Nobody calls it a redesign... because it wasn't a redesign.

then i dont think you will see redesigned ipad in the next couple of years.
next year, thinner, quadcore, better camera, new ios, icloud features. certainly not a redesign. was ipad 1 -> ipad 2 a redesign? if apple chose to use liquidmetal in next ipad, but it looks the same, would that be a redesign?

When does Mountain Lion come out?

If the rumours prove to be correct, we might see the new iMac at that time perhaps.

Believe me guys, once Intel announces Ivy Bridge (public release), I would expect Apple to announce the iMac very soon after, then release it a week later.

I know it's only a guess, but I believe we will most definitely see it before May 31.

As always, this late in the game, if you can wait, then do so.

Who with any sense is worried about the iMac getting any thinner !!! ... Its a desktop ... It doesn't make a blind bit of difference if it gets a little thinner ... Apart from having ( probably ) more of a heat problem
I'm quite happy with the thickness ... All I'm interested in is efficiency and reliability ... And for it to be pretty of course ... But all this thinner thinner business just reminds me of this obsession with scrawny models in fashion and its pretty daft really isn't it :))

Waiting for the new iMac to finally leave Windows behind. ;)
I agree that thinner doesn't mean better. I prefer a slightly thicker machine that works flawlessly and for a long time, than an ultra-thin one that is always over-heating and displaying problems.

As said above, it's a desktop, not a laptop, a tablet or a mobile phone, for god's sake!!! ;)

I'd also want the prices to lower a bit, given the economic climate, but I don't see this coming... ;(

What is everyones view point on an optical drive, are we going to see the end of the optical drives in iMacs after this refresh/redesign.

Currently, I am deadset on converting to Mac from PC, however want to wait for the increased performance of ivy bridge and 7000m series of GPU, and hopefully cheaper SSD options. However i don't think i am ready to lose my optical drive.

Any idea's on whether it would be worth the wait for the next iMac without a optical drive, or just dive in and get the current gen, and go through the hard process of installing an aftermarket OCZ agility 3 SSD. Not much of a video editor, but photoshop and illustrator should be fine on an i5 as currently i'm doing fine on a dual core, 1st gen i5.

The MacBook Air super drive is $79.00. I think if they leave one out of the machine and it's subsequently cheaper, they will likely offer a similar add on?

Hdd/ssd

i want to see apple making the HDD/SSD user upgradable just like the memory. i'm fine with the current thickness unlike some people who want thinner AIO computer. I wouldn't mind it getting a bit thicker if the performance would be raised and there would be no heat problems. as always, apple will surprise us once again. standard SSD (128GB) plus a 1TB or more HDD option is expected. although a mac is your money's worth, i would like to see apple putting in some more goodies for the premium that is paid. just my opinion. Looking forward to this upgrade. :apple:

One of the reasons i am upgrading to an iMac, is the fact i hate desk clutter. A super drive would add to the clutter and piss me off, alot. Just having a portable external hdd is annoying enough.

Fair enough. You probably use one a lot then. I'd likely only use it 3/4 times a year, if that, if at all.

Just noticed you are in Liverpool. I'm not, in Canada, but you can likely guess I'm from there.

Well, desks have drawers. Piss you off? Annoying? No one is forcing you to join the Mac world. Glad to see that you are focusing on the big picture about computers and OS's.

Not the case at all. I will probably use it once or twice a week. As DvD's and CD's are still with us, i like to be able to burn media onto my computer, and then not have to worry about finding the disc again. With Windows, i would re-install the whole OS after say 4 months or so to keep it running semi-smooth. This would not be the case with a mac though and therefore i guess an optical drive would be obsolete and therefore borrowing a friend/familys external drive could be viable.

No real need to get sarcastic, however;

I understand that in the future, Optical drives will be obsolete, i completely get that. However, at this current time data on discs is still handy to have, and i am just stating about my personal view on desk clutter. I want to cut down on all clutter and not just desk clutter. I prefer having multi-use objects rather than multiple objects for different uses.

This is the same reason I went for a PS3 over an xbox, the fact of having a blu-ray player AND a gaming console in one, and as I will be using the iMac for media, i like to know i have all bases covered.

I completely agree that moving forward with the digital age is innevitable, and would love to see all media off CD/DvD storage. I just want to know that i have a optical drive, should the need arise.

I wasn't particularly being sarcastic. I have a drawer full of dying cd's, cables, etc., that I weed out every now and then. I am going to upgrade my iMac to the new that is predicted to come out later this year. If the optical drive is gone in the redesign, I will purchase a smart drive and stick it in that drawer. For me, Macs just work better. I would not give up my Mac and Apple OS unless I had to. A drive is such a minor thing.

My Opinion Only, your mileage will vary,
David

I wouldn't hinge on that. ML its slated to be out later in summer or early fall. It will coincide with iPhone/iPods, most likely. Might hit with the minis. We'll see. I think these iMacs will sling out in a month.

I guess I took the wording in the wrong way.

I totally agree, I have been around people with Mac's for a long time, and for a long time I have loved the OS. My massive problem was finding the right Macintosh, and one that seemed to be worth my money. The current iMac is £880 GBP, and for the same price I can only get a home built, full sized PC, of similair specs (better GPU and cooling solutions, along with a Windows 7 OS (not OEM). I really think that Apple are catering for the middle of the road consumers now.

peripherals

does anyone know if Apple will be redesigning their wireless accessories that come with the Mac (keyboard, magic mouse, magic trackpad)?

As last year showed with the release of the iMac only a few months before the release of Lion, I think that expecting them to come together is not really sound. It may happen, but I doubt waiting for ML would be the cause since they didn't see it as necessary to wait for Lion.

seems like nobody knows if anything other than IvyBridge, which is pretty substantial, although brand new and possibly suspect for first year glitches, is going to be for certain. From what i gather, from reading here, for basic intermediate use, there is not going to be a whole lot of difference in the 2012 iMac experience from that of the already grooving Sandy Bridge iMac 2011.

Other than more SSD options (likely), for my needs, I am pretty confident that I'll be happy pulling the trigger now. I get so close and then I remember the "advisor" ... "don't buy".... update soon.

The iMac has always been marketed as a middling computer. That said, it is more capable and powerful than some give it credit for. Some, not all, of the MP aficionados would be equally well served on the iMac. Unless you are doing real scientific work or doing hard core video rendering, the iMac might a good choice.

I love the OS, you can't get that on a homebuilt.

I hope that I did not cause offense, my original post should have been worded more neighborly.

Best,
David

If the new iMac is annonced without theODD just by the 2011 iMac. If you are dead set on an ODD and the 2011 iMac is powerful enough for your use, just buy it.

As of OS X Lion you do not need optical media to do an OS recovery. Lion comes with the utility. you can always move the Lion install to a USB drive. which is smaller. The only reason I could see a ODD as useful in OS X would be to rip DVD's and Blu-ray.

Patents of a thinner keyboard designed were leaked. However I've seen nothing to do with the mouse. Hopfully a redesigned more ergonomic magic mouse. The magic trackpad is nice but to do professional photo editing, web design or any other intensive High presision task makes my wrists get soar and movie editing is not as precise on the trackpad either.

Anyways probably a thinner keyboard. And maybe a better mouse but apple will probably start shipping the magic trackpad as default.

Buy a flash drive. they're cheap. They're small. They leave no reason to need a ODD.
