The two of you are ridiculous and probably just out of diapers. When one of those underpaid, overworked, dedicated objects of your hatred saves your lives, you'll probably shrug and say that he owed it to you. The reason they are the way they are is because they have to deal with ungrateful people like you all day. /rant :)

Absolutely. I don't think they have any idea of how bad it would be without a police force.
As someone who sticks almost completely within the law I fear nothing from them, I've never had a bad encounter with them.

I just smiled and appeared genuinely confused as to why I was pulled over. I hate it when women cry about things like that; I think we are better than that. :)

I know and I agree. I've never actually done it but I think if I was pulled over I would genuinely start crying just because I really can't afford a ticket. :p

So, your 14th birthday is when?

Oh my you're an angry person.
It's a shame when parents raise their children to be so hateful, isn't it? His mother probably made him kill his hamster with a hammer or something. :(

Seriously though, I don't understand the hostility toward law enforcement, not at all. I'm sincerely grateful for what they do for so little pay.

Honesty will take you ways if you didn't screw up big time.

People really don't appreciate police officers until they are in a situation where they need one, or realize how f*ed up things would be if there were none or if they were all corrupt.

We are blessed to have law enforcement that is as a-political as it gets.

I'm torn. I don't know what to think about law enforcement. On one hand I understand their service and the risks they take.
They enforce the laws and don't make them - I understand that as well.
But, what if one day a law is passes making it illegal to criticize the president. How many officers would arrest somebody who has that kind of warrant? I think most would.

wow that was an incredible video that I've posted to my facebook account. Thanks for linking.

The worst kind of oinkers are hwy patrol. Yeah right they're really out there trying to serve US and protect OUR best interests. I hate those oinkers

Wow. I would highly recommend you travel to most undeveloped/developing countries to experience what anarchy is like. I mean really live there for a year. I did that recently and now feel so happy when I see police regulating people to follow rules enacted by elected officials from my democratic government. It's really an awesome system.

I am polite. I say yes sir, no sir and comply with what is required

Cops are not bad people

although according to the video linked in this thread, even by saying "no sir", you've just given incriminating evidence to the police! I wonder if you could say something like "Thank God I live in a country with a 5th ammendment saying I don't have to answer that" and not sound like a smartass.

PS sorry for the triple post everyone, there were just too many good comments.

I think this thread is going to degenerate very rapidly.

I dealt with police alot at my last job - but that was in a work environment. I worked with officers of all ranks. The undercover guys are the funniest, they can transform themselves so quickly and they don't look like police. After I was laid off once of my former customers contacted me regarding a crime involving a laptop. I shouldn't go into details but I did help in the investigation.
It surprises me how many people don't know about Encrypting File System.

The world is definitely an interesting place when it comes to the legal process observed in different countries. :)

Unless of course the Patriot Act is involved in which case the 5th doesn't apply...
Just saying!

wow. Seem like some one does not know what they are talking about or really never have dealt with many cops.

I have been pulled over and talk to by Hwy patrol as the driver or the passenger in the car 5 or 6 times now. Of those pull over there have been tickets. Hell I got one of them and no real way out of it. The cops have always been very respectful and never bad. I also know why some times you see them flying 90 to 100 plus down the road with out their lights on and most of the time they are in a rush to get to a call.
When my brother flip his cars a few years ago the hwy patrol that responded to the call told him that he was doing 120 mph to get to the accident and the lights were not flashing. After wards he did 80 in a 70 to take my brother back to were I was picking him up after wards. Either way I have no problem with the 120. It was to respond to a pretty bad wreck that turn out to have no injuries but when you get a report that a car started rolling you think bad.

As for times I have dealt with cops for me being pulled over for something I am will into the double digits. I lost count around 12-13 times. I have multiple speeding tickets and a lot more warnings and of all the cops I have dealt with I will have to say only one of them was crap and in many ways should not have the badge the power went to his head.

Now minus that one crappy cop, I have had multiple ones that have been all bussiness. Other ones that jokes with me..
One that gave me a warning, called me dumb ass and then told me to get out of his sights. I kind of deserved being called a dumb ass for that as well. I was in my brother stuck and damn near did a 180 in front of a cop trying to spin the tires after leaving the light. I will take that over a ticket any day.

Now for the part about getting warning verse tickets as this is a field of my expertise as the above shows. One you have to remember is by the time the cop has gotten out of his car he has already decided if you are going to get a ticket or a warning. It is easy to go from warning to ticket and it is very rare to go from ticket to warning and for that one it general takes something pretty big that had happen for a cop to do that. Best you can do is hope for a warning and just stay respectful. Pull off the road completely into a parking lot if possible. If on the highway get over as far as possible. This is for both yours and the cops safety. Turn off your car and role down your windows and keep your hands in plain sight until the cops get there. Tell him everything you are doing like if you insurance card is in the glove box tell him that when you go reaching for it.

What happens if you get pulled over and are straight up completely honest and respectful immediately with the officer. Compliment him/her on his line of work (which I doubt would really be insincere from anyone anyway) , I'd tell him I watch Cops ALL the time, (which I do), and how much I appreciate their service. and be straight up with them regarding everything. Do you think an officer would be so appreciative and taken aback by this that theyd let you off of a misdemeanor or two?

Edit: let me rephrase this. If you are competely complent with a cop, than you are not sucking up, and you should be well aware that disclosing anything is allowing it to be used against you. Obviously, if you are tell the cop what he wants to know, than you're doing the opposite of what you should do if you don't wanna get in trouble.

What I'm sayig is that I'm sure cops never get this and would appreciate it and give you a break

I've tried it both ways. I've been honest and got a warning for a speeding ticket. And I've been honest and got the book thrown at me.

The only two things that I've seen help when getting pulled over (no offense intended) is if you're military or ex-military, and/or your a women (not as effective w/ women police).

Every couple of years or so I'll have to work with law enforcement for a day. And let me tell you, for that day there's nobody I appreciate more than the six guys there to prevent the whole situation from turning into something straight out of Silence of the Lambs.

So yaaaaay, officers of the law!

Yah, 70 to 90 grand a year is underpaid if they are underpaid they don't manage their money very well.

It's twice as good as a lot of other union gigs like carpentry, plumbing and electrical where employees "somehow" manage to live comfortably even with seasonal layoffs

where the hell are you getting your numbers.

I have seen the numbers for I know the state of Texas and even the top 10 cities do not pay there beat cops that much a year oh and btw the top paid cops are not from big cites. Ever city that was in the top 10 where from those small rich towns that are normal suburbs of the big city.

The median salary for a patrol officer in the US is 45-50k a year.

Now supervisor and deceives can start getting up to the mid to high 60's but you are still not even touch 70k. Now the upper administration for cops yeah I can see than getting to the 6 figures but still your every day cop will not be making even 50k a year -- Translation not much for the amount of crap and BS they have to put up with. It really is not a good pay job for some one with a college degree. It is kind of hard to become a cop now with out a 4 year degree or military experience.

The average teacher makes 14 grand a year to start and manages to buy supplies for their students outside of grant writing and manages to live in basic comfort I make 12 grand a year and live comfortably raising a family so tell me what cops are doing wrong? Don't plead to me with the emotional value of their job its not the highest risk job it doesn't even make the top ten for stressful jobs involving physical harm, and it pays twice as well as those jobs too. When you factor EVERYTHING in cops have a gravy job. Ok lets look at some numbers here's one link for reference if you like you can find more:

http://hubpages.com/hub/Most_Dangerous_Jobs

Oh looky here cops ain't on the list...as a matter of fact the only other guys who drive around in cars all day just like them who are at more risk and actually made the top ten are CAB DRIVERS!

again were are you getting your numbers. I again know for a fact that that the 14 grand for a starting teacher is completely BS.

Trying doubling that and you will be on the low end of starting salary for teachers. Average teacher salary is around 40k a year.

Also I cam going to call complete and utter BS on your 12 grand number. Both the 14 and 12 are below the poverty line for a 2 person family much less one with kids. It goes up very quickly. 10 grand a year is the poverty line for a single person.
Sorry but you kind of fried anything but just making up BS.

Btw you need to remember a factor on cops pay is it is a job now that requires a college degree same as teacher so when compare cops/teachers pay for people with college degree they are on the low side of the scale.

When I first started working (a few days after I got married) I was making only $800 a month and my wife was unemployed - we got through just fine for a year. You can live pretty comfortably if you give up a lot of things - as long as you have the basics - shelter+food and a used car, you're good to go.

True I know it is possible but the numbers the guy threw up had to much of the smell of BS for me to buy the 12 grand one.

70-90 grand for cops which is way to high.
Then 14k a year for teachers which is less than 1/2 the very low end of the start salary scale.
