My suggestions

I particularly dislike iTube, sorry to those who like it, it just evokes "boob tube" too much, and particularly since there've been no tubes involved in TV watching for years and years...

Here's what I like:

iLink (ok, I don't really like that)

iCast (for all you "stream/receive/view" people, here's a nod to broadcasting)

iPlay

I particulary like iPlay

iPlay makes me think of pressing play, and enjoying what starts. And it works over the long run because they can eventually add games to it as they have to the iPod...

think of the naming precedents: iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, each references the content, not the device (not iStereo, iCamera, iCamcorder). iTV references the device.

But those are software. This is hardware. Oh wait, you got that covered:

of course, the new product isn't a software app, but a device, so maybe that naming system isn't valid. instead, think of device naming precedents: Airport card, Airport Base Station, Airport Express, Airport Extreme.

None of those are comparable. Especially given the number of wires that are going to be involved. "Air" has less and less to do with these things.

How about iPod? Sounds like it's describing the device. iSight? Again, just an Apple'd up version of camera or eye.

But if you're going to complain about iTV on that basis anyway, it still doesnt' necessarily stick. "What are you going to watch?" "TV." TV is the content as well as the device.

i'd prefer the hybrid "iStream".

iStream all over you. Sorry, couldn't find the bathroom :p

but my vote would go to iShow because it describes what the product will do for you, it references the media, it sustains Apple's nifty "iXxxx" heritage, and it rolls off the tongue a lot more easily, so it's better in several ways for marketing purposes.

I agree, iShow would be pretty good. Although it's such a passive name, and only refers to visuals - but since it's intended to hook up to a screen, maybe that's OK. You can "show" your music in some sense I suppose.

I just prefer iPlay because it's expandable to games & other interactive stuff in the future.

chiming in...

name approved by movie industry -
- iWon'tWriteDVDs

if competing with tivo -
- TVIO (tele vision in out)
- iTVO (another devious respelling of TIVO)

if another iWord

- iShow

If named, as with the original Lisa

- Vanessa

my suggestion

iPlay
also I think that they should offer more stuff on itunes. I think they should sell movie tickets, similiar to fandango, but you have a "buy ticktets now" button right next to the trailer in itunes. After you watch the trailer, you can buy tickets, it automatically syncs the date to your ical, and charges your itunes account.

I think itunes needs to become the "best buy" of the internet. And they also need to have a service similiar to paypal. Just one single place where you can buy anything media related. even concert tickets, with the purchase button being next to the current artist your looking at. based on your location, it automaticall has a little pop up or something that says "so and so will be in your area on so and so date, would you like to purchase tickets?" and you can, and just charge your account. Maybe itunes can even do some cross promotion, where if you buy a ticket, a couple of downloads are available. I also think that they should open a part of the store for independent film, where people can upload there own movies, and set a price and see how well they sell. apple will just take a percentage of the profits. anyways, thats my idea and hopefully that will be the direction that iTV o iPlay will go, just being a portal to all the available media out there.

I think itunes should open up a sort of "wikipedia" media thing, where just as much content is user created, as is commercially created.

also I think another really interesting thing would be commercials. I know I know, not in the videos themselves, but maybe people can vote on the funniest or cleverist commercials and then those top ones will be available free for download, I know theres a lot of superbowl and budlight commercials I would love to see again, not to mention commercials from other countries with less on-air restrictions. It would be free advertising for the involved companies, and would be "one more thing" that people can go and download, and free.

I think it would also make competition among commercial makers, cause they would want to one up eachother and be funnier or crazier or whatever, trying to get that itunes top spot. If any of you have seen that "stunt city" dooderant commercial, that is exactly the kind of commercial I would love to have on my ipod. Maybe they can even have a dynamically created video, maybe 22 minutes long (standard tv show) that is auto assimilated based on votes. I dunno, now im rambling, gtg back to work, peace out.

How about Front Row TV?
Front Row would have been a good choice all by itself. Too bad Apple already used that name for the screen-control software. Front Row TV is ok, but not as good as Front Row would have been.

If the Apple Remote will control the iTV, perhaps iTV should be called the Apple eMote.

More suggestions

Since Apple Front Row is already taken, here are some other ideas:

Apple Mezzanine
Apple Orchestra Seating
Apple Living Room
Apple Personal Theatre Center Extreme 2nd Edition SP2
(oops, channeled Microsoft for a moment)

Apple Couch Potato
iLounge
iDrool
iAtrophy
iWallow (as in, "in my own filth")

another idea

what about sorta a play on iLife, like this is how you view all of your digital media, so call it iLive. sorta like living room, where it most likely will be. So now iLife and iLive go hand in hand, one compliments the other.

peace

Heheh yeah the Apple version would be

Apple Personal Theatre Centre, Version 1.1.4, Intel Edition

Someone mentioned "CenterStage" earlier. Well that's already been taken:

I like the previously suggested Mac TV.

If I had to suggest a new one, I'd have to go with something that expands the Hi-Fi series of Apple products. Something like Mac Hi-Fi. So die-hard Apple fans would have their iPod Hi-Fi and then their Mac Hi-Fi.

I personally like SpiceyApple's 'Teleport' suggestion on page one. I can see Apple going along these lines; what with 'Time Machine' and all. :)
