The Avenging Eagle (1978) again. For a genre movie, it's a great character-centric story that puts the revenge conflict found in most martial arts films into a very complicated and satisfying light. Basically, 13 Eagles / Iron Boat gang member Chik renounces his assassin ways after being healed by the family of his clan's enemies. A mysterious drifter comes to his aid and the two team up to wipe out the Iron Boat gang. Chik and his mysterious friend are connected by the Iron Boat gang but we do not find out how until the end fight. It's a very layered story and told quite well. This is my favorite performance by the late Alexander Fu Sheng (he whom Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung would copy into comedic Kung Fu glory), as Fu plays it serious for most of the film but allows his unique comedic charms to come through just at right moment. Fu had great chemistry with Ti Lung (who won an award for his performance as Chik) and it's all an around engaging movie.

I have to disagree with the bad buzz around the Fantastic Four - - I found it to be a charmingly earnest origin story told whole. It is seriously one of my favorite comic book movies of all time. A well crafted A+.

This movie is the second coming of Ishtar.
Sorry to hear you didn't enjoy it - - there certainly seems to be plenty of people joining you on the hate train this weekend. ;)

However, for those considering giving it a fair chance, here's Devin Faraci's thoughtful review from over at Birth. Movies. Death.

Watching a set of old James Bonds movies; Goldfinger, From Russia With Love, and For Your Eyes Only.

Okay, James Bond is a cliché, and not even a cliché that I much like; moreover, he is of his era, that superficially slick early 60s vibe, and - for that reason, most of the later films, irrespective of who played Bond, are something of an anachronism.

Nevertheless, for all of that, there is a certain je ne sais quoi about the early Bond movies…….

Hehe, you're right, of course. Funny that I'd find violent fascist fantasy a source of entertainment. Hmmm, well I suppose sometimes opposites do, indeed, attract.

I must of been about 13 when I talked my parents into letting me see a JB double feature in the theater, From Russia with Love and Goldfinger. I was in heaven! :) There was some sexuality but back then, even now, it's PG13. ;)

Over the years JB transitioned into a farse reaching a low point with Roger Moore. I remember when XXX made fun of Bond when a guy, presumably a spy, dressed in a tux wanders into a punk concert and is immediately neutralized. Daniel Craig brought him back to being a tough hombre. :)

Take Me Home Tonight (2011) - 3/10

I was expecting maybe near the level of Hot Tub Time Machine. I only got a single laugh from it and it came from Chris Pratt crying. The only eye opener came from Angie Everhart whoring herself out like usual with the star from Balls of Fury. Might be one of the worst comedies I have seen since EuroTrip, and I generally can like awfully bad comedies that are awfully fun to watch like Dirty Work, Half Baked, etc. Even EuroTrip with its horrible Vatican ending wasn't this unfunny. Some of Pauly Shore and Adam Sandler's worst movies are funnier and they are all generally bad. I remember Encino Man and Son In Law being funnier than this. I was expecting alot more since the title is named after an Eddie Money song which I love and an expected killer 80's soundtrack.

What I got mostly out of it was d-bag looking Topher Grace staring into space completely lost with his life and whose only motive was to sleep with his high school crush. That was the entire premise. Getting laid and lying because he felt guilty he works at Suncoast because he is an egghead. Even The Stoned Age (1994) was way funnier than this and made better points with life and that movie was all about getting drunk, stoned, and laid. A script that made Dan Fogler (whom I loved in Fanboys), Anna Faris, and Chris Pratt all generally unfunny and unlikeable deserves to be burned like this film. IMDb rating is over 6 at around The Phantom Menace and Crystal Skull level when it deserves 4 or less since it is far less enjoyable movie to watch than the absolute worst-rated Star Wars and Indiana Jones movie.

Kingdom of Heaven (2005) - 6/10

I liked Troy. It was historically inaccurate but ENTERTAINING enough. What I hated in it was it was poseur fest for Bratt Pitt to look hardcore when Achilles wasn't likeable to begin with. He cared for nobody except his cousin and his lover. Hector (Eric Bana) is the best character in the movie. Another downer is ORLANDO BLOOM. I could tolerate him as Legolas, but in Pirates of the Carribean and these epic flicks, he is annoying as hell. He can wussify any movie.

Ronda Rousey can add more testosterone than this pretty boy wimp. The guy is a joke as Paris and he can't even carry a sword right in KoH. From now on, I will avoid any action/adventure movie starring Orlando Bloom although I did like The Three Musketeers and last two LotR films. Bloom in any of these historical epic war flicks is as bad as casting Kevin Costner as Robin Hood. I haven't been impressed much by KoH and this is the Director's Cut. I probably need to rewatch Gladiator (2000) and Braveheart (1995) for the 8th time to find much more superior and entertaining movies. Even Troy Director's Cut was more entertaining than this.

Avoid Take Me Home Tonight at all cost.

Keep Kingdom of Heaven for production values and if you can tolerate Orlando Bloom long enough to get to the ending...

I have seen maybe 5000+ movies in my life not including porn. When I watch any movie, I need to know in first viewing is if it is going to be rewatchable? Only The Big Lebowski was a movie I regretted buying only to enjoy it more and more after 5+ viewings. Both movies I rated above don't have that replay value for me. Has as much appeal as Michael Cera's personality. Maybe KoH will get better after a few more viewings, but unlikely for TMHT since I generally can't stand d-bags like Topher Grace or Christian Bale in most films they are the protagonist. Yes, that includes the pretentious TDK trilogy and most of Nolan's overrated films that preaches to us where the script is being read from a GREAT QUOTES book. Nolan gets a 10/10 in story and dialogue but 5/10 in pace and art direction. Replay varies from movie to movie. The Prestige is my personal fav Nolan film.

I'm so with you on this one, Huntn. The earlier Bond films seemed grounded in reality and then when Moore took over, they became a fares and all about the gadgets. I was really, really impressed with Skyfall and look forward to the next Bond picture directed again by Sam Mendes. It's too bad Roger Deakins isn't doing the cinematography but the new guy, Hoyte Van Hoytema, did Interstellar and Her, so that's cool. And Thomas Newman is doing the music too. Yay.

I'm looking forward to SPECTRE to! From the 60s, I rank From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, and Thunderball as the top classic Bond films. You Only Live Twice was good, I like the Oriental setting, Diamond Are Forever, the moon buggy chase was "ehh".

So far today, thankfully they've gotten away from the outlandish. :) But I'll take the Disco Volante, the ship that splits, any day, even if it has artificially fast motion, as if we would'nt notice. :D

I watched the Fantastic Four movie this weekend - - I loved it - - sosumi.

My review seems to differ from the majority of reviewers. Is that a good reason to attempt to slander and belittle my opinion?

Honestly, if you liked it good for you. There was just way too much wrong in my opinion that made it a bad movie.

The Convict Killer (1980) is a bridge between period wuxias and modern gun fu crime films. This story about a wrongly imprisoned man seeking the criminal behind his jail time was good. It was written by the same author who penned the novel behind one of my favorite Shaw Brothers films, Life Gamble. Ti Lung was good as the wrongly convicted man, I think he did more hand to hand fu here than I'd seen in any of his previous roles. And Anthony Lau Wing continues to impress me in another rare turn as a good guy; I think Lau had the best role and his flying daggers were pretty neat. There was a nod to the western knife fights of Life Gamble with Lau and a dagger wielding bad guy. There were a lot of things I liked, (the fight styles for Ti and Lau), the constant guessing of character roles, but I would have loved this if it was a straight forward wuxia rather than more modern. I much prefer period martial arts films to modern set ones (there are a few exceptions, of course, but I prefer Ti Lung flying around in a lavish costume and brandishing some kind of sword / pole weapon.)

I'm off to watch The Enchantress (1983) again as I need some whackadoodle visuals to send me off to sleep.

Incorrect - - I gave it a good review here.

...and I've been a member a lot longer than you! ;)

(The more I read about the background to the release of this new version of Fantastic Four, the more I'm leaning towards believing that the avalanche of negativity towards it is part of a conspiracy by fans and media to force Fox to revert it's license on the franchise back to Marvel. I can understand that not every moviegoer will enjoy it as much as I did, but the amount of hate being directed at the film is out of all proportion to it's actual content.)

I'll eventually stream it. The original movie was forgettable. I assume this is a sequel or is it a reboot? It's certainly not sounding good, lol, but I've learned I can't always trust critics.

Quote:
The movie feels like a protracted teaser for a more exciting follow-up that, depending on whether audiences warm to this relatively low-key approach, might never happen.

Much of “Fantastic Four” consists of sullen teenagers bickering and staring at computer screens. I thought that’s what people went to the movies to get away from. Full review

A mixed bag of groundbreaking comic-book visuals, subtle mood shifts, and incomplete storylines that suggest a lack of clarity in the overall vision of the film. Full review

It's not good enough they are exposed to radiation while on a mission in outer space, now it has to be a trip to an alternate universe? ;)

Transported to an alternate universe, four young outsiders gain superhuman powers as they alter their physical form in shocking ways.

Just added this to my Netflix queue, saw it come up in recently released - love me some <SB> :D

Hahaha, got to love the old school label maker labels for the various gadgets in Little Nellie (I so totally dug that whole helicopter sequence when I was a kid)

It's yet another reboot. There was so much turmoil, walk-offs, re-writes, the director flipping out, trashing hotels, and disassociated himself from the picture, I'm not surprised at the single digital RT score.

They (i.e., "them"), just cannot get the FF right, and it's not that hard. Focus on the family unit, go back the original source material, look at how Byrne handled them - and for gods sake, make Doctor Doom a charismatic leader of Latvia, brilliant, a dictator but totally loyal to his country. He's not a mutant, his armor isn't some kind of skin, go read a few FF comics. It's really simple.

In fact, the best FF movie has already been made, it's called The Incredibles :)
