I've been here for like 20 years, and MR has always been mostly an aggregator of rumors. I don't know what you mean by "actual digging and journalism".

And, if anything, I find this current era where the rumors about the iPad (turns out it's just a pencil, and a minor upgrade in China only) and now the Mac (none coming! All coming! No iMac! Only the iMac!) are completely contradictory pretty fun. Whereas, the iPhone has gotten very boring. Not just because this year saw the seventeenth release of it, so what can I possibly expect?, but also because so much of it gets leaked in advance. At least the software side leaks a lot less, because it largely doesn't rely on a supply chain. For example, the Dynamic Island was a complete surprise last year!
Naw Kim actually reported quite a bit of stuff through his own digging back then. They still do, especially when it gets closer to an event, someone seems to be feeding them confirmations, but if an event is month or more out they’ll report it as the gospel sometimes.

Seems so odd we would get M3 Pro/Max for refreshed MBPs that were updated last January, and base M3 only for the iMac that was unfortunately forgotten - yet the typical recepients of base chips have to wait longer, and so do other higher-end models that use the Pro/Max variants.

And none of this coincides with the 'scary fast' theme, unless it's to showcase the M3 as something dramatically faster than the M2 (which it probably isn't unless Apple puts an exagerated focus on a GPU feature like raytracing).

I guess we'll see tomorrow.

My guess is that Apple wants to update the MacBook Air 13" and 15" models together and with the M2 15" model launching only four months ago, that is way too early to replace it. Same with the M2 Mac Studio (plus I doubt Apple can afford to cut M3 MAX production by also shipping an M3 ULTRA).

I would guess we will see the MacBook Air family move to M3 either in March (alongside the M3 iPad Pro and iPad Air) or at WWDC 2024 (alongside the Mac Studio and Mac Pro).

I wonder if the iPad mini will get the A17 Pro to allow gaming? The larger display would definitely be an improvement if you want to play console games.
