Going in my car as MP3 player. Sucks that I can't use it for pandora when there will be no service. They should at least let me keep my 3GS active on there for a small fee. Probally around the same price to use Sirrus or something like that.

Talking about wives getting the hand me downs. My wife has the first gen and she is content on keeping it cause she never uses the phone to the full potential, so she thinks its perfectly fine.

Funny store is though that when they first came out, i wanted one so bad I could kill a man. Then one day she comes strolling home after hanging out with her parents, with a iphone in hand.....

I almost divorced her that day.... lol :)

Now she is sitting across from me on the hospital bed, waiting to have my first son. Hope im allowed to sneek out to the apple store on thursday ;)

No she is sitting across from me right now on the hospital bed, waiting to have my first son. Hope im allowed to sneek out to the apple store on thursday ;)

Congratulations!!!!

Usually I sell them on Criagslist and it pays for my upgrade. This time though my mom wants it. So, I'm giving it to her and putting her on my plan.

I had a similar experience. No cell service = no Google Maps and therefore no GPS.

The iPhone 3GS GPS will work just fine without Google Maps or cell service. On a 3GS, the Compass app will give you your GPS latitude and longitude. It may take 5 or 10 minutes to lock on to satellites without cell service, maybe faster if you start out connected via wifi, but then you can move away from any wifi connection and the GPS will stay locked on.

Or you can use an app with built in maps.

Not true, you don't need to unlock, heck, you don't even need to jailbreak, just activate the phone with the old SIM card. There is even an article on Apple.com on how to. Second, ever heard of Navigon? TomTom? The 3GS makes an excellent standalone GPS, honestly, its a better deal than any standalone unit. Those apps work perfectly without any kind of Data connection. Might want to check some facts before you go off sounding so confident.

In other news, this is exactly what I plan to do with mine. Plug it into the Sync system on my car and throw it in my iPhone window mount. :) My 3G I might give to my mom in exchange for my 2G back, which I can put back in the box, that phone has had a long life. Lol. I was going to give my GF the 3GS, but she just opted for the iPhone 4, something I am excited for. Haha. "Facetime"

Read above, GPS needs no such thing, it doesn't even need WiFi, now A-GPS does, but the iPhone knows exactly where it is without any data connection.

You're exactly right. I was reading this thread and another one at the same time. But I'm still confident. I just screwed this response up. Thanks for correcting me.

Well yea of course you don't need service to listen to music, I was just under the impression that without service, your phone is locked... because I've seen it happen.. unless you dont ever update it after its been activated

Your phone won't be locked. I have all four models and use each of the previous as an iPod. No need to sell them, so I add them in with all of my iPod models. I wasn't trying to be cruel or rude. I was only saying it is safe to use without service. Sorry for the mixup.

I'm looking at my 2 year old 3G, and it's in amazing condition. Not a scratch and I never bought one of those ugly cases. I use the ambiance app a lot to sleep, so I'll probably just keep it in my room next to my bed.

Traded 3GS

I traded my 3GS for broncos football tickets and the use of my brother's upgrade to get my iPhone 4.
