How far did you get? It's one of my favourite FFs but it does take a while for the story to start going somewhere.

Not too far, maybe 2 hours over the course of most of a week. It sure felt like much longer than a couple hours, though. Just boring. It literally kept putting me to sleep. For me it was more the gameplay that I didn't care for - junctioning and drawing magic spells from enemies. I just couldn't get into it. I didn't want to struggle through it for another 40+ hours.. So I moved on.

That reminds me -- I forgot I bought that for my iPad. I played the first season on 360, and often felt the story had more "critical" moments than the TV show. This gives me something to do later on this evening...

I just started the 2nd chapter. Really enjoying it so far.

I'm back into Bloodborne after a hiatus of a month or so. Downed both Vicar Amelia and the Witches of Wickham* this morning so I'm pretty pleased with myself :)

*This isn't the right word but it's something like that!

Edit: Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?

Picked up Bloodborne last night, couldn't resist the weekend deal on PSN for €39,99. :)

Having to finally look up on the internet how to equip weapons was a great start. :D

Is it normal to feel completely lost in the beginning? No idea where I'm supposed to go, what I'm supposed to do (besides killing anything that moves), how to use weapons/items... I just wandered off in some direction, started fighting a lot, dying a lot... I picked the saw cleaver and pistol as my first weapons, was this a smart choice?

Yes.... First part is basically grind and grind and then go back to hunters dream and level up yourself and your weapons. You need to fortify your weapons and redo it over and over again until your at the point where the slog becomes tolerable.

The learning curve is very high, I have got to the point in the game after killing blood starved beast and now I am stuck as the difficulty has ramped up three fold again. Keep getting killed by the kidnap bag monsters who can kill in one good hit and its incredibly frustrating always.

I've been sucked into Splatoon since I got it. Very fun shooter game, and this is coming from someone who doesn't play shooter games.

After 2 week gaming hiatus, got to play a bit over the weekend.

Picked up Splatoon friday. Stayed up until 4am playing multi-player, I couldn't put it down!
Really fun game, though not sure how long it will keep my attention.

More Bloodborne. Cleared Upper Cathedral Ward beating Celestial Emissary and Ebrietas, and got halfway through Nightmare of Mensis beating Micolash. To think, I've only got half a zone and three bosses left to finally beat this game :) I will hopefully have time to finish it this weekend.

Decided not to start Witcher 3 until beating Bloodborne. The anticipation is killing me :D

Yep it's very good. If only Nintendo could give us New IP's on a regular basis, not just one or two every other generation of hardware....

It remains to be seen what they do with the IP though. I hope we get sequels, I hope the character turns up in Smash Bros and Mario Kart!

Yeah I still lament many fantastic games that have seemingly died. FZero was stunning on the GameCube and not a whif only fleeting cameos since.

Pilotwings was stunning but we've only had mini games and a poor 3DS outing since the N64.

Wow, hold your horses there. Let's first hope that Nintendo delivers on all the free DLC they promised for this game, cause as it's stands, it's pretty short on content. Otherwise this game will fade quickly into distant memory as we get bored of the limited content...

True, but they already added a new level, weapon, and Ranked Battles after only a few days after being on sale. Also, over 144,000 retail copies sold in Japan during its first week. Doesn't count eShop downloads or sales outside of Japan, so I'd say it's off to a good start. To put that number in perspective, I believe Mario Kart 8 sold 3 times that amount.

To me a game shouldn't require a 5-10 hour commitment before it becomes enjoyable.

I don't mind increased challenge, but increased challenge and unfairness are clearly at too different ends in Bloodborne.

I finally found myself making progress yesterday. Got much further than I ever got previously, and then the game set up a trap. Led me into an area clearly intending me to die there - end result all that progress destroyed and back to beginning. That sort of BS is not a fair challenge - that's simply annoying. The lack of checkpoints in a difficult game to me is making the game impossible to get any real enjoyment from it. I should be rewarded for having to get past a horde of enemies, taking them down with at least some form of checkpoint. Not berated by having to get past them 5 million times only to die when the game designers decide to play 'feck you' with the gamer.

I love the aesthetics, the idea of the game. The mechanics are to me utter BS and utterly ruining what could have been for me a fantastic game.

There is no reason a game can not be welcoming to gamers as well as sadomasochistic to those with those tendencies.

I already see lots if copies of bloodborne on the trade websites. Clearly I'm not the only one who bought it wanting to like it, but finding the entire experience too much work to ever be called entertainment.

Hmm, this is kind of where I'm at right now, and I just barely started the game. Finally managed to kill all those bastards patrolling the streets, the shooters, the rabid dogs, the crow things, the big monster banging on the gate...took me about an hour, really taking my time, dealing with them one by one. Then I get on the bridge, two super dogs jump on me at once and kill me. Fair enough, I hadn't encountered these enemies before and had no chance to learn their attack patterns yet. But the fact that now I have to go through all that again just to even get to the dogs and try again doesn't sit well with me. Who has that kind of time?

I'm just going off the pushing Nintendo has done for this on social media. They're really going for it with this game. All this effort to me screams that Splatoon is going to stick around a bit longer than a single game. I mean hell they put no effort into promoting that Steel Diver IP and we've got two games from it so far!

That's actually all part of it. It's incredibly frustrating in the beginning, then you start figuring out alternate pathways, and opening shortcuts...

PS-you don't HAVE to fight those dogs...

Good luck!

Took me three tries to get there again. Took the hidden way to avoid the dogs. Died there cause I couldn't maneuver in the small hallway to kill the big guys there. So....back to square 1. I feel like I wasted an evening of gaming and made no real progress. Starting to feel like my very limited gaming time may be too valuable for this grind.

Yeah I invested hours and hours and finally got passed this and thought I was making great progress.

Now I'm at a point where it feels like I'm starting all over again as the difficulty ramps up and now I have the same mindless grind and frustration until I get to the point where I can make progress ... And to be frank, I honestly can't be bothered. The game feels like it's gone FU just after spending hours investing time & effort and gallons of frustration for it to just be cheap and make to have to do it all again after blood starved beast....

I've given up. I'm bored of frustration.

I'd LOVE another F-Zero game. The GameCube version looked and played amazing -- albeit I found it pretty difficult.

I'll try again, but I'm not sure how much more.

I kind of regret buying digitally now. The game still has decent resale value, but Now I am stuck with it.

I really want to play Splatoon! Glad to hear it's fun. I'm making myself finish all my PS3 games, then I'll get rid of the PS3 and buy a Wii U. Hoping to get one sometime in the fall.

Yeah, they've been really pushing Splatoon. I'm hoping it's successful.

Taustin,

Good decision, you owe it to yourself to at least try the first boss encounter. Find the shortcut around the werewolves. Not the one down to the left of the werewolves to the sewers. It's behind some coffins before the werewolves down and through some dog kennels. This path can also take you to the sewers through a large structure (don't go this way yet). You want to go through a house through a closed door and open a shortcut to the lamp, which will allow you to totally bypass the mob section. With the shortcut open, you will be able to find the Cleric Beast back through the house up some stairs.

Once you find the cleric beast you will gain 1 insight which will allow you to level your character at hunter's dream. Level up and upgrade you weapon if you have enough blood stone shards. For new souls players, I recommend a Strength build, but it really depends on which weapon you use, since your weapon scales with stats. Level Vitality, Strength, and Endurance. Don't ignore endurance! You might need to grind a little to level up a bit or buy molotovs before tackling the boss, depends on your skill in combat.

Use the time grinding on the early levels to practice your visceral attacks:
Backstab: Sneak Up, R2 strong charged attack, R1 finishing move.
Counter: Shoot your gun on enemy downswing, R1 finishing move.
If you pull off a successful visceral move, you should hear a 'chug' sounds which indicates you can do the R1 finishing move. Learning the visceral attacks is crucial to succeeding at this game.

Good luck!

Hmm, I'm surprised the difficulty level ramped up so quick after Blood Starved Beast. It probably means you are in zone you are not ready for yet. If you get kidnapped by the bag guys, do not try and tackle Yargul now, immediately run up the stairs from your prison cell to the lamp and warp out. There are only two bag guys in Cathedral Ward, and they can be avoided. Your next boss should be Vicar Amelia in Cathedral Ward, followed by Witch of Hemwick through Hemwick Channel Lane. If you are really struggling, I recommend watching a video walk through. I recommend the ones by Lucian's Sword on youtube.

But it sounds like you may of had enough, and I totally understand. I've given up on difficult games before out of frustration too, that's ok. If a game is no longer enjoyable, it's not worth playing.

Cheers, and happy gaming!

Yeah I got kidnapped and taken to that zone, and spent ages trying to kill those and it was futility.

Only problem is those bag monsters now appear in Cathedral Ward when they were not there before either. So that difficulty has ramped in that zone.

I'm not saying i've given up yet though ;) I haven't traded the game in - there is still hope that I get a fit of playing and see it through eventually.

I'll try again, but I'm not sure how much more.

At times I really really HATE the game. Then I make the smallest modicum of progress and somehow its just enough to get me to have 1 more go. But yeah - I'm having a rest for the moment and will try again at some stage after Witcher 3 / Splatoon & Yoshi & Batman this month too.
