I'd expect something along the lines of this, though of course this is just my speculation.
Low 21.5"
2.8GHz i5 (3450S)
4GB RAM
1TB HD
AMD 7750m 512MB

High 21.5"
3.0GHz i5 (3550S) - 3.1GHz i7 (3770S) Upgrade
4GB RAM
2TB HD
AMD 7770m 1GB

Low 27"
3.0GHz i5 (3550S)
4GB RAM
2TB HD
AMD 7770m 1GB

High 27"
3.3GHz i5 (3550) - 3.4GHz i7 (3770) Upgrade
4GB RAM
2TB HD
AMD 7970m 2GB

All hard drives upgradeable to 3TB and a 256GB SSD additional.
RAM upgradable to 16GB either running at 1333MHz or 1600MHz, 8GB RAM could be standard in the high end model but we will have to wait and see, most people are probably fine with 4GB.
USB ports are now all 3.0 along with all the ports it currently has now.
Graphics cards and VRAM could be NVIDIA Cards with the likes of 660m and 680m with between 512MB and 2GB of VRAM.
As for the optical drive the iMac may or may not keep it.

I think an i7 will be standard for all the iMacs apart from maybe the very low end one. That's what they did with the latest MacBook Pros.

I think they will do a media event, where they present the new iMac (new processor, new GPU) together with Diablo 3. Diablo release Time fits and it would be a new clientele when you get some gamers to see that games are also working on iMacs.

Do remember the mobile i7 have a much larger range with 5-6 quad cores and 3-5 dual cores. all desktop i7 are the 3770 set of 4 which is has 2 low power variants and an over clocking one. They won't use the extreme i7 because they are 130W vs 77W CPUs.

When the new iMac will be coming out? Will be in May 2012? Will they redesign?

I'm loosing a bit patience of waiting, it's time for an upgrade.

For all you people asking for thinner iMac after some research Thinner iMac= less space = more heat = slower components = fail

Plus Even if does get thinner it will be like MBA thin but with under powered CPUS/Gou. Then everyone will moan again.

if they can make it thinner with the same class of components (and they can, lower tdps in cpu and gpu this year), they will make it thinner

Correct.
Keep the performance the same using lower powered CPU/chipset, remove ODD, make thin and charge the same price.

Add no value/performance over the 2011 model other than thinner profile & 10% less power consumption.

If they keep the pricing the same, I hope there's a performance increase and better specs other than lower power consumption & thinner profile.

It's nice to dream but I'm just being realistic. ODD will have to go for that to happen plus the chips are not that cooler on the 21.5 iMacs. They will run at same current TDP as they are now. Are you saying 27" will be different form factor to 21.5" as that's the only ones that will see lower tdp CPU wise. No leaks of anything and the iMacs are due soon. Just can't see it this year personally. We will see. Font think apple would redisgn iMac,iPhone ,MBA & or MBPS all in the same year to be honest. Plus people said the iPad would change ongoing into its 3rd year it's the same. The current iMac design was changed late 2009 that not even 3 years ago

I don't see how making it thinner has any relevance. It's not like a laptop, where every inch and ounce counts. It's a desktop computer that is rarely if ever moved. IMO it's more important to achieve maximum performance on the inside rather than making it thinner on the outside.

i agree, but we are talking about apple here. + how much more can they do performance wise?

dual cpus (like mac pro)? no
desktop gpu? no
sandy bridge extreme? too hot

the thing is, they cant go any higher performance-wise, they will stay the same, and when technology allows, they will make it thinner (maybe even this year if they remove odd)

I welcome a design change but I wouldn't want it to be thinner for the price of heat and performance loss. Apple always surprise us though so :)

The base model absolutely needs an SSD option. 128GB is fine and is also fairly inexpensive.

To release a $1200 computer without an SSD in 2012 would be comical. Sadly, that's exactly what I expect Apple to do.

People want their cake and to eat it too... is that too much to ask? ;)

Any chance Apple ever do the SSD HD option which you could choose simultaneously with two 2TB drives?

I would like to see a small increase in depth to improve the cooling. And some extra vents on the back while they are at it. Then "too hot" will be less of an issue with doing more performance wise.

Everyone just calm down, Digitimes the same company who said new iPad would have been redesigned. Think about it? Pause? Just for a minute.......

Apple will give 'New thinner iMac" with Anti glare, new Ivy bridge processors, Retina display and siri??? Hahaha please.

Its going to end in tears for most of you wishing for so much/ If it does get thinner then that mean NO ODD, and trust me heat will be a problem TV are generally not left on as long as P/C plus don't pack the heavy duty processors iMacs do. I'll pick up one of these if true in 1-2 years. I refuse to be Guinea pig by that time maybe all the problems would of been rectified and all those things Retina etc would be implemented into the mac. For now Apple will not give you, Thin & Retina at same time. So i'll be waiting. upgrading an expensive iMac yearly is not for me sorry.

peace

Why this thin obsession

Who with any sense is worried about the iMac getting any thinner !!! ... Its a desktop ... It doesn't make a blind bit of difference if it gets a little thinner ... Apart from having ( probably ) more of a heat problem
I'm quite happy with the thickness ... All I'm interested in is efficiency and reliability ... And for it to be pretty of course ... But all this thinner thinner business just reminds me of this obsession with scrawny models in fashion and its pretty daft really isn't it :))

Exactly. Why do sites like these keep listening to Digitimes? The only reason they get some things right is because they make up so many rumors. If I am a terrible cook but make pasta every night, just by chance I am going to produce the perfect pasta every once in a while. Digitimes may end up being right sometimes, but it isn't because they actually knew anything.

is this a thread about people's wants or a reasonable discussion about a 2012 imac?

i dont care what you all want, i have my wants too. the only thing i care about is in what form and with what internals 2012 imac will be coming out.

reasonable discussion: this is the perfect timing for apple to slim down imacs. almost 3 years from the last redesign (the redesign cycle is already in place, every cca. 3 years). ivy bridge i7-3770 drop in tdp from 95W to 77W. amd/nvidia drop in tdp about 10W (thats 15-20% lower than previous generation, with 50% boost in performance). probably odd-less. perfect timing.

its finally getting interesting, even if its only digitimes. there were no rumors about imacs since november.

you dont consider a thicker, heavier and retina display a redesign?

if imacs would come with retina display and 2 times the graphics performance, i would call that a redesign. even if it looks the same.

iphone 4s wasnt a redesign, but ipad 3...

Timing

However, the just posted rumours suggest that the thinner iMac will come out in the second half of 2012!!
