What do you think the next-gen iPhone will be named?

It would be INSANE if they called the iPhone 6 the iPhone 5 LOL.

Calling it iPhone 6 seems way too sensible for them, after just calling the iPad 3 the "iPad" (or "new iPad")...so yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if they call it "the new iPhone", which would at least drive me less nuts than if they call it the iPhone 5, at which point why not call it the iPhone 3, or the iPhone 2, or the iPhone 99?

I concur, you are an example of why I 'would' want it to be called the iPhone 5 !

:p

"The new iPhone" I would be completely shocked if it was anything else.
Why would it be called "The new iPhone"? The third generation iPad isn't called "The new iPad" either.

I think they'll settle with simply "iPhone" (like they are doing with the third-generation iPad which is simply called "iPad"). I wouldn't be surprised, however, if it was going to be "iPhone (something-here)" - I think that they changed the naming scheme for the iPad, because they are planning to launch the iPad mini (and else you'll get, in 2012: iPad 3 and iPad mini - in 2013: iPad 4 and iPad 2 mini" - in 2014: iPad 5 and iPad 3 mini - etc.).

iPhone LTE

Considering that the 3G was named to indicate the network it could access, it wouldn't surprise me if they named it the iPhone LTE to make sure people know it has 4G LTE capability.

If they opt not to go that route, my guess is just new iPhone.

Not a chance. Too many syllables in iPhone LTE.

Not as many as in iPhone HSPA+. And no more than iPhone 3GS.

The other complicating factor is defining "generations." iPhone 3G to 3GS isn't really a generation...it's an upgrade of the same phone. Same thing with 4 to 4S. Depending on how you look at it, the 4s can be the 3rd generation phone (this is how I see it), or the 5th.

To avoid any confusion, I see Apple ditching the numbers. That brings me back to either LTE or just new iPhone.

new iPhone

as said above, you've missed out the most likely candidate "the new iPhone", which is why you're getting a lot of votes for "other"

Ipersonal lol

Because the phone function is not the key point of these products anymore

iPhone 6 would make the most sense. I could see "iPhone 4G" too, I guess.

Calling the iPad 3 the "new iPad" or "iPad" or whatever was completely inane. I'd fire anyone ridiculous enough to name your third gen product the same as the first gen one, when product names and distinctions are already beyond confusing for most people.

I mean I'd be shocked if there aren't people who think the iPad 2 is better than the "new iPad", since 2 is better than 1.

iPhone 4(something). But don't replace the "something". Leave it as is. There is a 99% chance the next iPhone will be called iPhone 4(something), literally. You heard it here first!

(by the way, voted for other)

In line with the new iPads and the Macs, the next-generation iPhone will be just referred to as the iPhone. Apple will advertise it as "the new iPhone". Later on, it will be referred to as the 2012 iPhone or the 6th-generation iPhone.

I think it will be called.....

I think they'll start just calling it "iPhone". Makes sense really, it's now the only product of theirs that have true version names. Thins like "retina MacBook Pro" and "The New iPad" aren't actually those products names, it's just how they're marketed

iPhone 3G - 3G support
iPhone 3GS - Speed
iPhone 4S - Siri

Apple won't do LTE or 4G. If you watch the iPhone 4S keynote, they mention other devices had 4G in their name but iPhone 4S has the same HSDPA as them and stuff.

Plus AT&T versions already say 4G (although it isn't actual 4G).

Just for kicks.

If you choose other, throw it in the comments.

I wish that there was a "I don't care what the name will be" option. I cannot choose "Other," because to me that implies that I think the name will be something other than the choices listed. I just don't get why some people are so concerned about the name of the next iPhone.

If it gets a number i will be iPhone 5, regardless of what generation it is. The buying public only knows that the iPhone 4/4s was the last one so for them 5 comes after 4.

They skipped iPhone 2, so there's certainly precedent. Would be incredibly confusing if they named the iPhone 6 the iPhone 5, so I don't think even Apple would do that...I hope!

Beyond just sticking to simple numbers, I think they need to start labeling their general "platforms" so that it's easier to tell what programs will run on what iOS devices. Like iPhone and iPod 1 and 2 could be platform 1 or A or whatever. 3 and 4 and iPad 1 could be B, 4 and iPad 2 and 3 could be C, etc.

No way it will be the iPhone 6 as it will just completely confuse the general public. Most people don't really keep up with how many actual generations of the phone there have been. My guess is they will go the way they did with the iPad and just call it the new iphone.

Confusing to who? You or the average consumer? I posted this in another thread and it's worth posting here.

Let's remove the generation numbers from your list (since the average consumer doesn't know this or care about this).

iPhone
iPhone 3G
iPhone 3GS
iPhone 4
iPhone 4S
iPhone ___

Now tell me what comes next, 5 or 6?
