I just hope 10.6 works well out of the box. It's no good if it fixes 10.5 while introducing a host of new problems that won't be resolved until 10.7.

You can do this already in Leopard.

Click on View and you should see something along the lines of Path Bar or Show Path.

Sorry I'm at work at the moment so can't get the exact steps.

Yes, you can see the path with this option enabled, but you can't just click on each step in the path to return to that point; you have to right click and then select an option.

The best thing about apple is its intuitive interface; this aspect however is poorly implemented and far from intuitive, IMHO. I really think it's the only thing Vista has going for it (again IMHO) and I think iTunes does it even better (see previous post).

Thanks! :)

When I first heard the phrase 'illuminous', I thought it would be far more interesting. Perhaps hard to describe, but I was picturing an environment where there was an actual light source cast upon the desktop. Meaning instead of straight flat shadows dropped directly behind a window, their appearance would be dependent on where the light source was coming from. Likewise, background windows wouldn't simply grey out, they would fall into shadow based on their relationship to the light source. I think it would add a certain depth the environment that doesn't currently exist.

Of course it wouldn't apply to the content of an active window, but to everything else. Is it eye candy? Sure. But Apple eye-candy has always been about useful eye-candy, which I think this would be.

that is what i thought too, got shot down/ mostly ignored of course, back before leopard was released. I also wanted some reflectiveness, and damn i'm so sorry i wished for that now. the implementation of that part of my dream ui was horrible.

A new UI consisting of a professional graphite look, with iTunes elements such as iTunes scroll bars and list headers. Eliminating all aqua elements - including the traffic lights.

Clickable and edible path thingy
Edit:
woops! I mean editable

More UI options (including less eye candy options :) --- I mean, like Tiger dock, less - or better, no - aqua or shininess)
-----
Smaller (Xslimmer-ed! :p) apps and OS
Remove PPC code
Remove unnecessary files, like designable.nib
Clean out bad, old, and unnecessary code
Use vector images - Resolution independence
Make monolingual default
Universal UI!
Full 64-bit

with this OS X 10.6, which is a lot more expensive then 10.5, will I have to go through the same BS as when I upgraded from tiger to leopard? Most programs stopped working I had to wait for updates and even some 3rd party software never did update so I lost the use of some all together.

Is it worth the hassle?? Do I need to or have to upgrade? From what I read, it designed to fix a lot of issues and bugs.. but why do we have to buy it? Why not an update, like every other time??

are you serious? No one has said how much it will cost or even how apple will be distributing the software.

Nor does anyone know how the update will effect the applications you already have. Go troll somewhere else.

i've got an itunes suggestion, you should be able to punch like F5 (or any other function key for that matter) and then a little dialog type thing just like what the brightness and volume monitor look like but only this you can type in a genre, artist, song, rating level, length, album, or simply type in random from any app! Not just when iTunes is in focus. For example i want to listen to some Beck but i'm too lazy to open up itunes, scroll up and down the list of songs or use the search function. So all i do is press F5 then type in "Be" and it should bring up a list of artists/songs/genres starting with Be. since i also have The Beatles, i'll have to type in "Bec" and then it should automatically play a random Beck song, then the next song should be something in the same genre or from the same artist. But enough about intelligent shuffle (good idea btw!)

Why not just use spotlight?

I want to congratulate Apple on integrating OpenCL into 10.6, the ability to use the graphics processor for other tasks is a great idea that I've wished for a couple years ago. As a non-gamer, my GPU is largely wasted in Leopard. However, along with this innovation, Apple needs to support SLI/CF configurations for graphics cards. Since you can use gpus in tandem in Bootcamp, I assume this is an OS/driver issue. It's especially important now that it's not just the gamers who benefit, but everyone using Photoshop and Final Cut.

Also, many of us use multiple monitors and I find the lack of the menu bar on the second screen very annoying. Please display the menu bar on multiple screens. In fact, why not allow Spaces to interact with multiple monitors so you could assign some of them to one monitor and the rest to the other instead of both monitors displaying the same Space?

And while I could go on and on, my personal Mac experience would probably be most helped by improving X Windows integration. One of the best things about OSX (for me) is that I can integrate Linux (X) and PC (Darwine/Fusion) programs onto the same desktop. That's actually why I bought a Mac, but I'm often disappointed by stability issues and the appearance of programs in X on a Mac.

I would like to make a comment about 3d desktops : )

A 3d desktop would be great (for me anyways). As I live in a 3d world. I often visualize path navigation and finding open applications in 3d even in my current 2d environment.

3d screens would not need to be needed, as a 3d environment can be simulated nicely on todays 2d screens.

* I would like to leave it up to the apple creative and development team to design how this would best work.

I would also like to point out that any speculation on how user friendly our useful of a 3d desktop would be can only be an OPINION. This is true because no 3d desktop has been made by apple. Comments about existing 3d desktops may hold some truth to them. So before anybody goes and bashes me on how useless or silly the idea of a 3d desktop is, please keep in mind that any "3d" desktop that you are thinking about is not the same one that I am thinking about so you can not make any factual statements about the 3d desktop I am suggesting.

cost of OS X 10.6

I'm not up on a lot of stuff but I do pay attention to my emails. About a week ago I received a message informing me of the appending release of 10.6 @ a cost of $129.00 US. I paid $80.00 in ...September I think it was. How is it that I got this notification and none of you guys did? Is this the only Mac oriented group you folk have joined? I don't recall the exact release date, heck it might even be out now.. I don't know. Which was kinda the reason why I posted the original thread. I was looking for relative information. I surely was not expecting a bunch of <<what the hell are you talking about>> replies.

So.. If anyone has pertinent information, you're input would be appreciated. You can reply to this post or direct to my email, if you wish.

Who was this email from exactly?

It certainly was not an official e-mail. Sounds like either a dodgy scam or a company that is talking out of its arse.

P.S Mac OS X has always cost $129. If you got it cheaper you either got the student version, a discount with another retailer or a dodgy copy.

However, along with this innovation, Apple needs to support SLI/CF configurations for graphics cards.

The great thing about Snow Leopard is the fact that it will utilize the processing power of the GPU as normal processor beefiness.

Apple wants to implement this to the best of their ability. So what do they do? They make SLI and CrossFire work in OS X (and more specifically, SLI work on their boards).

The practical upshot of this is that not only could the professionals get four of the lowest-end Mac Pro graphics cards and have a twelve-core machine (eight Xeon, four GPU), but gamers could get four of the lowest-end graphics cards and run Crysis with everything on very high and 2x AA (HOLY COW, THE POWER REQUIRED FOR THAT LAST BIT IS MIND-BOGGLING. LOOK AT IT BOGGLE).:p

It was a legitimate sender, and I bought Leopard directly from Apple store. Got it the day it came available.

I'm curious though.. why is it that most discussions I've come across in this forum are more like pissing contests?? Who know more then idiot buddy who don't know ****. what's with all the bad vibes man?? To date on three posts, I've been told off, insulted and treated like I'm a nobody who's worth nothing. I guess I'll be leaving this fine road side pub and hope that somewhere out there is a Mac support group that actually helps people and not assume anything.

Have fun doing.... whatever

Sorry bud, but there is absolutely no way that Apple sent an email to you (and you only) regarding retail details on a product that is so far from finalization that they most likely haven't decided on pricing details.

Sorry that you had such a bad experience with the Forum. I participate in several forums, including this one; and I have found that one must expect candor in some of the replies to our posts. When one takes a controversial or antagonistic position, like response is usually forthcoming.

I have been a member of this Forum since September of last year, and I have found the members to be unusually helpful. This Forum has resolved many issues, including some dumb questions, from me . . . . a PC junkie, coming off 15+ years of Windows experience.

Good luck to you.
