The resolution of the 15" with HR screen is so high, I don't think going to the 17" MBP gets you much more resolution.....or at least not enough to justify the gain in size and weight.

1680x1050=1,764,000 pixels

1920x1200=2,304,000 pixels

30.6% more pixels on the 17" than on the HR 15". Pretty decent difference.

Ah thanks for the reply guys/girls!! Really appreciate the help.. As soon as I decide to get my a** out of bed I'll be headin in to town and seeing the diff between the two in size, I would be gettin a back pack for it and don't really need to worry abt books as I mainly use PDFs - this brings me on to another issue I think I may face...I'm still learning and going through tutorials on many programs and currently with my 24" dell pc screen I can have 2 windows open side by side (firefox & Photoshop for example) this allows me to view the tutorial and use Photoshop side by side with having to flick back n forth between windows.. I feel that this could be a pain for me on a smaller screen??? Can any one post a screen shot on their 15 / 17 of them doin this??

Anyone know of any accessories that would allow one to "permanently" affix an external harddrive to the mac without sacrificing the optical drive, maybe stick it on the cover or something? SSD sizes aren't very big at the moment and it seems like a pain to have to pull out an external hard drive everytime I wanted to listen to some music, etc.
Get one of the hard cases for your laptop and put velcro on the back of your hard drive and on the lid near your inputs. Problem solved and you're not stuck with it permanently attached.

Photoshop opens up full screen everytime but you can pull your actual image to the side to look at a webpage.

I have the 15" non-High Resolution Glossy screen and I love it. It fits perfectly on my lap, which is where I use it most of the time.

Check out my screen shot of me having Photoshop open with a sample webpage in the background:

Excellent, and that's with the non high res screen ? think this screen shot may have persuaded me towards the 15" with a high res screen ..

Here are two windows snapped in OSx using BetterTouchTool, 15" HR-AG.

That does look good, here's how that looks on my PC screen, could sacrifice the small amount of space that looks to be what I will be missing out on on the 15" Hi-res screen

How do u find the speed of Photoshop when using large images? Do you notice any lag at all when zoomed in and moving around the image? (When using a large reso picture)

I find Photoshop using high res images to be very smooth. I honestly don't notice any lag except when I'm applying some really CPU-intensive filters.

By no means does my machine create frustration and I have the same one you are looking to buy (albeit the non-HR screen).

I have played around with settings in Photoshop to really optimize it. When you do decide to buy I can put together a screenshot of my settings for you.

The Mac Pro guys have a thread where they use a standardized benchmark for Photoshop and I rank very well with all of them except for the newest model that have the 12-cores and the 2.99GHz processors.

Here a screenshot from my 15" HR AG MBP running Photoshop CS5 if this helps you any.

Valid point .. didn't get a chance to go to PCWorld/iStore over the weekend unfourtuntley but still need to see if I could survive with a 15" or if I should just go for the 17" ...

Actually that image belongs to Joshua Ellingson. Just used it for an example of the screen size. But you can always look at my photography!

some amazing photo's. I recently started an interest in photography and have a good little cheap SLR that I took to Thailand, got some nice shots but wish I could afford a bigger/better camera .. will update my profile on here with my new sites soon :)

I have zero problems working on a 13" for everything the OP mentioned, although I'm in the field 50 percent of the time (in rural Asia) where a 15 inch is just way too much to lug around with all my other gear. Actually, I really wish Apple could reduce the 13" to an 11" :eek:

Agree though, that for desktop work, a 15 inch can be nice. If you're serious about video pick up a big monitor - much cheaper than an overpriced 17".

Finally got down to PCWorld last night and had a look at the 15" & 17", unluckily they didn't have the new i7 17" but I'm assuming the C2D 17" & the i7 17" are the same size and weight?

Can anyone confirm this?

If they are, then I think I'm sold on the 17" :D

As soon as you pu the 2 together the 17" just shined and screamed out at me. The screen space you get and the size seems perfect for me. The laptops OS they had there was all over the place so I couldn't actually use many progams but I could see my self using Photoshop and another program perfectly..

Now the next question I have is, what's the best network hard drive to use and will a terbyte actually fit - I've read so many posts with people saying they are running a terbyte and then some people saying it's impossible.. A simple yes or no will do :(

You said you were looking for the best network hard drive and a Time Capsule sounds right up your alley (you can use it to store files and not just backups).

I couldn't say on fitting a terabyte in your laptop though.

They cost way too much though and I see alot of mixed reviews abt them failing after a few weeks, I don't think I could risk loosing all that data and I don't want to back up a back up of a back up - if you get what I mean

Just thought you might appreciate my input here as I also deliberated over the 15" and 17" models for some time.

At work and at home I use a 24" screen (1920x1080 resolution on both), I think I would struggle to go back to a lower resolution so initially my decision was going to boil down to portability of 15" (which I could then connect to monitor) vs all-in-one of 17". I eventually decided that 17" for me, was the correct option as I wanted to move away from the desk otherwise I would have just got an iMac!

In reality, the 17" is no less portable than my old Samsung X20 15". Apart from being slightly larger in dimension my MBP is possibly even lighter, and it's just as thin! Moving around the house is not a problem. One thing to consider into your price is a good bag for transporting/commuting. I have yet to invest in a proper bag, but it is high on my priorities.

I would also recommend the anti-glare option; moving about a lot means varied levels of lighting and the matte screen performs admirably in high-glare scenarios,
