OMG OMG OMG

I had some faith in Villeneuve, he seems to understand Sci-fi, as just a lens for trying to understand the human condition, even more optimistic (though still very cautious) ...

Blade Runner 2049 was one of the most mind-blowing films I’ve seen. It’s breathtaking and transportive. Denis Villeneuve has a masterpiece.
Jenna Busch, Legion of Leia

Blade Runner 2049 is sci-fi masterpiece; the kind of deep-cut genre film we don’t see anymore. Visually mind blowing, absolutely fantastic.
Erik Davis, Movies.com

I saw Blade Runner 2049 and it is BREATHTAKING. It’s an impressive follow-up, preserving mysteries, adding new ones, expanding the universe.
William Bibbiani, IGN Movies

Good news! Blade Runner 2049 is a terrific continuation and expansion of the original. Wasn’t hoping for much, ended up LOVING it. (Even Leto!).
Jordan Hoffman, The Guardian

I saw Blade Runner 2049 a few days ago, and the more I think about it the more I love about it. Gorgeously directed. Sylvia Hoeks is AMAZING.
Terri Schwartz, IGN Movies

Astonishing. More than just a visual wonder, it’s a groundbreaking science fiction masterpiece.
Jimmy O., JoBlo’s Movie Emporium

Everyone bow down to Denis Villeneuve. He’s done the impossible and delivered a huge home run with Blade Runner 2049. Loved it. You do not have to have seen the original Blade Runner to watch Blade Runner 2049. But it will definitely make the film better if you have. Even if you have no interest in the film, the breathtaking cinematography by Roger Deakins is worth the price of admission. He’s a God.
Steve Weintraub, Collider

I’ve seen Blade Runner 2049. I looks amazing, characters and performances are strong, stays true to the original but there are flaws.
Simon Thompson, IGN Movies

Blade Runner 2049 is phenomenal. Visually mind-blowing sci-fi with noir roots shining through in a tight, twisty mystery. Best of 2017 so far. Denis Villeneuve is unquestionably one of the elite working directors and there’s no excuse if Deakins doesn’t win the Oscar.

Red Dawn (1984)

Watched it last night. Hadn't seen it in years.

Time for some action, 'The Rock' is starting to play.
I saw it in theaters when it came out. It and Entrapment, that came out a few years later, are Connery's finest work of that era in his acting career.

I agree they were very good works by him.

Red Dawn (1984)

Double/Triple feature it with Roadhouse and/or Point Break :D

Actually, even though those are all fun movies, if you want an amazing film starring Swayze (and Matt Dillon, C Thomas Howell, Rob Lowe, Tom Cruise, Ralph Macchio), look no further than Coppola's incredible adaptation of The Outsiders!

At this point, it's very highly likely we'll see this at the theater, it's rare for us to go, but I don't think I can wait ...

I'm not a big fan of Swayze. The reason I watched it was because I wanted to watch the remake from 2009 or whatever, but I wanted to rewatch the original.

Red Dawn (2012)

Jesus wept at how stupid this film was. So many cliches. I thought the dated themes and language in the original rubbed me the wrong way. The remake was worse.

the_master_strike_back_.jpg

The Master Strikes Back (1984) Probably the last good Shaw Brothers movie made (and certainly Sun Chung's last excellent movie for the studio): What happens when your subservient attitude towards totalitarian authority leads to fear and the destruction of your lineage? You wind up consumed by the very ugliness that poisoned the town you find yourself in.

This is an incredibly rough movie to watch (the castration and abortion moments to be sure, but also watching a father be so scared he ignores his son until it's too late), but Ti Lung and Chan Wai-Man play against each other so damn well (as they always do), because of them, I find myself watching this more frequently than I ever thought possible.

There's a bit more realism here than in the duo's previous team ups, at least until you get to the final confrontation which Sun mercifully dials back after so much physical and psychological suffering. While a lot is suggested, the few moments that aren't, push this toward a hard R rating. It's a horror movie in the psychological sense (and in a couple of sequences it looks/feels very much so), even though it is not labelled as such. The toughest thing to watch is how just much of a coward Ti Lung's Instructor Tong is, as his son becomes the target of the corrupt officials. The young actor playing the kid is such a brat that you only wind up caring for him when the worst possible outcome occurs, which naturally spurs Tong to finally grow a pair so to speak.

As Sun wrote this film, I can only wonder if he'd seen similar things while growing up in Taiwan under a Communist China's yoke (by similar I meant the corruption and secret police tactics.) Ti and Chan are the only reasons I keep coming back to this movie. If Sun had made this with other actors, I think I would have watched twice and let it go. This is a movie I have to be in a certain mind to watch.

Both excellent, in fact, I posted about, 'A Dark Song' a few pages back, amazing it's more or less, one location, two actors and a limited budget - shows the effectiveness of performance and script.

agreed!!
apologies for mentioning again

next stop: Wish upon
high probability to be a disappointing movie, but heck, I'll give it a chance considering the cast & that the director is a cinematographer who has worked on other big projects like The Conjuring & Insidious

Oh no biggie, there's plenty of dupes. A couple we recently watched (seems like we have some overlapping tastes):

The Devil's Candy (2015)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4935372/

House on Willow Street (2016)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4961380/

Devil's Candy is the better movie, it's a little more subtle (until the end), has _great_ performances, a really eerie and uncomfortable vibe, a real psychological ordeal. Apparently, this writer/director's previous movie, The Loved Ones (2012) is pretty fantastic, even better from a review standpoint (98% on RT with 45 reviews)

House has a great premise, some good scares/twists, but runs a little long after one of the main plot points is revealed, has some typical, moments, it's a more conventional horror.

Suggestions much appreciated, and I am after them as we speak!

On a side note, I am not too big on gore (after checking the plot of The Loved Ones).

Movies like Saw, Hostel, Texas Chainsaw and the sorts, are sorely hated by yours truly.
Evidently there are some exceptions, eg Jane doe mentioned above, or the remake of Evil Dead, which is really a very, VERY intense movie, however, thoughtless, cannibalistic, never-ending torture gore inflicted from human to human is way beyond my scope of enjoyment (Hannibal Lecter excluded).

Oh, then you'll appreciate The Devil's Candy even more, it's not gory, I mean, there's some blood, but most of the violence is not shown/just implied. It's on Netflix BTW!

I just read that Villeneuve might direct the new Bond, is this movie good?

--

I just saw Le Chef, French comedy about a struggling family man who can't land a job in the kitchen whilst a veteran chef faces off against his restaurant group's new CEO, who wants to the establishment to lose a star from its rating in order to bring in a younger chef who specializes in molecular gastronomy. Very funny!

Is Jurrasic World good? Yes it is, although I won’t guarantee you’ll like it. It fits my bill for a summer adventure movie, good story, a successful dino park, where dino design goes arguably too far. ;) Fast moving, super seamless CGI that makes it hard to believe these are not real creatures on the rampage.

Even though they ripped up the story a bit, this movie made CGI history. :)
