Killer Constable (1980) - very good. Not the among the very best of the best Shaw Brothers in my book, but definitely worth seeing.
Chen Kuan Tai's title character must bring to justice the five people accused of stealing 200 million taels of gold from the royal treasury. Naturally, there's a conspiracy afoot, but you can catch the ringleader of the crime very early in so that kind of ruins the mystery.
That said, there are some beautiful visuals akin to something out of an Argento film (the use of blue and yellow lighting, smoke and some long shots of the dead make me think the director took several cues from Suspiria. Not a bad thing), and Chen Kuan Tai is excellent. This is actually a remake of The Invincible Fist (1969) which I've seen and liked, but really don't remember. So I think I'll rewatch for certain shots and Pai Piao's terrific cameo as a very crafty assassin. Not as bleak as some reviews said (personally I felt any scene that attempted emotion as feeling forced to me); I think Secret Service of the Imperial Court (1984) felt far more personal and heartfelt and took many, many cues from this. Ultimately, Secret Service... is my preferred film.
I'm always glad to see a new Shaw Brothers film so the addiction continues.
