I haven't decided yet if I will buy it, because I don't need it. If I buy it then it will be for the following reasons:
  • Reading
  • Social networks
  • a bit of gaming
  • movies
  • because I love gadgets and the ipad is a great gadget

I've decided I'd like the cellular option on my iPad mini after all. Right now I still have unlimited data plan on my iPhone so I can't make a hotspot for my other gear. Getting the cellular option on a middle-of-road (32GB) iPad mini upgrade seems like a reasonable alternative. Plus, who knew I'd like retina display so much. I didn't think it would make that much difference, but it does.

A kid down the road can hardly wait to inherit my original iPad mini, so it's not like the old gear will be lying around gathering dust. :)

Maybe this is a stupid reason, but I prefer the Mini/Air design to the ipad 4, and even though I only got it last year I am almost certainly going to update to the Air.

Absolutely no valid reason. I just want it.

haha same applies to me as well!
Although i like to do occasional gaming like asphalt 8 or dead trigger 2 on my ipad 2, and also do occasional reading sort of thing :D

So basically we like the iPad because it is a nice toy. If the iPad didn't exist we wouldn't really care...

Obviously all of the reasons that the OP proposed would be a valid reason for some. Why do people buy anything? When a new release comes out, it will of course, run software a little bit faster or look better (ie retina display). For me, it's basically all of the above as I'm going from the last gen mini...

iPad 2 is getting old. I'll hand the 2 off to the misses, instead of sharing, and move to something that I know is future proof for a LONG time(64 bit)

I'm planning on using it for apps, videos, music, surfing the web, and school work. I love my iPhone, but I want a bigger screen, so I'm going to get an iPad Air. I already have a Nexus 7, but I can't stand it, so I don't use it, and I'm looking to replace it with something better that I'll actually use.

What's wrong with the N7?

It lags, and it basically just runs giant phone apps. I also had to get it replaced twice for issues with the speaker and mic, and the 3rd one has a power button issue. That definitely doesn't help. I tried to like it, but after a while I just couldn't stand it mostly due to the lag.

Surf the web. Read and post on forums. Let my son play games on it. Use it while I chill and watch TV in bed. Use the NBA app and follow stats and games while I watch my home team the Miami Heat go for the 3 peat. My iPad mostly stays at home. Its only for home use. Everything is better on a bigger screen when at home :) My wife uses it. I use it. My son uses. I do a lot of emailing viewing from it to. Order stuff. Use it for work related purposes to show my customers pictures. I'm a general contractor.

Sounds just like desktop replacement :)

Sounds just like desktop replacement :)

This has been discussed a thousand times. While the iPad is a great device, is by no means a desktop replacement, and will never be mainly because of its form factor and limited OS.
That doesn't mean though that it won't become more capable with each generation, and I can see it being a desktop replacement for people that never really needed a computer in the first place. Everybody else will still want to have a proper computer.

For general couch use and surfing the web, movies in bed, entertainment on a plane, etc. I've never owned an iPad so I'm not upgrading from anything.

I agree with you. I just meant that it sounds like this guy would not have much use for a desktop. Like you say, for some people, iPad can serve ALL needs from a computing standpoint.

- More portable than my laptop
- Watching Netflix
- Retina Display
- Playing the occasional game
- Web browsing
- Watch MLB games

My 3rd gen iPad running iOS 6 is slow. It also takes forever to charge. And it's too heavy. I use it a lot for reading so I want something that's super light. And being super thin is a bonus too because I can just shove it in my handbag and it doesn't take up a lot of space.
