Alright, I finally dusted off a single 1.25 MDD G4-arguably the fastest production OS 9 machine-and got it going and online.
It took some "teething" pains to initially load the site, but now that it's loaded it's very peppy and responsive. I'm typing this post from it. At least as far as navigating around the site, it's(mostly) as fast as the G5 Quad using Leopad Webkit that I've been using this evening, although some pages will inexplicably bog down Classilla. The display is a a bit "wonky" though-it took me about 5 minutes to even find the sign in button!
Of course, it's also woth mentioning that I'm using Classilla 9.3.3. This was released fairly recently(I think February or March) and the developer pretty boldy proclaims it as alpha quality software. The rendering engine in Classilla is also getting really dated(the main focus is on security updates), so that could also be part of the issue. Even so, I need to dig out the previous Classilla build and see if it renders this page any differently. At least I'm not totally cut off on my OS 9 computers
I do have my(gigabit) router connected directly to the(gigabit) port on the G4, though, which I think also helps the page load speeds.
As I mentioned, IE 5 on my Sawtooth rolled over and died when I tried to load MacRumors. I don't have IE5 on the MDD. It takes a special OS 9.2.2 build, and I was too lazy to do a full re-install(I do at least have the correct disks) so am using the one left over from the machine's previous owner. I don't think they used OS 9 much, so all of the pre-installed OS 9 programs are gone. I'm not inclined to go out of my way to track down IE 5, even though it's really just a drag and drop from another OS 9 computer.
