Ordered the Air 256gb in Cloud White late morning to pick up on release date. 4-6 hrs later, I went to check again, it was not available to pick up on release date. The other 3 colors are available for pick up (256gb).

Decided to go with White, since I usually get dark color phones, so this time I want something that stands out and "loud". haha.

Got myself the iPhone 17 Pro Max in silver. Was really thinking about going for the orange model - it did look quite cool on the pictures - but thought it might look a bit too much in real life. And while I like blue, I eventually went for classic and good old silver. There’s gonna be a case on it, so ain’t gonna see much of it anyway.

Any reason why you are going with a smaller size?

Difficult to say. Just wanted something else. Too big? No don't think that's the reason. Sometimes.... Orderd the Air because, yeah ALMOST the same, bigger screen. But also orders the normal Pro, because in the end, I want the best camera's.

Why is the iPhone 17 (not Air, not Pro) getting lost in the noise? The press only talks about the Air and the Pro, and the poll in this thread reflects that.

Is the iPhone 17 the "middle child" that gets overlooked by everyone?

iPhone 17 is the old reliable. It will likely sell very well to the masses like the models before it but it's not high profile like the Air or Pros.

The base iPhone is adequate. It does most things well and good enough for most people, but it gets overshadowed by the overkill of the Pro models capabilities and premium perception. Most people want the best, even if they don't need the best. Then comes the Air, its exciting new form factor is a breath of fresh air (pun intended) in a stale lineup. So, while I do believe the base iPhone is slept on, especially last two years, I think it just doesn't stand out enough.

I just went for a Sage iPhone 17 coming from an iPhone 14 PM. I've been buying the Pro Max models when I upgrade since they came out. This time though, I find that the specs are similar between the 17 and 17 PM save for a slightly smaller screen size and lack of telephoto lens. And I save $300! I was finding the PM unwieldy in some of my pants' pockets. As far as camera, I only use it for "casual" photos. For serious photography, I use a traditional SLR.

I was excited about the Air but backpedalled when I saw what I would give up. And, yes, I'm also concerned about possible heat and battery issues.

I've ordered both the 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max in Cosmic Orange; not sure which I'll keep. The 17 Pro seems to have roughly the same battery life as the 16 Pro Max that I have currently, so thinking of moving down to the smaller Pro. But not sure if I'll miss the larger screen size or not. The 16 Pro Max feels borderline unwieldy in some of my pants pockets (I wear a 29x30), so kind of looking to get a smaller phone.

In my personal opinion - and without wanting to offend anyone - I think many people just pick Pro because...its Pro. Just to have the best of the best and the most expensive one. And I say this as someone buying the Pro phones myself since years. But only for the 120hz screen... so I was happy to just pick up the "cheap" 17 now. And I think the 17 is VERY underrated.

I believe the regular iPhones are usually Apple's best sellers anyway. They just don't get as much hype online.

Interesting, have to google about it. Im not that much into this thing - just noticed that almost no one here, on YT and everywhere else is talking that much about it.

Yep, correct, if you separate out the Plus, Pro and Pro Max. Even if you combined them, the base still sells more units.

CIRP (a US-based analytics/market research firm) reports the following 2024 sales percentages by model class, excluding SE models:

Model class% of iPhone sales in 2024 (non-SE)
Base (standard models)~ 42 %
Plus~ 13 %
Pro~ 19 %
Pro Max~ 26 %

Underated? It’s selling more than the regular 17 pro.

Gonna get the normal 17 in black. Cannot justify any of the other models tbh. Coming from a 14 pro with a dying battery.

Same, except Mist Blue.

My 14 Pro battery capacity is down to 72%, so I wanted to upgrade for 3 primary reasons:

1. Battery life
2. Weight. I'm tired of the Pro's excessive weight on my pinky shelf.
3. USB-C

And the potential #4 is Apple Intelligence, if Apple finally improves it, as it rumoured, with a new Siri.

I couldn't decide between Black and Mist Blue. I went with Mist Blue, even though I usually get black phones. I hope I didn't make a mistake.

I was considering the sage green, but well, I have my midnight M2 MacBook Air. So i didn't want to strive away too much in terms of color.

My battery is at 75% and I was already tempted to upgrade last year because of USB-C but managed to wait somehow. Now with the doubled storage plus not having to miss the pro motion display it was a no-brainer to upgrade!

Went with Orange for my 17 Pro Max. Love the color. Had the Nokia N8 in the same color. Couldn't believe Apple brought out a fun color for the Pro iPhone. Just placed the order now.

I’m having the same debate as I do many years. Have never had a Pro. Have always gone for the smaller form factor—I’m on a 13 mini now. But I’m resigned to the evident fact that those days are gone.

I don’t ask that much of my phone in the end. The 13 mini is fine as far as my performance needs. Could just get a new battery and call it good. BUT I would love to be able to leave my DSLR at home and feel like I’ve still got a good chance at high quality photos.

KEEP MY 13 MINI:
It’s fine. It’s compact. It would still be fine for another year or three.

IPHONE 17 BASE:
Would jump to a phone that has a much better camera. 2x “optical” zoom with no attachments needed. Ditto macro capability. And there are things that have been on pro versions that aren’t new to anyone else but that I haven’t had (optical image stabilization! Dynamic Island!)

Plus there are the niceties that I don’t NEED but would probably enjoy. Larger real estate. ProMotion. Animoji. Obviously a much more powerful processor. Longer battery life. All possible without the Pro.

IPHONE 17 PRO:
The one and only reason I would spring for this is the telephoto lens. I know it has a ton of other photo and video tools. I pride myself on my photos but I’m in no way a pro. But it WOULD be nice to have 8x “optical” zoom. For a couple hundred dollars I could just add a Sandmarc external 2x lens, but then I’m just $100 away from the pro price anyway. And the rest of it is overkill for my use. It would be $300 for the telephoto lens.

Oh, and the orange. Pending seeing it in person, it may be my favorite iPhone color of all time.

I think it’s going to come down to how flush I feel when I’m ready to pull the trigger.

I think they mean underrated in this community/tech communities more broadly. As the poll results in this and the shipment threads show, the base model is by far the least desired model among phone enthusiasts, even though it is the most popular model among the general public.

Got these two cases today. Think both are pretty nice. The Lonli is a leather case for ~30€ and the Spigen is the traditional plastic back and rubber frame. For 10€ the Spigen is also fantastic. I will keep both.

I ordered the following:
:apple: iPhone 17 Pro Max 512GB in deep blue
:apple: Watch Ultra 3 in black with black Trail Loop
:apple: AirPods Pro 3

I also like the silver Pro Max, but since I like dark blue and my 15 Pro Max was also dark blue, and I liked the color, I chose dark blue again.

The orange one reminds me of carrots, carrot juice, or multivitamin juice.😄

I ordered the blue 17 Pro Max. I considered the orange, but I'd want to see the color in person first, and I'm not sure it will really go with every case color. However, I'm wavering a bit on if I should stick with Pro Max or drop back to a Pro. I have a 16 Pro Max now and a 15 PM before, but prior to that always used the regular-size phone.

Silver 17PM. I’ve had the 15PM for 2 years now and I’m interested in the (slightly) larger size and the improved battery life and cameras.

I also did something I’ve never done before: I ordered a case and screen protector to be delivered the day before the phone. I usually race out to BB to grab a case while nervously carrying/coddling my new naked device. Ha ha.
