I'm usually the gadget geek in my relationships, and if my SO were to even hint at the possibility of me waiting for his hand-me-down, we'd have serious issues, to say the least.

That said, every one is different, and every relationship is different. If these posters' wives genuinely don't care, than I certainly don't.

As to the OP, I have had a buyer (someone I know personally) waiting for my 32 GB white 3GS for a couple of weeks now. I've been paid $425, and we agree that I'll put it in priority mail on the 24th. :)

At first my wife didn't care about iPhones (from the 2007 first gen). Than I gave my mom refurn $250 iPhone first gen when AT&T was selling them.

Oncey wife found out my mother was using an iPhone, she has gotten jealous.

But she wanted 3g. So in July 2008 she got an iPhone 3g.

Than last June 2009, we both weren't eligible or full upgraded. I told her to keep her 3G while I pay $399 for a partial upgrade. She demanded of I get one at $399, she gets one also! So I had to give to to her.

I sold her old 3G for $350. That was suppose to offset the $399 partial 3G upgrade price. Of course, wife kept the cash I got from craigslist and spent it shopping.

Now with iPhone 4, we are both getting full upgrades. I actually ended up paying getting my iPhone 3GS from a friend who didn't want it for $540 so I could keep my upgrade. But since we used the partial $399 upgrade last year for the 3g for my wife, she doesn't qualify for upgrade, even the partial upgrade till 02/2011. But my sister is one my account also and doesn't need the lastest/greates. So I am using my sisters upgrade to getvmy wife a iPhone 4. I am going to give my sister (whose using a 3g my wife's 3gS which is practically new since apple just replaced a crack). So my wife gets a new iPhone 4.

My 32 GB 3GS will be kept as my backup/experimental phone. I will use the 8GB 3G from my sister as am iPod touch/mp3 player on the treadmill/gym.

Man that is just confusing:confused:

Look, everyone is different. My wife doesn't care about electronics. She likes to use them but doesn't care to know the difference between last years model and this years. She just wants it to work and appreciates the convenience it offers. On the other hand she has things she wants that take priority for her that I don't care much about that she buys for herself. It's a give and a take. She likes cake and I like ice cream. I actually wanted her to have an iPhone 4 so we could talk over face time because I travel. She said no thank you, your old one will work just fine. She can have anything she wants, within reason of course.

The only way to use it as an iPod without service is to unlock, and it would not be a working GPS without service

The iPod has nothing to do with service. You don't need the internet to listen your music library, which, by the way, is downloaded through iTunes. GPS does need cell service, but it can also use satellite while you're in WIFI only.

I still use my 2G as an ipod for the kids, gave mom my 3G, will keep 3GS as backup/ipod for now. I figure as long as I have a b/u, my phone will never break!

Not true, you don't need to unlock, heck, you don't even need to jailbreak, just activate the phone with the old SIM card. There is even an article on Apple.com on how to. Second, ever heard of Navigon? TomTom? The 3GS makes an excellent standalone GPS, honestly, its a better deal than any standalone unit. Those apps work perfectly without any kind of Data connection. Might want to check some facts before you go off sounding so confident.

In other news, this is exactly what I plan to do with mine. Plug it into the Sync system on my car and throw it in my iPhone window mount. :) My 3G I might give to my mom in exchange for my 2G back, which I can put back in the box, that phone has had a long life. Lol. I was going to give my GF the 3GS, but she just opted for the iPhone 4, something I am excited for. Haha. "Facetime"

Read above, GPS needs no such thing, it doesn't even need WiFi, now A-GPS does, but the iPhone knows exactly where it is without any data connection.

my wife is blind and she is thrilled to get the 3gs. it is only 2 months old. only the cost of a lower data plan made it possible. She has been wanting a talking phone for a long time. but the speech software was over 300.00 and only worked with phones that were not practical for her.

as an ipod

I'll probably use it with the AV connection kit to watch video content from iTunes on my TV, since I do not have an Apple TV.

Mine is too beat up to sell, from dropping it to banging it on the dashboard to try to get service... it has been put through the ringer!

I had a similar experience. No cell service = no Google Maps and therefore no GPS.

A built in map setup would be the only way to 'utilize' the GPS hardware outside of cell service.

My 3GS is going to my sister and the 3G that I gave her last time will be returning to me to use for my music in the car.

When I get my iPhone 4 on Thursday, my iPhone 3GS will go to my wife, as she is just starting to get fed-up with the slowness of my hand-me-down 3G she got last year... I think I'll give the old 3G to my sister for her first iPhone!

I was just wondering what everyone else will be doing with their 3GS come 6/24

I will be giving mine to my son to use as an iPod Touch as his 8GB Touch has a weird screen issue and no insurance, my iPhone 3G is in perfect condition and is 16GB, so he will welcome the upgrade.

Well yea of course you don't need service to listen to music, I was just under the impression that without service, your phone is locked... because I've seen it happen.. unless you dont ever update it after its been activated

MP3 Player for my car, I use it now when I plug the phone in but I am looking forward to it just sitting in there permanently

if only ATT/APPLE unlocks them

so many nice iPhones can be used by the new owners...

i usually i do not sell my stuff to others; pass it to my siblings.

this time i might unlock it and use it with T-mobile unlimited talk time.

Currently i have cricket phone as home phone - unlimited talk time for about $40.

pay t-mobile for $50 for unlimited and keep the cool iPhone 3G as home phone. cricket phones usually not so nice.

I don't get why so many men give their wives their old phones they don't want anymore. Why doesn't she get a new phone and you get her hand-me-down?

What about the wives who don't *allow* their husbands to buy the new iPhone. Or at the least, have big arguments about it?

Yea exactly.. like sexism has any real relevance here. Most of the problems I see personally are wives who control their husbands.. not the other way around. Not saying it doesn't happen, but most of the time, it's the controlling self-righteous woman dominating the man...

I on the other hand have an excellent wife!

I sold my 32GB 3GS on Gazelle.com. Fortunately I requested a quote the day of the iPhone 4 announcement on June 7 and was quoted $305. I figured this could be a best case scenario and planned to sell it on eBay. Thankfully I still have the quote because the market seems to be flooded with iPhones and the prices aren't as high as they used to be on eBay. After I pay commission to eBay and paypal fees I don't think I would make more money than my original offer of $305. Needless to say I'm sticking with my original quote from Gazelle.
