I went to see Logan earlier this week and enjoyed the experience. It's definitely not a kid friendly movie. In fact I think there was more language in it than there was in Straight Outta Compton. The theme of Logan aging and dealing with life post the X-Men has been a topic explored regularly in the comics and they did a good job with such in the movie. I really liked how they handled Professor Xavier in the film. It's unclear where Fox goes from here with the X-Men franchise in terms of films. I can't say for sure, but imagine they will treat Logan as a "one off" and will make another ensemble movie that maintains the continuity and characters in the other timeline they have created with First Class, Days of Future Past, and Apocalypse.

There was a trailer for the next Deadpool film. As expected, it was both witty and humorous.

As promised time for something out of this world :) The Thing From Another World (1951) start of the trilogy. A typical film of the era, deviates from the originating short story (who goes there) all the same great yarn in it's own right. One of the best 50's Scifi classics. Great character interaction and a strong story, very much a solid favourite of mine.

More "Things" to come ;)

Although it completely missed the point of the novel, it was an excellent film in the story that it chose to tell. I really enjoy the script.

Kong: Skull Island

Pro: King Kong is awesome, has a personality and somewhat continues the solid ground Peter Jackson set for Kong.

Con: Script is garbage. Effects look OK but mostly eh. Kong is underutilized. Editing is choppy. Tom Hiddleston is badly cast and doesn't look like anyone from the 70s. Feels like it has the same problems as Jurassic World - great animals/dinos but everything else is unsatisfying.

Rent it with a redbox code four months from now if you absolutely must see this movie.

I just want to see it for the monsters. I figured the story would be garbage. I'll take your advice and wait, thanks.

The Girl on the Train (2016)- Murder mystery, tedious and a bit wallowing, about an alcoholic woman, her ex-husband, his new wife, and a missing woman, who used to be the nanny, but it comes together at the end. :)
Good performances by Emily Blunt and cast. Haley Bennett looks like Jenifer Lawrence's sister. :)

Anonymous Heroes (1971) Revisiting an early Shaws team up between director Chang Cheh and his 2nd gen proteges, David Chiang and Ti Lung. The boys are joined the usually lackluster Ching Li as the fiery Pepper as their thieves stieal thousands of rifles and rounds of ammo from the military for the Southern revolutionaries.

It's all pretty breezy and a lot of fun until Chang Cheh decides to be Chang Cheh and starts killing off his heroes. However this one has a rather interesting epilogue (perhaps because of Ching Li's involvement), I almost think of ... well that would be spoiling it.

Chiang and Ti compete for the most likable and charming and Ti steals the movie this time. I love the goofy Bond vibe Shaws were trying to emulate in the ad below.

Much more fun the second time around. I am glad I gave this one another look. Will definitely watch again. :)

yes, this was good and trashy fun. Emily Blunt was a really terrible drunk (in a good way of course! I just wanted to give her a hug).

This movie was excellent. this is the Looney tunes "the movie" i didnt even know this existed. cant believe i found it till now. im a big looney tune fan. im even gonna go out on a limb and say this is even better than Roger rabbit, it has the same vibe where human and cartoons interact. gonna buy it in the future. FYI: there is alot of cameo's as well, like: wwe goldberg, Metaluna Mutant, dr who, the twilight zone guy with the white hair etc...

Sully, which outside of the outstanding plane landing on the hudson and the rescue, was a total bore and underwhelming. For a movie that has the name of the main individual in the title, it is hardly about him. Very disappointing. Tom Hanks has almost nothing to work with. But if you must see the film, the incident is very well done (even though its only 20 minutes at most).

Been on a Lovecraftian binge of recent, too many to burden everyone with the imagery :)

Dagon
In the Mouth of Madness
The whisperer in Darkness
The Mist
Necronomicon

Prince of Darkness

Dagon I very much enjoyed, actually kind of creepy, being an effective adaptation of Lovecraft's The Shadow over Innsmouth. The Mist which is difficult to elaborate on, as it could potentially spoil the viewing experience, enjoyable as such content can be.

In the Mouth of Madness I still struggle to get into, don't know why, doesn't grip me. If I had to pick one in isolation Dagon, watch it, see, and comment :) Ripley Scott's Alien and John Carpenters The Thing also have Lovecraftian influences, which arguably add to the fare...

Possibly more to come, equally getting a little saturated :p

Not just my favorite Shaws, in my top 3 movies of all time now (it's number two.)

I would lose my mind if Arrow or Criterion would release a special edition blu ray. So pleased to own this poster too (Need it have it framed like 99% of my collection.)

Nice site BTW! I love the index of Shaw films with links to a streaming source, found a bunch of things in Amazon Prime (so free!)

I like that you've listed movies that aren't direct adaptations, but very clearly borrow from HPL. Big fan of Lovecraft, including some of his contemporaries/successors who used his mythos like Robert Bloch, Derleth - also a huge fan of Brian Lumley, a modern writer, wrote the very popular Necroscope novels, but his earlier HPL sourced books are super fantastic, I'd highly recommend The Burrowers Beneath and The Transition of Titus Crow.

The Mist is one of my favorites - have you ever watched the B&W release? It was part of a deluxe BD package, pretty amazing.

Oh yeah, you need to add Reanimator and From Beyond to your list :D

Thx, I am planing on watching the B&W release of the Mist as I have yet to see it, equally will likely hold off until back home (traveling on business) as want to see it on the big screen so to speak. Am also holding off on listening to Mountains of Madness on audio book, just want to pick the right time and place. For this one I want to be in a place of solitude with little distraction, as have strong suspicion will be a great experience.

Reanimator and From Beyond i'll watch, just not sure if will be in the near future, Reanimator I saw a good number of years back and am interested in revisiting. From Beyond will be new ground :) The Mist is beautifully executed, very much resonated with me, just WOW tremendously good film.

Another worthy mention Event Horizon again a personal favourite, although I think, less studio interference would have resulted in a far more terrifying experience, not that Event Horizon comes up short in this aspect...
