The free year seems to be tied to the purchasing ID, not the activating ID of the new device. I bought an iPhone XR for my daughter's birthday last month which was set up and activated using her Apple ID, but it's me who's got the 1-year free trial.

I'm not sure how that works though if you bought the qualifying device from a third-party, or if you bought it from a bricks-and-mortar Apple Store so the purchase wouldn't be tied to a specific Apple ID - I guess then it must be tied to the ID used to activate the device which seems a very inconsistent approach!

What's other people's experience here?

i have the same issue. I bought an iPhone 11 for my sister and I am getting the free trial option. I bought it from an Apple store and provided my Apple ID so you are right. It’s tied to the purchaser which is weird. She is also in my family for Apple Music subscription so I can share TV with her as well.

I just opened the app, and it said "Watch First Episode". It never asked me to confirm a free subscription nor does it show in my subscriptions tab... I am able to watch The Morning Show, but now sure why my subscription trial doesn't appear. Hoping I don't get charged for now...

That's another snide anti-consumer thing Tim has sneaked in.

You used to be able to cancel ahead of time, and the trial period was set in stone. This also applies to Apple Music trials now as well.

So, I just canceled after signing up and it shows active for the next year. Not sure why that would be in the terms, but it seems to be fine for me.

You may not see the office if you have a student version of Apple Music. If you have Student Apple Music you get Apple TV+ for free and it looks like it’s tied to that. The question is now no one else in your family is able to watch it?

That seems to be the case with me. My wife receives the Apple Music Student subscription. She is the only one who is considered subscribed to Apple TV+. The other accounts in the Family are all asking to subscribe.

You don't have to wait for 11 month and cancel right now, you will be able to use all year. Cancel now so you don't forget.
UPDATE: Ignore my advise, Apple TV+ subscription works in a different way.

Apple Arcade, Apple TV+ and Apple News+ are all the same where you can’t cancel and still use it. Third party apps still work that way though.

I think everyone gets that episode as a subscription-free taster

Why every show only has 3 episodes this **** wack man ,I would never pay for this service or Disney thank god this free
Most shows release an episode per week, instead of giving you a sugar high binge of an entire season dump at once. I know it’s hard to, y’know, wait for a new episode of a show you like, but learning patience is good for you.

You won’t. That’s a sampler. Try a paid show like See, and you’ll be prompted.

I still wasn't prompted. I think I have a student Music account and after reading through some more comments, I guess that's why. Weird it doesn't show in subscriptions, though...

It appears there’s a little leeway here.

I purchased a new Apple TV 4K on August 28th and still got the free year, despite that being before the advertised date.

Unless the promo was also applied to AirPods Pro, which I just bought. But otherwise I wouldn’t have anything purchased after Sept. 10th that would qualify me. I was about to be kinda bummed, but they gave it to me anyway!

I still think AirPods should qualify. They cost more than the basic iPod Touch.

It showed up for me and I haven’t bought a new device.

my mum is on my family and recently got an iPhone 11 so that must have done it.

happy to get a freebie for the whole family 😊

I just cancelled my Apple Music Student Subscription. will have to wait a month since it just renewed and then I should get the option for the free year for Apple TV+ which includes family. Then I will have to re-subscribe to Apple Music student.

Ok so I managed to get the free year on my 11 Pro Max, great I thought. I got home and figured since my 4K Apple TV is also on my same Apple ID, that the free year would be good on that also and no, at least not that I’ve figured it out yet.

On m 4K Apple TV it offers me a free 7 day trial. I was under the impression I could watch my ATV+ on my 4K-ATV also...

Is that not the case? Thanks

I had no trouble pulling up the TV+ subscription from my 11PM purchase on my ATV.
