Not a movie (feels like one) but alas, that netflix account I got for finally watching Daredevil paid off big time. Four episodes in and it's hands down one of the best comic adaptions I came along so far. Super gritty but the dialogues are finally (more than) bearable, something that I miss in almost all the popcorn superhero flics. And they got Kingpin right - seems like they had a late Brando (~Apocalypse Now) in mind - awesome!

Still flashed, gotta take a break. :D

I saw Hateful Eight yesterday and would like my 3 hours back. If you have the option, see Creed instead. So much better than I expected. Michael B. Jordan was amazing.

Netflix is dangerous. I discovered Once Upon A Time tv series a few of weeks ago (was never shown here) and started watching ... Didn't realise there was 5 series 20+ episodes !!! ... I've binged my way to series 4 so far :) :)

Yea, I'm curious about that one, read a good thing about his seemingly remarkable performance.

Tarantino: I came to the conclusion that his (latest) pieces are like fastfood for me: entertaining while at it but not lasting one bit with the urge to not fall for it again anytime soon.

Well, that can happen - good for you!?

Not seeing it for me now but who knows. Actually it was quite the contrary: after signing in I scrolled past their content and found next to nothing that genuinely interested me besides Daredevil.

Definitely see Creed if you have a chance. If you're a Rocky fan, it fits well with the original movies. But even if you've never seen 1 Rocky film, the film stands very well on its own. MBJ is a great actor and glad he's getting to do more films that really showcase his talents to a wider audience. The script was well written and Ryan Coogler (Writer/Director) is really coming into his own in Hollywood, he's an excellent storyteller.

As for QT - His body of previous work is so strong that I always give his movies a chance. But I agree his recent films are really lacking in the kind of things we've seen from Tarantino. The only thing that remains is excessive use of the N-word and bloody bloody scenes. It was all gratuitous and none of it played into the story to make it better.

Heaven Can Wait (1978)- Never got into the original movie, but I enjoyed Warren Beatty and the cast in this remake.

Hateship Loveship with Kristen Wiig and Nick Nolte. I did not have any idea what to expect other than it was not a comedy. Based on an award winning short story, this was an interesting take on how relationships are formed and survive. The cruel joke played was over the top, and I was left feeling like the main character was eventually going to get terribly hurt, although the ending leaves it possible that she won't.

The Hateful Eight

The good:

Tarantino is a master of manipulation making the viewer love a character one minute and hating them the next minute. Lots of witty dialog and many quotable moments. Well acted. Gory.

The bad:

A bit like watching a stage play. Why 70mm? Only about 7 shots were of wide vistas, the rest was in a stagecoach and house.

The ugly:

I thought Weinstein wouldn't make any more violent movies?

2 stars, wait for it on video.

The Lady Vanishes.

Quite enjoyable. I wouldn't buy it, though.
Easily my favorite of the early Hitchcock movies, I must have seen it a dozen times over the years.

Thank-you for the reminder of this charming classic - - I just purchased the Criterion Collection Blu-ray and I can't wait to see it again!

Hm. Very interesting.

I have seen many (but not all) of Quentin Tarantino's movies. There seems to be a growing consensus that his (increasing) ego is getting in the way of narrative discipline ensuring that the tight narrative arcs of some of his past movies are sacrificed for clever grandstanding. If so, that is a pity - the Tarantino of Jackie Brown, Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs was a fine filmmaker.

I loved DD! Have you watched JJ yet?

Watched the The Hobbit part 3. Wasn't as bad as everyone was saying IMHO. It was enjoyable.

Nope, will finish DD first. Seems like Netflix offers only S1 over here sadly.

Hobbit3 was the one I enjoyed the least of the trilogy. But haven't really embraced all the Tolkien movies to begin with and it was the one that came the nearest to LotR (although they all do).

DD and JJ currenlly only have one season.

I have actually liked all of the movies so far. There have been parts that were slow or had the WTF moments, but over all I was pleased with them.

DD and JJ currenlly only have one season.

Beat me to it, they both only have one season right now.... Season two of DD should be showing up soon.

Ah, alright. Saw it mentioned in the ads so thought we're just a little late on that as usual.

Cheers, have fun tonight! :D

100% right.

Nobody writes better comic dialogue than Tarantino, but he's lost his way with the big picture. The Hateful Eight has the most indulgent narrative of 2015. Take an hour off this puppy, skip the timeslip, and this could have been one of his best.

I thought Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill Vol 1&2, and Inglorious Bastards were intriguing, PF actually was pretty good, I'm not that big on alternate history unless it's presented for intrigue, not just an excuse to tell a story, and I don't own any ot them, the true mark of worthiness. ;)

My sense is that he has become increasingly self-indulgent as a film-maker and the discipline and narrative control that used to be his hallmark are less in evidence.

Thus, the comic - and clever and sharp - dialogue - which used to be a wonderful counterpoint to a tense narrative - has been elevated at the cost of the tight narrative structure at which he used to excel. Moreover, I also get the sense that he increasingly revels in violence for the sake of violence, rather than as a sort of operatic counterpoint to other elements of his plot and story.

Imho, he peaked right out of the gate with Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction - - both masterpieces.

None of his other work has come close to them, but even a mediocre Quentin Tarantino movie is better than 95% of the dross that passes for feature films these days.
