Nice site BTW! I love the index of Shaw films with links to a streaming source, found a bunch of things in Amazon Prime (so free!)

I like that you've listed movies that aren't direct adaptations, but very clearly borrow from HPL. Big fan of Lovecraft, including some of his contemporaries/successors who used his mythos like Robert Bloch, Derleth - also a huge fan of Brian Lumley, a modern writer, wrote the very popular Necroscope novels, but his earlier HPL sourced books are super fantastic, I'd highly recommend The Burrowers Beneath and The Transition of Titus Crow.

The Mist is one of my favorites - have you ever watched the B&W release? It was part of a deluxe BD package, pretty amazing.

Oh yeah, you need to add Reanimator and From Beyond to your list :D

D.T.,

the Amazon Prime Shaw Brothers are largely English dub only, which is not my preferred language for these. The dub is just about passable for Vengeance! (and a couple of others).

Shaw's publicity handles the official site, I write content for them.

If you want a list of must watch Shaws from Prime, let me know. Vengeance! is at the top of the recommendations list.

Oh HPL...I quite enjoyed the 80s horror films that referenced him including the two you mentioned (both Re-Animator and From Beyond are utterly bonkers in all the right ways.)

thanks for the recommendations btw.

Wow, that is super cool, i.e., your involvement with Shaw. Is that as part of an agency?

I hear you about the dubs, in the past I've been very adamant about the original language tracks, you get the natural inflection, from the original actors, usually so much better at conveying emotion and whatnot - but I've been kind of lazy with lower budget martial arts films - do you speak Chinese?

Side note you'll appreciate: my little G is always pulling some kind of Kung Fu moves (usually from anime), so I did something, said it was Snake style, she was like woah! I said, yeah, you didn't know your Dad was one of the 5 Deadly Venoms - then I showed her a bunch of clips of the aforementioned movie and now she's dying to watch it with me :D

:D Awesome sauce about your little g. Sounds like a fun house to grow up in. Just an FYI Five Venoms has s gory (but fake) torture scene and death by brain pins and such. Shaws -especially those directed by Chang Cheh- get very gory - lots and lots of red paint and slow motion deaths.

I speak Chinese like I do Italian, very little :p but I know the difference between Mandarin and Cantonese. I hope to learn somewhere along the way. As for writing for Shaw Brothers; I won an SB Twitter contest last summer then the U.S. publicity team saw my SB articles elsewhere & asked me to contribute.

Like yourself, I prefer the native language for the exact reasons you state.

Some lower budget kung fu films are quite funny with the English dubs (and more than a few Shaws too). If you want a really entertaining and fun kung fu film (in Cantonese) with poor English subtitles that only make the movie even more enjoyable. The Loot (and another movie by the same team, The Challenger) are on Prime.

tonight is 'Warning Sign' from 1985. Sam Waterston, Kathleen Quinlan in a biohazard accident. Like 28 Days but done 10 years earlier

Even has a Jerry Hardin from x-files fame.
Tomorrow is my guilty pleasure, 'Eight Legged Freaks'. Who doesnt like big spiders. No contest with the great black and white 50's type of bug movies.

Both light weight but entertaining enough. A few more weeks of this and I'll be ready to go back to my favories like Them! And Day The Earth Caught Fire and Crawling Eye :)

Manchester By the Sea (2016)

It so exceeded my expectations... and I was more than a little surprised when I found that I couldn’t stop watching it. It will nearly break your heart, maybe especially if you’re a Yankee and you’ve ever lost anyone you loved who died for no good reason, and if you have ever had to try to help raise a teeenage boy.

It’s pretty pitch-perfect acting if you’re that and you’ve been there and have ever done that. Casey Affleck nailed it and Lucas Hedges right behind him.

The soundtrack picks, mixing sacred and profane, were right on the money. Pure genius to home in on the meanings of life with a little help from Handel, Massenet, Bob Dylan and Duke Ellington (among others).

It’s not every American film that manages to open a credible window on despair and healing at the same time. I’m happy it was nominated for numerous Oscars and won several. Not to cast shade on Moonlight but this would have been a great Best Picture of the Year too.

I saw this and boy, that was awesome!! Much better and entertaining than Beauty and the Beast IMO which I saw last week and one of the better movies I've seen recently, which is surprising! Good character development, good story reboot, good CGI and SPOILER: OMG the moment the Power Rangers theme from the 1995 movie came out I lost it! Also when Jason says "It's Morphin Time!" and the Tommy and Kimberly cameo and the post-credits scene! :D

My only rant would be no Skull and Bulk but guess their comedic relief is not needed for the sort of darkish feel of the movie.

Fingers crossed!

My Stepmother Is an Alien

I really liked this movie as a kid and completely forgot it existed. Watching last night, I was surprised by how well the humor's held up. I legitimately laughed out loud quite a few times. 100% corny 80s fun!

Oh totally, I've seen 5DV like 50 times :D I think I still have it on DVD! She's big into Anime now too, got her a subscription to Funimation, I've got a set to limited the content, since as you know, some of it can get way beyond R-rated, but I don't think she would be bother by it, heck, she's been playing some intense video games with me like Resident Evil.

I've pretty much only watched Kurasawa in the original language, but I think I'll try some Shaw sometime, seems like fun.

Awesome. I am sure she'll be fine with it as it's so utterly fake. She'll probably enjoy the superhero moments immensely.

#1 Centipede will be in NY in November along with a screening of Five Venoms...can't wait for that. I hear Lu is a very nice man despite usually being cast as bad guys. #1, #4 and #5 are still active in Hong Kong (#1 and #4 behind the scenes, #5 still acting. Sadly, #3 was involved in a career changing accident and #6 passed away very young. Don't know what happened to #2. And the fighter who plays the dying master at the start of 5V is starting to make movies again, which is great.)

Speaking of the Venoms, watched the extremely unPC Crippled Avengers (a.k.a Return of the Five Deadly Venoms) on my commute home. Vengeful clan lord cripples anyone who dares not kowtow to his clan's bully tactics (the result of which came from his son's maiming and wife's murder); so in come in four of our Venoms who each wind up with a sense or limb removed as a result of not kissing behind. Ultimately the tables are turned and the portion of the end fight against the crazy father is terrific.

I dig the moral (doesn't matter if you don't have all your senses or limbs, that doesn't make you handicapped, your mind does), and I utterly love Chen Kuan Tai as the psychotic pop. Though I wish the Venoms gave him more time to fight. The man is such a legend and when he cuts loose he really cuts loose.

Just watched Justice League Dark. Not a kids animated movie (Rated R) due to language and violence. Really was a good watch, though. My teenagers liked it and so did the wife. If you like DC heroes, comics and/or animation I recommend this one.

Swamp Thing, Deadman?

The Angry Guest (1972) Sequel to The Duel of the Fists (not The Duel mind), this silly excuse for an Iron Triangle Shaw Brothers movie had me laughing pretty hard on many fronts (all unintentional). In The Duel of The Fists, the Fan brothers disgraced the mobsters who ran the elder's brothers' (Ti Lung) Muay Thai fighting circuit, so he and little brother Fan (David Chiang) kinda sorta happily reunited after years and years of not knowing each other existed.

But onto our sequel: the Yakuza (led by director Chang Cheh himself) are not amused by the Fans making fools of them, so in revenge they kidnap elder brother's girlfriend (the usually lackluster Ching Li.) If the boys agree to work with the Yakuza, the girl goes free. Naturally, Ti and David's characters being righteous young men, refuse.

So now Yakuza want the Fan boys D-E-A-D. Send in the usual Shaw Brothers stunt folks and Yasuaki Kurata to do the deed. Well, try anyway.

An aside, a couple of the kung fu gents at Shaws completely rocked the 70s clothes (that would be David Chiang and Chan Wai Man.) Not so for Chinese strong man (and wooden actor) Bolo; whose shades, hippie fringe vest and buzz cut here had me rolling even harder than the first time I sat through this. Add the mix surprisingly bad fight choreography (that Ti and David kind of make look good) and the most artificial end fight in a "modern" SB movie up to that point. Construction sites would later become the place to settle serious scores (and be as deadly as the folks fighting in them), but not here.

As I revisit Chang Cheh's output with Ti and Chiang and the Venoms, it's obvious the two heart throbs got the better stories. Though you'd probably never know it from this. I could swear Ti Lung looked mildly annoyed at points where his character wasn't supposed to. Chiang's whatever aura seems to also hint he was pretty bored with this one too, but I wouldn't be surprised if this was rushed into production after the first film was a hit.
