I have always named all of my Macs, going back 15 years. It makes it easier to identify the machines when networking and it gives them some personality. I've used "Tempest", "Mozart", "Amadeus", "Leonardo", and my new MacBook is "Galileo", a reference to the shuttle craft from Star Trek TOS (because of it's portability, etc...). I also name any external hard drives as well.

You have to name it _something_. How else would you know what computer is what on the network!

Mine's called "Andrew's MacBook" at the moment - right out of the box! Still thinking of a name.. although it's bound to be something dumb like stormy (my powermac) or coaly (my old black book) :p

I love seeing people's full names as their computer names in public wifi networks ;)

Yes, for network host name purposes.

Current MacBook is Odin. Wife's is Hera. Our Mac mini media server is named Chronos. Previously used favorites for various machines (Mac or otherwise) are Loki, Neo, Morpheus, Nemesis, Marina, Pindar, Hume, and Knuth.

Haha. Are you both mythology majors or something?

Heheh. Actually I'm a math professor and she's a financial specialist for an insurance company. But my first degree was in classical literature (Greek emphasis), which explains some of those names (as well as my screen name), and the same interests led me into Norse mythology and modern philosophy, which rounds out the list. :)

yes... I name my macbooks, my mouse, the printer, the desktop... they all have names.... most were given by the factory. :D

How many people who think naming their Macbook is silly: 1) Fret when it gets a tiny scratch; 2) Buy it accessories; 3) Secretly beam when they pull out their new aluminum Macbook in public for the first time; 4) Obsess over charge-discharge cycles?

I tend not to anthropromorphize things (well, except for the cat) but investing your ego in an object is simply another form of projection.

how do i change it so that it doesn't say Aris's Macbook on a wifi/bluetooth/etc. network..........cause it doesnt really say mclovin's macbook, but i'd love it to!

Anything that needs to be addressable on the network gets named after a character from ThunderCats. So far I'm up to about 5: Lion-O (MacBook), Tygra (Mac mini), Snarf (iBook G4), Cheetara (Wireless N Network), Cat's Lair (Airport Extreme). There was previously a Jaga (PowerMac G4), but that was given to my parents. Other devices also got the names to fit in with the rest - the iPod touch is called WilyKat and my phone is called Panthro.

I've also built two custom gaming rigs for friends, which were christened Mumm-Ra and Slythe.

Much as I agree it's a silly and very, very tragically geeky thing to do, I just hate having things called "So-and-so's such-and-such", and so I went with a naming system that at least amused me.

I have always named my systems, too, because 1) I hate generic names (Bob's Macbook, or worse, PC's that use the serial/model number) and 2) it makes it MUCH EASIER to navigate to them on the network. I personally use Old Testament Bible names, mostly because they're strange (not all are) and abundant. I currently have Japheth (my Mini), Chloe (my wife's Macbook, and actually a New Testament name, but she likes it), and Enoch (my PC). And for the one who asked how to do it, go under System Preferences, click on Sharing, and the box at the top says "Computer Name" - type in whatever you want it to show up as. And have fun with it! :D

Hah... me too! I use various greek/roman gods and goddesses on all my networks (home and work).
