Is that actually true? I would think that it would be fairly common for normal people to have both a desktop and a laptop, at least. Or maybe my friends are just too nerdy.

It's far more common for someone to own a desktop and a tablet/smartphone than a desktop and laptop. Forums like this one are a poor reflection of the overall user base due to its users generally being more tech savvy and leaning more towards the prosumer side of the audience rather than the casual "I use my machine for email, paying bills and reading" crowd.

9070 XT
64GB RAM
2TB SSD

Built back in March after giving up my previous build (5800X and 6900 XT) for an M3 Air. While I did like the Air, I was thinking of turning it into a permanent desktop due to ergonomics and I was missing mouse and keyboard playing on a PS5, so sold them off.

Most people just have one computer, and some folks may have none. When my daughter's were in high school, they received chromebooks - there was no need to have a home computer for school work.

My kid's friend's thought it odd that I had so many computers

We're the opposite have a load of them for different purposes and just about to buy another PC as my daughter has a need for Uni. They are simply tools to fit purpose and if that purpose results in revenue, more the merrier...

Computers also provide entertainment and be repurposed with a little imagination. Never had a problem in the spend as they always paid off.

I know a fair few people who don't even own a personal computer at all. iPhone (or smartphone) only, or perhaps iPhone and work laptop.

I can't get my head wrapped around that, I find that computers have so many upsides, and uses - but hey, different strokes for different folks
I agree. But I guess if your main focus is social media with some banking and surfing on the side it's useful enough.

Normal people own a cheap Windows laptop and that's it. Most people nowadays who own a desktop are gamers or people who need a workstation (artists, engineers etc)

My wife has my 'old' M1 MacBook Air but does 99% of her stuff on her phone. So much functionality and security are centered around mobile users these days ... heck I find it easier to do most of my banking stuff through my phone than the web sites!

My PC sits next to my desk for 1 reason, gaming… Mac is my productivity computer, but ironically if I was still doing Unreal Engine environments, that would also be on PC by virtue of it’s graphic card.

Did you get a new m series Mac yet ?

Just got a Macbook pro 2021 16 inch M1 with 32 ram off of Ebay for about 670.00. I am really impressed by that machine. Great display, fast, no fan noise, looks great mainly using it for programming. has sequoia OS on it, not sure if I will update to Tahoe. The M1 is best computer I have ever owned as I typically buy used many years back. Use the Macbook 16 inch intel i7 for doing internet stuff and some programming as well running xquartz to connect my Linux machines. I can now see why Macbook pros cost so much as the make my many Thinkpads look like toys!

Just finished ordering all the parts for my new build. I was not in a rush but when I heard the 5070 ti was being discontinued I decided to jump in and buy one while they were still available. Of course I read today that they changed that and will not discontinue it. Oh well, looking forward to putting this all together once everything gets in.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D
CPU Cooler: Corsair iCUE Link Titan 360 RX LCD 360mm AIO
Motherboard: ASUS TUF Gaming B850-BTF WiFi (AM5)

System runs amazing, I could not be happier with how it handles the games I want to play. Everything is set to high and ultra. CPU and AIO work really well together, not sure I have seen the CPU go over 65 C. Generally sitting between 50 and 60 C. The AMD CPU is fantastic, can't remember who but someone mentioned trying AMD on this forum and it was a great move. Cheaper then the intel I was looking at and handles everything I throw at it really well. Super smooth and fast. I added an MSI Ultra wide screen 34" 200hz (I believe) along side an older Acer 27" 80hz screen. Last thing I am going to do is mount the ultra wide screen on a floating arm.

For the audio I was using a small 2 channel receiver. I had a bunch of speakers and subs from when I used to have a 5.1 cinema surround system. I have not used that in years as I switched to a simpler sound bar. I now have 2 tower speakers and a powered sub running out of a Denon receiver that is sending the audio via HDMI from the GPU. In games the rumble and sound is amazing. I may at some point add the centre and rear surround sound, but not completely sold on the extra space needed for those speakers when things already sound amazing.

I’ve been wrestling with whether this configuration equivalent from the M5 generation will be enough for me… it’s a really convenient setup: drop in replacement when I want it.

How do you game on it? Steam for Mac, Crossover, Parallels?
A Mac for gaming would depend on the games that you want to play. Personally I think a PC is the best for computer gaming, a Mac leaves a lot to be desired outside of the AAA games that are available. I am sure you can run some games in Parallels, but you are taking a hit right there on your computers performance, splitting up the RAM and how many cores you can use. You can build or buy a fairly decent PC that will run everything well and not be a compromise. That is again if you are wanting the widest selection of games available, if you are just wanting some of the games that come out native for Mac like Assassins Creed, Laura Croft, Cyber Punk and the few others then you are good. Anything beyond that I would recommend a PC personally.

I’m not interested in doing what I already do. I want to hear from someone who’s attempting something different but may have some overlap with my own use case scenarios.

fair enough. In my opinion the only real question is what games do you want to play. With that you can look to see if those games are playable on a Mac. I did some gaming via cloud services like what Ubisoft has and for a bit I used Xbox gamepass and played in a browser. They worked really well for that with a PS4 controller.

@maflynn would be a good person to ask, they switched from playing games on PC to gaming on macOS.
Thanks for the mention

I have the base M4 Max Studio and crossover works well enough for most of the games.

A good for instance would be Bethesda's Starfield, which has a high GPU requirement (higher then prior Bethesda games). On my PC, I was easily getting 60 FPS with the 7800XT with high without any frame generation. In Crossover with my M4 Max, I'm getting mid 50s with the details set to low and upscaling/frame generation. Boosting the image quality to high, the FPS drops to low 30s.

The M5's GPU performance is supposed to be significantly better then the M4, so I would expect better results. I'm largely pleased with gaming on my M4, but it is noticeably slower then running it natively on my PC, even with the M4 having superior numbers in the benchmarks.

Obviously native macos gaming, provides excellent results, such as Cyberpunk.

I don't play any games with anti-cheat, so that's something I cannot comment.

Another option is GeforceNow, my experience playing that is that you "can" get better results then crossover, but by and large its inconsistant performance. Regardless of your internet bandwidth, you can expect a fair amount of lagginess and stutters. I was using GFN for a little while, but it just wasn't worth the cost.

Since Parallels does not support DirectX 12, I don't know anyone who uses it for any games other than older 32 bit games or older games that will only run under it.

I'm currently playing Allied General. It's a Windows 95 game from 1995 and I can only run it under Parallels. The game require the display to be set to 256 colors which Windows 11 under Parallels will do. Crossover uses the MacOS display settings so games can not be set to 256 colors.
