  • no more mandatory webkit requirement for non Safari iPadOS web browsers
  • more compatibility with non-Apple devices (USB-C, "AirDrop", "AirPlay", "iMessages" as examples)
  • better iPad external monitor support (less black bars, screen resolutions - not the stage manager thing) even for regular iPads of all sizes

There’s not much I want to see this year from Apple. Almost all of their product updates have been boring for years now, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon without someone more imaginative and/or bold at the helm or on the leadership team.

That said, personally, I would like an M2 Mac Mini with a smaller, fanless form factor. I’d also like to see the base RAM on their Macs increased. As the RAM is now on-die like the iOS devices have always been, that should free Apple to increase the RAM by arbitrary amounts, ie. 8GB to 10, 12, etc. instead of being forced to jump to 16GB base immediately.

Less iPhone models and more iPhone sizes in standard iPhone model (one Face ID iPhone model and one SE model). I’d do away with the stainless steel iPhone and “Pro” branding and iPhone numbering and I’d give the lighter weight aluminium iPhone a tri-camera system and four sizes: 5.0” mini, 5.6” regular iPhone, 6.2” Plus and 6.8” Max.

I’d make iPhone SE in two sizes, 4” and 5” with updated internals and squared sides. As these phones are budget and to make a clear distinction between SE and the other model I’d keep the home button design with Touch ID and I would keep the rear camera to a single camera lens. I’d give the phone the same updated chip as the premium iPhone to streamline software development across iPhones to a single processor. There are plenty of more important ways to differentiate the two distinct iPhone lines, which I have just listed. All games and processor tasks would perform the same across all iPhones.

And then give us a larger screened iMac with faster chips and larger RAM/SSD options, and a decent complement of ports including some 3.0 USB-A ports. Don’t need the screen to be 120 Hz nor do I need it to be blooming mini-LED. Cost as always is one of the most important features—too high and most of us will be priced out of the iMac line. For someone who’s been using iMacs for twenty years, I’d rather that didn’t happen.

Further, I’d transition iPhone and all Apple software platforms to a biennial two-year major release schedule. In theory this allows Apple to improve software quality x2—the most important factor when it comes to maturing software; everything else is secondary.

All Macs should move to a reliable yearly chip bump schedule. For some Macs that would be earlier in the year and for some that would be by summer or later. But the key is it would be predicable and consistent every year and would be verbalised thusly.

1) Removed the snap-to-grid silliness from iOS and allow users to place icons wherever they want.

2) Icon/UI theming (i.e. adjust colors based on the user's wallpaper like Android 13 does). Icon packs would be a great start.

3) iMessage somehow available on Android, or at least add RCS as the fallback for iMessage. Make all messaging more secure, regardless of what platform you're sending messages to/from.

4) Get rid of Lightning and add USB-C (hopefully we're moving in this direction soon). And not just for the iPhone. Make AirPods USB-C as well.

These are the things I'm looking to get if Apple will make in 2023:

1. AirPods Max 2nd Gen and large HomePod 2nd Gen
2. A better HomeKit ecosystem
3. A better iPadOS and more pro apps for the iPad
4. A solid Watch Ultra II to make it worth upgrading from a Watch 6
5. A redesigned iPhone 15 Ultra with thunderbolt port and periscope lens
6. A 32" iMac

1) upgraded Mac Pro with superb graphics capabilities like ray tracing and able to swap out graphics cards

2) Updated replacement for Pro XDR in 27 and 31 inch displays

3) 31 inch iMac M3 with consumer upgradeable components

4) macOS for newer iPad Pro’s

Apple does so many incredible things that need to be highlighted. Security and privacy are going to be big topics this decade and Apple is already the leader here.

I want to see a larger concerted effort talking about security, privacy and doing the right thing.

Needs to be more than a couple of adds and an executive exposé.
