Question about gaming via GeForce Now - is a physical connection to my router required to have a good experience? I have pretty solid wireless around the house, but haven't gotten around to having ethernet brought up to the study from the basement. I'll do it someday, but in the meantime can I do some cloud gaming over wireless and not have it suck?
I’ve used Xbox Cloud Gaming on a TV and works fine with wireless, but I do have a strong signal where the TV is. Honestly, for cloud gaming, single player games should not be an issue even with higher latency as long as the bandwidth remains consistent. Latency might be an issue for some multi-player games but I doubt most users would notice. All my opinion, of course.

It depends on the specifics of your local environment. I do cloud gaming over wifi using 5GHz and 6Ghz as those channels are quite clean where I am.

Best thing to do is try the 5GHz and see how it works.

In other words - maybe. But if you have problems post the details here and I'm happy to take a look, as others will be too.

Right now, I'm only playing on PC - I have a mid-range rig (Core i5 12500, RTX 4070, 32 GB RAM), but it's good enough to run most games on 4K with DLSS upscaling. I used to play on console, too, but I found the current gen unconvincing and since complete exclusives seem to slowly phase out, I could play some of the things I would previously have played on Playstation on my PC.
I had originally planned to upgrade again in 2026, but with memory prices being where they are, it might also be 2027. Technically, I could stick even longer with my current system, but the general plan is to switch to AMD and see if switching to Linux as my primary OS on the PC is feasible.

Could do what I do ... I buy one month Ultimate codes every month for $12
I think even with the downgrades and price hikes it's still cheaper to do the trick where you buy a bunch of Xbox Live Gold (now known as GamePass Core or whatever) then get one month of GPU to convert all the time to GPU. Last time I did it was about $11 CAD a month I think?

For gaming it’s mainly PC. It’s almost 5 years old, but the i7 10700 and the RTX 3070 still do everything I need, so don’t intend to upgrade soon (when I do it will be a whole new build). I also play on console (PS5 and Switch 2) depending on the games. For regular computer use it’s my MacBook Air!

Mostly do some light gaming on my daily driver PC: Ryzen 9 5900X / 64GB / 11.5TB / 4060ti-16GB. Most of the main components of the build were bought in 2023 (major exception is GPU which was last year's Christmas present from my wife).

The computer is also used for work, so its original configuration was meant for running multiple VMware VMs (hence the large RAM and storage). It has separate sets of storage devices used for separate isolated "environments" (selected at boot) so that 11.5TB is actually (1TB nvme + 4TB sata) for my work environment, (500GB SATA) for a Linux partition that doubles as the master boot environment, and (2TB nvme + 4TB nvme) for my personal environment.

Currently have some older consoles in my household (most commonly used one is a PS4 bought sometime around 2015-ish) - plan to buy whatever is current shorty after GTA VI is finally released.

I was about to say “you’ll be fine” until you said “up to the study” and I worried it’s all a bit latency prone.

I get good performance when in the same room as my main WiFi router. But if there are extenders in the mix I doubt you’ll enjoy it.

Christmas holidays can be a good time to chase worse around the house 😬

Couple weeks ago I built a new gaming PC (it is used only for gaming and my MacBook Pro 14" for everything else):

In addition to the above, I should also mention that before I built my new PC and I only had my MacBook Pro 14" as my only computer, I did play some old games on my MacBook such as Return to Castle Wolfenstein, DOOM 3, Quake, Quake III Arena. Now that I have my new PC, it is my main gaming platform but I do still have the original Quake installed on my MacBook. All these games were using the Mac Source Ports: https://www.macsourceports.com/

My primary system for everything is a Mac Mini with 24 GB. For the couch I have my iPad Pro M4.

For games I use a BeeLink AMD890 with 32 GB.

My actual PC is:
- 5700G
- 16GB
- 9060 XT 16GB

Owners of a Steam Deck, what do you think about it? I have a Macbook Air M1 that I'm not using that much and I'm thinking about sell it and buy a Steam Deck. But I already have a PC gaming so, don't know if it worth.

That’s funny, I’m in the exact same boat with my 10700 and 3070. It still runs everything fairly well and I don’t intend to upgrade until RAM prices (hopefully) come back down to earth in 2027.

My Steamdeck has honestly probably gotten as much use as my PC this year playing through Persona 3r and 5r and chipping away at some other older games.

The SD is fine. I just recently heard they are discontinuing the LCD version. Valve claims they want a doubling of performance within the same power envelope. Which I don't think is gonna happen for another couple generations (I think) so it is a relatively safe buy.

Not a gamer but the "business" PC is a Linux box, Ryzen 4600G, 16 GB, 512 GB NVME, 1 TB HDD. The Ryzen's graphics are more than fast enough. Mint Cinnamon 22.2. Will upgrade to 22.3 after estimated tax season (so late January.)

M1 MacBook Air base configuration for the laptop still on Sonoma at least until March.

Shiny new A16 iPad, the last model free of Augmented Idiocy on 26.2.

Phone is a Motorola G ($129) with all sorts of software fluff stripped out. It may have a browser built in, I never checked. It makes and receives phone calls, (and has a very good call blocking feature) and it also makes and receives texts. That is all I need it to do.

Still find it too expensive, but that has to do with my declining gaming habits. I did the gold>ultimate conversion up till now, but it runs out start of next year. I lean to steam more and more, it’s simple and there are often great deals to be found for PC that can be added to steam library. And Xbox controllers work well on a PC which is a must for me.

I do still have my old gaming PC, but most of the games I still care about run much better on my M3 Pro than on my i5 9400f/RX 580.

In the last couple of years I’ve found very little reason to fire up my PC. It can go unplugged for months! I really only boot it up periodically to run Windows Update.

Mainly play games on my Switch and Switch 2. My Series X used to be second, but since Microsoft basically killed it, it’s now collecting dust.

My gaming PC Ryzen 7 5800X with 4070 is built mainly for strategy/sim games with Windows 11 Pro. GOG is my primary store.

I have a Retroid Pro 4 for emulating up to the PS2/GC era.

My Mini M4 is mainly used for anything productivity.

I have a 5800X3D paired with a 4070.

It's been a great machine, but I think it'll be the last *traditional* build I do. I'm finding that I'm just as happy gaming at 1440p than 4K, so smaller builds focusing on performance/watt are more interesting to me.
As do I (well, I have the vanilla 5800X) and as will I, excepting the 1440p vs 4K thing. I both notice the difference and already have a 4K screen for my gaming rig. I have a run of the mill mid size tower (built at the height of component penury during the pandemic and with a 3070) but will be heavily influenced by whatever Optimum Tech has recently built when it’s time to upgrade. He builds tiny powerhouses and has even done custom 3D printing to improve airflow in more generic cases. Apple has spoiled me on performance per watt and absolute silence most of the time. I will aim to duplicate it on my next build.

To the OP’s point: my main gaming device tends to be my console. My gaming PC comes a close second (probably in the 55/45 range) and occasionally I don’t have either to hand, so I game on my Mac or iPad. That last tends to be limited to Solitaire, Sudoku, and HoMM 3 [Heroes III HD technically]. I used to run game emulators on the iPad but it’s a pain for a lazy old man. I still use emulators on both the Mac and Windows.

sold my MacBook Air a few months ago. never used it.

PC is my main platform. the specs are in my signature. if you can't see it then:

9950X3D
64GB RAM
RTX 5090
5TB SSD

i have a PS5 Slim digital and a Nintendo Switch 2. currently playing Tears of the Kingdom and Death Stranding 2.

Mostly play on PS5 (also have a Switch, PS4 and PS Vita, but haven't used those in months)

Rarely boot into Windows on my cMP5,1

Dream machine is a 9950x3d with a Radeon GPU on Linux. Been missing PC gaming lately. I play on my MacBook sometimes (haven't tried any of the AAA releases on Apple Silicon, but I gotta). Honestly considering buying a 6900xt for my Mac Pro (I know the bottleneck gonna be atrocious but I can always move the GPU into another PC later down the line)

I hear ya.
I had no idea RAM prices were crazy until I went check them the other day. The fact that, right now, 32GB costs twice what I paid for 2 years ago, completely baffled me. And if I had to guess, Crucial leaving the consumer market probably won’t help. Just hoping my current rig doesn’t die until prices become more manageable!
