Why would it be called "The new iPhone"? The third generation iPad isn't called "The new iPad" either.
I think they'll settle with simply "iPhone" (like they are doing with the third-generation iPad which is simply called "iPad"). I wouldn't be surprised, however, if it was going to be "iPhone (something-here)" - I think that they changed the naming scheme for the iPad, because they are planning to launch the iPad mini (and else you'll get, in 2012: iPad 3 and iPad mini - in 2013: iPad 4 and iPad 2 mini" - in 2014: iPad 5 and iPad 3 mini - etc.).
The third generation iPad isn't called "The new iPad" at all. It's called "iPad" (just like I point out in my point). The "new"-part is simply there because the product just launched, and thus it is new. "new" isn't in the name at all.Um when they market the iPhone they are going to call it the new iPhone, that is exactly what they did when the iPad came out.

Confusing to who? You or the average consumer? I posted this in another thread and it's worth posting here.
They will definitely use 'New iPhone'. Steve Jobs regretting version numbering the iOS devices and there's no doubt they are now phasing that out with New iPad. I think this is great news for consumers who don't want to be confused by geeky version numbers, they just want to buy iPhones.
Seeing that some have opted '4S something', i would like to know what exactly were they thinking? iPhone 4SII ???
iPhone pro, or the obvious iPhone 5, I certainly hope it is NOT 'the new iPhone'
Just 'iPhone'. Please, enough of the stupid names already.
It's clear that the iPhone and iPad will become like other Apple products and not go through major redesigns too often, becoming more familiar devices and differentiating with software.
Imagine we were calling the current iMac the iMac 12?
iPhone 5.
Where I come from, the next number after '4' is '5'.
The new iPhone or iPhone 4G, because of LTE.
Definitely not iPhone 5. That would make no sense.
