[doublepost=1540832097][/doublepost]Tomorrow we will see new iPads, Mac mini and MacBook Air replacement....NO NEW IMACS OR TOWER, RESERVED FOR JAN 2019, this is my prediction...yet another disappointing event for pro users
Damn I hope not, I'm here getting all excited about the iMac updates :-(

Have you ever thought of getting a NAS, the beauty of the QNAP NAS' is that all OS's can connect and share. It becomes the central hub of your network. I have 22TB of storage on mine, although 2 of the 6TB internals are in RAID1 so technically I only have 16TB of storage. You can use them for Time Machine as well which is handy if you've got multiple macs.
When it comes to NASes, I prefer Synology, thanks!

But thanks for the suggestion...

Huh? I was addressing external storage to someone else. But I am hoping to get one of those new iMacs.
Some people just have SO much Hate they just can't contain themselves... ;-)

Boy, you sure couldn't tell it from the amount of memes-per-inch in your Post.
...
I repeat: What ARE you doing here???

I'm not an Apple-hater. I'm an Apple user sorta disappointed with recent developments.

I like "Apple-hater" memes because they hurt those Apple users who gladly adopt whatever Apple makes, no matter what it is. I want them to start thinking and vote for better products with their wallets, by not buying the current crippled ones. Single-button mouse was eventually replaced with better options, and I believe that mentioning it in evil jokes played some good role here :)

I typed my first post on my iPhone 7 Plus (a pity it has no 3.5 mm jack ))))) and I'm typing this post on my 2015 MBP (a pity it has no Ethernet port)))))

Best reagards!

I've only ever used QNAP. I'm interested to know why you prefer Synology. I don't have any experience with them.
And I don't have any with QNap, so there! ;-)

Seriously, though. The (non-Apple) world seems to love Synology, and so when it came time for me to recommend a NAS for my employer's backup system, I looked into them. The NAS I spec-ed for them has been humming along 24/7/365 since 2013, and has been repurposed as an off-site backup for our ultra-critical files (we write WINDOWS software!) I think spec-ed an 8-drive Synology (we outgrew the 4 drive one), and it has been operating without a hiccup for a year now.

I liked them so much that, when it came time to replace an awful Buffalo NAS that a rich friend of mine had as a media-store, I spec-ed TWO of the home-version of the 4 drive NAS that we originally bought for my employer, and they have been happily humming along for almost 3 years now. Those two are hooked to an Apple-based network. The first two, above, are running on a Windows network. The "home" NASes were only $280 (without drives). I filled them both with HGST 4T drives (16 TB raw, 11 TB formatted), and one self-replicates to the other one as a backup. All very simple to set up.

We'll see tomorrow!!!

Maybe we can BOTH be happy!

I had no idea that the non-Apple world loves Synology. I own a DS212 (2012), and it's been working perfectly fine 24/7 for me since then. I went for Synology because of the UI and design. I recommended it to all my friends, and we're a happy Synology family.

What? No mention of the all new MacBook Pro with 4 touchbars, a 2 year keyboard self destruct feature, and no ports at all. It is very courageous because it uses wireless charging..... /s.

Boy, you sure couldn't tell it from the amount of memes-per-inch in your Post.

"Fashion Accessory"

"Load of Dongles"

"Just Works" (used in a sarcastic manner)

"Apple lemmings"

"Think Different" (used in a sarcastic manner)

Single-Button-Mouse (boy, you had to blow the dust off THAT one, didnja?)

Is that about it? SIX Apple-Hater-memes in a FOUR paragraph Post!

That has to be a RECORD!!!

I repeat: What ARE you doing here???

He’s showing “courage”

Upon what evidence are you basing your Jan 2019 prediction?

SD-cards are still in use and not going away any time soon. Photography is slowly migrating to other solutions, but is still predominantly on SD-cards. There is no full featured replacement at this time. It's not rare. It's not a special case.
I think to some degree Apple thinks photography is migrating more and more to the smartphone, primarily by people relying on their smartphone for a camera but also by the smartphone being the ingestion device. Almost all new cameras have companion apps for smartphones to receive images from the camera via Wifi and Bluetooth. In a most radical example, Leica just days ago released the M10-D without a rear display where reviewing images (as well as setting a lot of camera settings) is done via an app running on your phone.

Direct tethering of cameras either via WiFi or via cable (USB, TB) is common among professional photographers in studio settings or other 'arranged' shoots where direct reviewing of the result is needed. Photographers (outside a studio) with very high throughput (eg, sports) tend to use memory cards that are faster than SD cards: CFast and XQD (it's bit like USB vs TB).

All this is to say while the SD card standard is evolving, it is under pressure from two sides: 1) the complete switch to network connected camera (aka smartphones) either directly or indirectly via some sort of wireless image transfer and 2) from the high-end where either immediacy (tethering) or very fast speeds (CFast, XQD) are in use. And it is largely the middle between those two extremes of camera enthusiasts that is using mostly SD cards.

I'm in a ****-stirring mood today, so here are my "never going to happen" and "so crazy it'll probably happen" predictions. You can choose which are which ;-)

1: The new iPad Pro and MacBook are the same device. Tim will act like it's the worlds first convertible tablet/laptop ever. It will run both MacOS and iOS, depending on what mode you're in. Half the people here will hate it. Half will love it. Few will actually have any intention of buying it.

2: We will have a Mac Mini and Mac Pro announcement. The Mac Mini will be the head unit of the "Modular" Mac Pro. It will be a CUBE. It will have user-serviceable ram, storage and 1, count um, 1 user-serviceable graphics card. Base price will be $1999. "Can't innovate my ass" will be heard from.. someone .. on stage.

3: Intel and Apple will announce Wireless Thunderbolt. This will be the technology that the Mac Mini and additional Mac Pro components use to connect to each other. It will be built into every Apple device from Tuesday on.

Have a great day, and have a great Tim-Note tomorrow y'all!

I'm too poor to afford any new gear this time around (although my iPad 2 is slowly driving my bonkers, due to its ancient (by web standards) browser)... But I am VERY interested to see what they have in mind for the iPad and the Mac mini this go-around!

That's my biggest gripe with Apple: they've abandoned a large segment of the much more price conscious market with their pricing strategies. They used to have real education discounts and now it's cheaper to buy one from B&H and sell your old one to Best Buy than take advantage of the free Beats and educational discount at. the Apple store. A good $600 - 700 Mac would go a long way to getting more people into Apple's ecosystem. I get Apple's build quality is better than most of the low end plastic Winboxen but keeping say the Air and dropping its price like they do with older iPhones would be a start.

It wouldn't have to be a hotrod but powerful enough for most tasks. Of course, some would then complain it couldn't run a FPS at 60fps while emulating Windows...

I agree, but that's mostly the P&S market they're canabalizing. As for me, they'll get my L glass when they pry my cold, dead fingers from it...

Fair enough, if Synology is reliable and lasts I can see why you'd stick with it.

My QNAP NAS' have held up to heavy use. I love it, tinkering with the "Community Apps" like NextCloud, HomeAssistant, NZBGet, Radarr, Sonarr, and many others. I also love Plex, streaming a huge catalogue of music, tv shows, movies, podcasts, web series, etc. to every device in my lan is pretty great. I love how versatile NAS's are. I also use it for surveillance with IP cams. Learning Command Line is a real joy for me, as well.

Synology makes a great product. I've had one for a number of years; what is critical IMHO is to use a NAS certified HD or you are asking for problems.

Only problem: Running out of space to store my movies and TV shows I stream...

Maybe we can BOTH be happy!

I looked at Synology to begin with. I knew nothing about NAS' but I understood you could create a huge plex server. And I read many reviews and QNAP seemed to make the top lists in almost all of the reviews I read. So, I just flipped a coin basically between a Synology model and a QNAP and QNAP won. I want to buy a Synology now, just to see what I'm missing out on lol

SD cards are what most cameras use. Getting rid of the sd reader is a pita for photo and video enthusiasts/professionals.

I know they want this slim device with no ports, but computers are for work, and SD cards (or xqd etc) are needed for the foreseeable future.

Was removing tape cassette drives due to greed? Was removing floppy drives (both 3.5” and 5.25”) due to greed? Was removing cd and dvd drives due to greed? Removing SD reader slots is greed?
Or could it just be that technology advances, and people’s needs change. As someone pointed out earlier in this thread, students rely much less on portable storage like SD cards. They use the cloud. Apple recognizes this, and eliminates things it thinks don’t need to be included any more. Every example I gave above resulted in people complaining. I used them all, and I remember the discussions.
