Captain America The Winter Soldier > well, duh. Still my favorite 2014 movie. And now that I own the thing, the causeway sequences are still on repeat. Some of the best fights I've ever seen staged, but I love watching soldiers go hand-to-hand in genre films.

Sundance Channel showed Escape from New York yet again. I am focusing on background characters the last few times and find all these new things and people.

Watched a few minutes of Django Unchained last night and promptly lost interest. Typical for me and Tarantino, despite his constant homages to the exact type of schlock I love, I usually do not like how he reinterprets the material.

Having serious déjà-vu's reading your posts...:D

Tarantino, I see where you're coming from. I can enjoy one view, thinking it's very entertaining, but actually never feel the urge for a second time. Happened to all his latest entries. Only Pulp Fiction is a different case for me, never really gets old.

Do you know Contraband from Fulci, I'm on the brink to get it just because I ran out of his flics.

LOLOLOL. As well you should sir. :p I get stuck on some films/songs. So I watch and/or listen to the same thing for months etc. a time.

I can't rewatch any Tarantino, but that is me.

Oooh! Contraband was psychotic. One of the most sadistic things Fulci ever filmed, beware the iron to the face - ugh. Of course since Fabio Testi was in it, I had to see it. Not one of Lucio's better films, but if you want something different from Fulci's zombie era material (filmed in between Zombi and City of the Living Dead I think), get a cheap copy.

Oooh! Contraband was psychotic.

Stopped reading there. Ordered.

Alongside with House of Clocks (and Only God Forgives, fingers crossed) but don't you dare spoil it for me (again) with one of your 'nice and informative' posts! :p

Just watched Finding Vivian Maier. If you're a photographer or like photography its a must see.

Its basically about this guy who bought a box of negatives at auction for about $380 and finds a treasure. He spends a long time digging deeper into this woman's reclusive and strange life.

Oops, I did spoil something in Contraband, but when Fulci goes full sadism it's difficult to forget it no matter how hard you want to try. I stopped watching his films after 1984's Murder Rock (which was a cheesy, fun giallo.) And I won't see New York Ripper, what little I did watch was a real turn off.

----------

Last night I watched "Rasputin", with professor snape and magneto. Fun movie.

Yeah, that one was good. Snape was in crackling fine form from what I remember.

I recorded this Film Noir on TCM last night.

The Asphalt Jungle (1950)
A major heist goes off as planned, until bad luck and double crosses cause everything to unravel.

Now on to another Film Noir recorded from TCM recently, Gaslight (1944).
Years after her aunt was murdered in her home, a young woman moves back into the house with her new husband. However, he has a secret that he will do anything to protect, even if means driving his wife insane.

Slow Southern Steel - five year old documentary on Southern Sludge metal. Nice to finally see this. Not surprised that Dixie Dave and Erik Larson were the two most eloquent and fun interviewees on this. If you like EyeHateGod, Alabama Thunderpussy (R.I.P.), Rewake (who directed this), Weedeater etc. really worth watching. And for free...

If you love this kind of metal, you'll enjoy this documentary, all the cussing included.

Danger Diabolik: Mario Bava's playful, campy and sexy adaptation of the Diabolik comic. John Phillip Law and Marisa Mell are so gorgeous (and I love his hair.) My second favorite Bava after Black Sunday.

Queens of Evil Nasty little Italian genre film about a hippie and the witches who seduce him. Dark fantasy until the end where it pretty much becomes a horror film for a few moments.

This was a real commentary on how much the Italian status quo hated the counterculture. It's a very unpleasant tweak why conformity can destroy a person.

Shame it never got a proper release outside of Italy and Japan dvd-wise.

The Bloodstained Shadow - Haven't seen this in a long while. It was pretty sloppy in hiding the killer's identity (you could figure it out in the credits!) There were so many clues as to his identity early on I was quite surprised. Still, watching Lino Capolicchio in a giallo is always fun and Venice is a very, very creepy setting. Worth a rental if you like these kinds of films.

Might watch a bit of Salem's Lot now. That scared me as a pre-teen.

Gosh. That plot summary makes me shudder……..it is so, so, so……terminally, and utterly unimaginatively…….clichéd.

Just think of what could have been done with the idea of a visit to Uranus; and, even in 1962, I think that they had some notion of the true conditions which obtained on the planet, not least its odd axis, (odder make up - even in the 60s, the planet was known to have been some sort of 'gas giant') and yet failed to incorporate any of this into what sounds like a…….somewhat banal plot.

Ah, well. I suppose that I have been spoiled by the intelligence and thought put into some of the episodes of Star Trek, even the original series, which had some excellent episodes; and as for Star Trek (Next Generation), well, that ruined forever any enjoyment I might take from lesser forms of science fiction which involve space travel or exploration......

Yeah, its pretty bad alright. I was surprised to see it even had 1.5 stars on the IMDB. But, as I mentioned to LadyX not too long ago, I'm a sucker for these corny 1950's and 1960's sci-fi flicks.

To the contrary though, earlier today I watched a couple of film noir movies I downloaded from the Open Culture Film Noir website.

Borderline (1950)
Fred MacMurray and Claire Trevor are caught in Mexican dope-smuggling ring, fearing each other is involved, but both undercover agents.
Screen Shot 2014-09-07 at 8.23.28 PM.png

Detour (1945)
Chance events trap hitch-hiker Al Roberts in a tightening net of film noir trouble.

Well, I suppose I have some difficulty distinguishing between science fiction and science fact.

By that I mean that I have always been interested in 'science fact', (and absolutely fascinated by the whole idea of the study of the stars, planets, and the wider universe) - and - also very keen on…..intelligent, (as in, at the very least, being cognisant of what has been happening - or what has been discovered - in the particular field so that a movie does not contradict basic known knowledge in pursuit of a…….tiresomely trite - and moronically clichéd - plot; 'sultry women'? Come on guys….…..)…..science fiction.

Of all planets……Uranus……with its odd axis, odder density, strange chemical composition, frigid temperatures……..come on, guys….even in the 60s it was known that this planet was unusually…….lacking in density. As a consequence: It is doubtful that it has a surface as we understand the term, certainly not the sort of surface that 'sultry women' could stroll about on with any degree of ease….

I love the science 'fact' stuff too, much more than these other flicks. I regularly watch 'How the Universe Works' and 'Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman' on the Science Channel as well.

I watch these corny flicks once in a while when I don't want to use my brain. Plus, my lunch today didn't agree me very well, and I uh... Well, its no longer with me and I still feel slightly nauseous, but not too bad considering our friend Shrink. Who, by the way, is getting better, but just sleeping a lot right now.

Actually, I was about to ask after the health of our friend Shrink; I am delighted to hear that he is getting better - he probably does need to sleep a lot. Rest, lots of it, will aid recuperation, and eventual recovery. Bed is the best place to be, nice and warm, under these circumstances.

Sorry to hear that you are also under the weather; in that case, doubtless what you need to see movie-wise is the equivalent of something soothing, which does not offer anything by way of mental stimulation.....
