Thankfully, my 17" iMac G4 is still pluggin' along. I'll keep this machine for as long as I possibly can, simply for the kicka** form factor.

I've always wanted a G4 Cube, and a TAM.

My 17 is also still in good shape, only for email these days!

Got a Cube and a TAM!

I always had slow, old macs. I loved them (especially my iMac g4) but they were a bit to old to use as a main computer. I still have all of them though. I even have 2 iMac g4's (!) but one of them has a burned motherboard. Kind of a luxury problem if you read how many people want an iMac g4.

Because of all my slow mac's I always wanted one of the newest iMac's. Just because they look really nice, are really fast compared to my mac's and have big screen. ;) And if I ever get a fast new iMac, I would love to have a maxed out g4 Cube as a secondary machine. They just look so awesome. :)

Well your just not imaginative... If you use old software old machines are fine, Photoshop 7, InDesign 1.5 etc are all still perfectly good for some people.
Very true, and this has always been my mantra.

I use PS 7 on my Pismo, and it runs just fine. Old versions of FCP are pretty solid and quite speedy on vintage machines. Lack of a current, supported browser is by far the worst thing about running older OS units.

I have them. :p

Back in the day, I sure did love the the Pismo PowerBook. I kept that thing going for years. Such a marvelously well made and attractive laptop for its time (along with its similar predecessors).

I had a Centris 610 which I also loved. Turned that thing into a frankenputer. Upgraded all that could be upgraded and even hacked an optical drive into that thing. It still works today.

Exactly. This is why it took until Final Cut Pro 7 (Studio 3) before I upgraded from a stable FCP1 rig, although if I went back I would miss Motion and Soundtrack Pro (Another product I have v1 of on my PowerBook G4).

A boss of mine at a part-time help desk job once surprised me when I learned that he used FCP1 on a G4 tower for all his professional jobs: like, legit commercial production work. This was in '09.

It's frustrating to see perfectly good machines get tossed to the side for the "latest and greatest." If you look in my sig, you'll see I have quite a few PPC units, all of which still see regular use. The Pismo is a rugged, durable, and highly practical portable, with its dual swappable bays and comfortable screen size.

Lucky!

And yeah, the iMac G4 now a days is reduced to iTunes and e-mail, maybe some word processing (with AppleWorks, of course!).

I had to move my tunes to my Mac Mini as I ran out of space, 80gb seemed such a big hard drive back in the day! Can't get rid of it as it's the best iMac design in my opinion.

The Cube is running at 1.84mhz so is pretty useful still and the TAM is a G3 500. Both bought from the same guy already upgraded.

Yeah, my 80GB has around 20GBs free... I've thought about replacing it with something larger, and maybe even upgrade the optical.

What do you use the TAM for?

I cant remember where, but if you look in I believe the Mac Mini forum (or Mroogle it) someone managed to get a Mac Mini inside a G4 iMac, and used the built-in monitor, so somewhere floating about there is a pin-out for that screen and instructions on how to in effect make it a monitor :D
How ironic cause I just sold my 2009 Mac Mini for a 2010 MacBook Pro.

I, like many others, wanted an iMac G4. Just today I read on the Apple Blog that the iMac G4 was a misstep.

Another notable Mac failure was the iMac G4. Introduced in 2002, the iMac G4 boasted a revolutionary design that placed an LCD display on an articulating arm, the “sunflower” design, as Jobs described it. “Why have a flat display if you’re going to glom all this stuff on its back?” Two years later, following a reception best described as lukewarm, that’s exactly what Apple did with the iMac G5.

I disagree. I recall hitting refresh on my iMac G3 during the keynote waiting for the picture to show on Apple's website for confirmation, even though Time spoiled the surprise.

I spent years wanting for a 17" macbook with 2x 500GB 7200rpm drives, and since I had to save, figured with one of the future (at the time) i7 processors off the intel processor roadmap.

Here I am, typing on it! Took a few years to get here, but am now quite happy with my first real (not hackintosh) mac. :D

Now I just dream of being able to get one or two 1TB SSDs for any sensible money (like £150 each), but I think that'll take longer since a 500GB is currently >£1k.

Any Intel based Mac right now would be a big step up. I may be getting a 17" CD iMac from craigslist soon. It's maxed out with 2GB of RAM and has Snow Leopard on it.

From my experience of a 17" CD Mac under 10.6 - Id recommend getting a C2D model if there is any way you can afford it (Mine, as in my sig is a 1.83CD... cant run Final Cut Pro well thats for sure..)

Jobs looks so young on the Times cover there.

Let's face it, all iMac designs have been pretty revolutionary, at least up until the G5 form factor. While the pace of innovation has slowed somewhat, Ives is still refining the details with each update.

I have always wanted a Mac Pro with 12 cores. I do a lot of video editing. Which means that I need a lot more power. I may also be one of the few people who like to have the CPU unit separate. I am extremely OCD. I like to have a lot of empty space on my desk. Clean desks are good desks. Some of my other hobbies are using AutoCad, Google Sketchup, and other high-powered applications. Having the money for a 12 core Mac Pro would be awesome.

1) If you need a 12-core Mac Pro, you should be able to afford one. ie. If your an amazing video editor - you should be able to afford a 12-core. (Im a video editor and my Quad Core is plenty for me - what on earth would you need 12 cores for, Final Cut can barely take advantage of 4)
2) You cant've always wanted one as they only came out about 9 months ago.
3) You don't need a Mac Pro. You need a grammar book on conjoining sentences.
4) Google Sketchup is not a high-powered application, Sketchup Pro could be, but it should still work okay on a iMac. AutoCAD can be, but I doubt what your using it for is so high-powered just judging by your grammar and tone.

Does that mean you're only 1/3 amazing?

Cant've isn't a proper word. Should be can't have.

'your an amazing video editor' is incorrect. You need an apostrophe as it's a shortened form of you are - so 'you're'. Your is the possessive, which I don't think you wanted to use in this context.

It's usually considered bad form to be a forum grammar-Nazi.

PowerBook G4 and I'm buying a 12" PB 1.5Ghz Tomorrow. Super stoked!

That's awesome. I loved those 12" PowerBooks. I still see people using them every once in a while.....at Starbucks, of course.:p

I wish I still had my Macintosh Classic II.....

I'm at a point now where I'm actually perfectly satisfied with my MBP that I've owned for over a year. It still seems brand new to me. However, I've been thinking about getting an iMac for a little while now, and may consider it in a few months.
