter was called BIMMER (all uppercase). Justin Hughes, the current Editor in Chief changed the name back to Bimmer. Then Suzin Koehler became the Editor and changed the name to Boston Bimmer.

Bimmer Magazine is based in California and has nothing to do with the Boston Chapter, even though it is a very nice magazine.

But wait, here's the important part.

2004-r1100s-grey-metallic-250.jpg

This is a BEEMER. BMW Motorcycles have two wheels. BEEMER = 2 WHEELS.

Beemer or Beamer
BMW motorcycles are called one thing but it is spelled two ways. Beemers or Beamers, you just say BEAM-er. Or maybe BEAM-uh.

This is very simple. Motorcycles have two wheels. Beemers have two wheels.

The term "bimmer" was later coined to refer (exclusively) to BMW automobiles. As such, use of the word "beemer" to refer to a BMW automobile is frowned upon by BMW enthusiasts, because it is the term used for motorcycles. Although the distinction is somewhat arbitrary, to this day, the media, movies, and most people still use the term "beemer" to refer to the automobiles due to their ignorance of this fact.

If you want reliability Toyota is the only way to go. I don't own one, I have an almost new Explorer, but that is because it snows here and I live on rural roads. I also have a small trailer to pull with my toys (ATV and snowmobile).

It depends on how much you want to spend on maintenance. One thing that American or Japanese cars have on European vehicles is that if they do break they can be a lot cheaper to fix.

I have never heard of Toyota having any problems. Heck I don't even think they have ever had a recall like the Europeans and Americans always seem to have. It seems that people can buy a Toyota and abuse it...forget maintenance...oil changes...etc. and it will keep running just fine.

If you have the money to maintain a European car...that is great, but in the end your best bet for a car is Japanese and for a truck or SUV is Japanese or American. That is my opinion anyhow.

You do realise that Toyota... only last year, recalled over 2 million vehicles.

Huh...well I never really see it reported on the news. I have a Ford which has been good, but all my friends say get a Toyota because they will never break down even if you abuse them. So I just assumed since I have never really seen any quality issues about them on the news they have never had an issue. I guess you can't assume anything. I'll have to research that a little bit I guess.
