I try not to give negative reviews - at any given time, there are so many mediocre artists. Why bother? In a few years, they will all be forgotten. More interesting to consider is what music will still be listened to 100 years from now? 200 years?

Slam Dunk....

1) Worst artist - Madonna (single handedly started "ho pop")
2) Worst song - "We Built This City" by Jefferson Starship (video features their ChuckECheese lookalike lead singer)
:p

Literally anything on any radio station except my local rock station (who happens to play a decent song maybe once an hour). Also 95% of the current iTunes top 100 songs.

I have mixed feelings on Madonna. Some of her earlier club-oriented stuff is OK, especially when incorporated into DJ mix sets. She's been struggling to keep relevant since the backlash of negative publicity during the "Erotica" era and the onset of younger artists like Britney Spears, but has occasional flashes of her younger self ("Ray Of Light").

Starship's "We Built This City"... uy. I'm inclined to agree with you here; this was the nadir of corporate rock, and definitely belongs in the Bottom 10 of bad songs, along with "Ice Ice Baby" and Milli Vanilli's "Baby Don't Forget My Number".

We Built This City? That's a cult! :p I mean it's so cheesy that it's actually good. Now crucify me. :D

I think what disappoints so many people about this is that it was recorded by what was a well-respected rock band.

Statements like "So bad it's good" are really subjective. Then again, opinions by their very nature are subjective, and that's what we are expressing here, so I have no problem with yours.

I still can't believe that Kesha is a real Popstar. The tinfoil hat part of me kind of thinks the record companies are just experimenting to see how stupid the human race really is. Same with Lil Wayne. Those two are the epitome of untalented dog crap.

I really hate hip-hop/rap, I mean, I think it's degrading society and a negative influence. People think they sound so bad-ass speaking in slang/improper English... wtf? :(

I suppose it would be better if rap and hip-hop artists spoke like "everyone else" and pretended the world was as peachy as it *really* is for "everyone else"?

The World is what you make of it.

Rap and hip-hop "artists" pander to the malcontents in Society.

In the old Navy axiom, Shape-up, or ship-out!!!

Well, Kesha's (Kes$ha, how stoopid does that look?) singing may not be the best and she might be the weirdest person on earth, but shes shown the world that if all else fails, she'll be a porn star and that she is not scared of the semen. Such a great role model for young persons everywhere; much like Paris Hilton, Miley Cyrus, and Lindsey Lohan. I hope my kids grow up to be just like them (whom I would immediately disown if I survived the stroke)

Anything that sounds like Information Society back in the 80's.

Ohhh... the entire Free Style genre, the most retarded music ever, fallowed by what ever is on the radio here in Miami.

First of all, they shouldn't be recognized as "artists", they should be known as entertainers or clowns. They dress themselves with outrageous rags, and only "rap/sing" about complete idiotic ideas or events.

Second, yes, they should speak like a normal person would, but I understand this isn't possible as most hip hop/rap "artists" speak in African American Vernacular English or Ebonics. I am aware that there are some white rappers that speak in the same dialect.

Third, most real artists don't sing about the world being "peachy". I don't know what you are talking about...

Have a good day :)

I don't like 30!H3 or however it's spelt.

I can stand Katy Perry or Ke$ha for a while if it's on the radio or I can't help listening to it in the shop or something, but not Bieber or most of the other stuff in the charts. I wouldn't even pirate that stuff it's so bad.

Pretty much anything that's in the charts nowadays. It all sounds like autotuned *****.

Oh yeah, I agree. Not all new music sounds like that crap though. Mostly just the really popular stuff is all in the same key and are essentially the same songs underneath.

The song Brown Skin by India Arie is the worst for me. I heard it while riding a bus around in Kuwait and its so terrible that people on the bus were begging the driver to change the station. Its just a plain terrible song.

Other honorable mentions are anything by Owl City (seriously the guy does nothing but fluctuate his voice, sing about dumb **** and add autotune. ) Maroon 5 (they are horrible), Ke$ha (wtf is she???), Jibbs (or most other rap for that matter), and country songs with crappy lyrics.

The female singer for Far East Movement (her name is Dev) has her own song out, "Booty Bounce". She was allowed to use the "Fly Like A G6" chorus in her song too. If you're wondering what it sounds like, I'll spare you the trouble: She's trying way too hard to be Ke$ha.

Fans of old-school Black Eyed Peas, you might as well give it up. BEP are now a pop group with occasional hip-hop influence. "The Time (The Dirty Bit)" signifies the completion of the switchover. I have no problem with it, myself; many popular artists reinvent their styles over time. Dizzee Rascal started out as an underground/"grime" artist; he's mainstream now. Apoptygma Berzerk started as a Goth/Industrial act, changed to Futurepop, then ditched most of the synths and adopted a guitar-driven Emo-ish tone.

As far as synthesizer poop goes, well, I happen to like a bit of it, being a synth player/programmer myself. I'll actually listen to a couple of these throwaway pop songs just because of the synth sounds used in the music track. I used to love Stock Aitken Waterman productions in the 80s; their orchestrations were nicely arranged and mixed very well.

you got good taste in my opinion but dev isn't the female singer of far east movement. The far east movement is all guys. she was just featured in one of there songs. but she sucks. seriously.

If you looked more into rap music, its history and some real rappers, (not fake pop rap that itunes labels as hip hop) then I think you would realize that they are not "clowns" and some rappers are AMAZING lyricists and can come up with some of the best, most thought out lyrics ever. Listen to some 2pac, the song changes.

Kanye does some really dumb things but I appreciate his music. I cannot deny his talent in that realm. No one's put out an album like MBDTF in hip-hop. Closest person I can think of is KiD Cudi. Two sonically refreshing albums this year from the GOOD music camp.

Finally someone admits a rapper has TALENT! because not all do but the real rappers do. I generally don't like a lot of lil wayne but search lil wayne freestyle. Hes thinkin up all these lyrics as he goes.

You're technically correct. Dev was only a "featured" singer for "Fly Like A G6." My guess is, though, that Dev will still make appearances on Far East Movement singles in the future, since "...G6" was a semi-hit.

Oh, and to the vj, I respectfully disagree on Information Society, although I will admit that Kurt is not the best vocalist in the world. InSoc rode the line between freestyle and synthpop. Their first hit "Running" got played in a lot of Miami clubs circa 1984, to the complete surprise of the band at the time; they were aiming for more of an alt-dance/New Wave vibe. Later InSoc material like "What's On Your Mind (Pure Energy)" and "Think" is more along the lines of what I call the Golden Age Of Synthpop. Other Golden Age bands were Red Flag, Cause & Effect, Depeche Mode's Music for the Masses-era singles like "Strangelove", Pet Shop Boys, Anything Box, and selected Erasure and Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark material.

(Disclaimer: I am a big Synthpop fan, both of the Golden Age and what is called the Modern Synthpop scene.)

I do agree with you on Miami freestyle, though; I don't care much for it, save one or two "classic" hits like Company B's "Fascinated" and a small-time band called Paris By Air that blends freestyle and Garage-style house. The rest is very, very formulaic, even for 80's house music.

I love rap. There are more good ones than the rappers that get spotlight on the radio. You just have to be willing to search. I grew up on it. It's a significant part of my life.

I can tolerate a bit of hip hop, as long as the music production is good and/or truly original (e.g. Mantronix, earlier Timbaland), and the rapper(s) have a good flow that is their own (e.g. Busta Rhymes, Eminem), and not just trying to cash in on a trend (virtually every Dirty South artist except for Ludacris). I also give an extra listen to those artists who try to get people thinking about social or political issues, like Public Enemy.

For an old-school example: I like Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five's "It's Nasty" better than Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight". Although "Rapper's Delight" is better known and got more airplay, the rhyme skills and "flow" is IMHO better on "It's Nasty."
