I just watched "Weiner," a documentary about his run for New York mayor. Interesting, but not particularly brilliant. I can't believe there's Oscar buzz surrounding it

My impression that Academy Awards for Documentaries are mostly based on narrative and the weaving of , visual elements, along with a compelling story to tell. Two that stand out are Planet Earth, and The Civil War. Although I've not watched it, it seems this might be another sad story of a person who let sex get the better of them.

It has some things in its favor:
  • It's a Netflix original
  • it's about time travel
So hopefully it'll be able to overcome:
  • Its low rating
  • Its sort of goofy trailer

Yeah, it probably will depend on the competition. But it does seem like the high viz documentaries usually win.

This was filmed with the full cooperation of Weiner. He actually believed that he had a chance at getting elected mayor of New York City. I believe this was supposed to be a film record of his great triumphant return. It was fascinating to watch Huma's body language as the (second) scandal developed.

Come Drink with Me (1966) I'd seen this some years ago and honestly didn't remember much. Coming back to it now it's a very interesting transition piece for Shaw Brothers. Moving away from their opera-centric stories to more wuxia and martial arts. Dancer Chieng Pei Pei is Golden Swallow, a young sword maiden determined to rescue her brother from the bad guys. Crossing paths with Drunk Cat (Yueh Hua), she ultimately succeeds. Drunk Cat is very gentle and coarse with her. Gentle in how he treats her, coarse in his teasing her. These two have a wonderful chemistry (and would work together in several more SB movies). The choreography is more like a a dance than what would come even four years later. And while a lot of the sets and costumes do not have the sophistication of SB works of the 70s, they get the job done nicely.

I liked it more this time.

Today, the first time I saw "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" ("l buono, il brutto, il cattivo") - a surprisingly high-quality movies (for the time). Everything in the film is worthy of respect.

The Kung Fu Instructor (1979) Sun Chung and Ti Lung do Yojimbo for Shaw Brothers with a couple of distinct differences; first Ti Lung's title character is a good, just kung fu master and second the fights are a much needed way to cut through the drama. Some really great moments which also defines our hero too. I was tasked with writing a review simply about the weapons-based fights and it gave me a wonderful new way to look at the title character and the challenges he has to overcome. I'd love this on blu ray.

Great movie. And what a superb soundtrack.

Actually, if truth be told, as I have admitted before now, I am more than rather partial to spaghetti westerns, and - as such - will strongly recommend that you watch the second movie in that trilogy - the timeless classic "For A Few Dollars More".

It's almost Halloween so I'm watching Eraserhead, Pumpkinhead, Dark City, Nosferatu, and The Fearless Vampire Killers.

Nice, we're queuing up several of our favorites, and catching a few new horror flicks.

Trick 'r Treat (2007) made it into our standard Halloween rotation a few years ago, really fun.
[doublepost=1475501977][/doublepost]The Witch (2016), sometimes written as The VVitch

Score: A

Fantastic, creepy, a perfect slow burn with well executed historical detail, terrific performances, outstanding music and sound editing - dark, scary, filled with allegory. A period story of a Puritan family that leaves the safety of their village to live alone in the woods, they encounter some less than natural dark forces ... or maybe not ...

A great slapstick kung fu movie : Drunken Master : Jackie Chan's breakthrough role.
An oddball low budget movie about Oregon hicks/hipsters : Fishing With Gandhi

Drunken master is awesome it really shows the skills of Jackie Chan even at such a young age.

Not exactly a movie but a classic sitcom I found: Bill Cosby Show - Pilot
