Guy will wait, but not long. His job is to deliver it and if it's not
visibly broken by something like a crushed or ripped box, he's gone.

Anyway, you'll be under too much time pressure to really check it all out.
Just sign for it and return it if a significant problem arises. I've bought
five Mac's over the years and never had a problem. Only buy from
extremely reputable sources.

yes time pressure!! the worst thing is I will not be able to enjoy with opening the box with giving time and taking photos, recording etc...! I really would love to make a nice unboxing video :D but in my case I just have to open and check everything VERY QUICKLY! shame to ruin that unpacking moment. :(

An unpacking video would be absolutely hilarious, I'm sure as long as the delivery person is getting paid a tad bit extra they will gladly stay along, some might even do it without the compensation.

Actually my wife can make a delicious cake and I can offer to delivery guy with tea :D :D hahaha! maybe even Vodka :D :D than it would be fun to make a 5hours un-boxing video with the carrier :D :D haha yes i should do that :p :p

or I can make the fastest ever unboxing video, it would be first probably :D with showing carrier (swearing) time to time hahaha :D

Remember that if he has tight schedule he can't stay. Call to the carrier and ask if you could have more time and pay some extra

to be serious, I will gently ask if he can give me only 5 mins to check, and i will check as much as I can very quickly. We already paid a bit extra money for exact day delivery, so 5 mins should be fine.

Unless you live outside of the US where online purchases and applecare are handled differently, this whole thing sounds a bit fishy.
What auction site other than ebay is mediating this transaction? What's their policy for buyer's protection? Are the seller's feedbacks genuine? Is this a legitimate delivery service with COD (UPS, Fedex etc)? Will the delivery really wait for you (can the seller just "contact" the UPS guy and tell him to wait?)
If you truly believe that this is a safe transaction, my advice to you is to simply check that 1. it's not a brick inside the box and 2. the serial number on computer matches one on the box (likely new). You can leave the other concerns to Applecare, and avoid feeling rushed to hand over the cash to the delivery guy. If you no longer feel safe about this transaction, I'd suggest just buying it from Apple's online store. I think the peace of mind (for your hard earned money) is well worth the small premium.

please keep in mind that my comments/questions are based on my gut feelings, and they bear the sole intention to protect you as the buyer.
good luck!

Actually It is a trustable portal like ebay. but the matter is I actually have nothing to do with this portal. I just saw the item at that portal, and in details page I saw seller messenger contact details, and I contacted to him over messenger. so actually we are doing this process personally out of any portal. I'm even not member to that portal. but this seller has pretty good feedback... and it is genuine...

carrier will wait, I clearly talked this with the seller, and he said that he spole to delivery company and carrier will wait for sure.

it looks pretty safe transaction to me. but I never trust 100% to anyone over the net. thats why i didnt pay even 1 dollar before having item at my home and checking if everything is fine with the item.

I will check the serial number on mbp with the box :) thanks for clue:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1559

only thing making me a bit worry is; I will not be able to get any receipt about this purchasing. I buy this from a person, not from any shop. is there anything to do with this for future apple support service? will apple ask me for any proof of receipt in case of I contact them for my item's problem? i dont know.

as I see, to sum up;

  • check the box if there is no bricks in : )
  • check the serial number on mbp and box, see if it matches
  • control the serial number for warranty at apple offical page (link below)
  • quick boot-up to see if it really works
  • and contact to Apple service for further matters

Warranty information for provided serial no
https://selfsolve.apple.com/GetWarranty.do

so if the list above is fine, just make payment to the carrier, and take the item. it is sealed-box anyway.

Why would they? If they do, just say you bought it from eBay. It's not illegal to sell it.

Obviously I'm just being really paranoid of worrying for every single details any more! :D

thanks for reply @Hellhammer. :) so nothing to worry about this matter.

-so you buy the mbp through a portal but directly from the seller
-the seller sends it through a delivery service that is willing to wait for extra cash
-the seller is sending the mbp without getting money first
-the seller pays extra for the delivery guy waiting
-you will not get any reciept
-are you planning to pay cash?

all this sounds very fishy to me. either the mbp is stolen, the seller is stupid or there is something else going on. make sure you're not alone when the mbp arrives. i would not do a deal like this.

my guess is they deliver a sealed box for a MBP. the delivery guy will refuse to let you open the box without you paying first. he will have lots of reasons for that. you will be so eager to get the MBP at that point that you agree because it's a factory sealed box anyway. you pay, the guy leaves quickly, you end up with a empty box or a stolen MBP or a broken MBP.

if you don't agree the delivery guy will leave and the seller risks nothing and he scams somebody else.

btw: in case you planned to pay cash they know you have $2000-$3000 in cash there.

??????

Like others have said, this whole transaction sounds very suspicious. For one, you don't list the "portal". Is it Craig's List? If so, I would be very leery of letting someone know that I have so much cash at home. Also, I have dealt with several carriers and not one will wait anywhere close to 5 minutes; I have never heard of someone paying the carrier extra to wait! Even if you paid for faster delivery, it means nothing to the individual carrier.

After this transaction occurs, please let us know the outcome.

yes all these points are right. and i will pay cash at the door. if carrier wont let me check the box first, I will just refuse it straight away!

I actually dont think somebody is gonna come with an empty box and take a knife and try to steal money. even if it is gonna be like that, I know very well how to deal with such case!!!

it is not a Craig's List, it is ebay like portal which is pretty trustable. and this guy has 100% positive feedback, and over 700 sale.

i dont know, i feel ok. should not I? : (

This seems incredibly suspect to me. What "portal" are you talking about even? I have never, ever heard of a transaction like this, it just seems dangerous.

portal is allegro.pl , but also nothing to do with portal actually. because we are not making this process over the portal. he asked me for my account at the portal, but i dont have any account, so we just dealed out of portal.

accounts get hacked all the time. so feedback alone is not a guarantee.

also, they won't most likely take your money at gun point. they just try to make you pay without opening the box. it's easy to seal a box with plastic wrap. do not agree to that.

what makes me worry is that the seller allows you to open the box before you pay. if you reject the mbp for whatever reason he can't sell it as new anymore. that is a $200-300 risk on top of shipping costs that he takes. given that it is very easy to sell mbp's on ebay for good money why would he do that?

if it's too cheap it's a scam.

also keep in mind that there may be another way to scam you that we don't know. for example look how many of the cautious and experienced macrumors members fell for the ebay applecare scam.

Do you have any idea why the seller is selling it and did he tell you where he bought it?

he is always selling, he is from england, and there are many computer shops which has good deals, sometimes ebay. i asked where he buys these... so he buys from such computer shops and sell to poland. he put some money on. i checked , he has sold over 150 macbook pro. and many other parts... he looks very trustable at the portal. and all clients are happy.

in poland macs are very expensive. there is almost 900$ difference at offical apple shops in poland and england.

it is not too cheap as much as can be scam. i checked england market, and his price is sensible.

i asked that how come he is okay to send item before taking any money. what if i dont accept delivery... and he said; "all he will loose is a small amount of delivery cost, and it is ok for him" he is a kind of very sure about his side that everything is legal and good and i will be happy with the delivery tem etc... so he feels okay with this type of transaction.

and for sure I will not pay even 1 dollar before checking the box! thats for sure if delivery makes problem like he doesnt have time, i will say "ok, bye than" and i will not take it. or he insists on taking money first, i will say "bye than"... so clear...

goodmorning to everybody :)

and today is the big day, delivery day!! :D I will write here about my suspicious outcome :D I hope everything is gonna be fine and I finally will have my very own beautiful macbook pro.

I can only pray that everything that work out right.
To the people who think it's suspicious, the "portal" thing is a bit.
However, it should be noted that FedEx and UPS in the US also offer services where they collect cash upon delivering an item.
It's known as Collect on Delivery (COD).
