Looking at previous updates of the iMac as a guide, we should be getting a re-design this time around. I don't know why people keep saying that there won't be a re-design with such authority. I would say that it is pretty likely.

given the past redesign cycles and reduction in tdp (heat) this year, a redesign is very likely.

furthermore, i think this year, apple (tim cook) has 'need' to show the world they can keep up with the past. thats exactly what i would do in leadership change. do more and even better.

and the 'there wont be a redesign' is just a default setting for people. i've been following a lot of products and there were always at least 50% of people saying that, whether it was a redesign or not. get used to it.

Surround Audio - It's Possible.

First off, from someone who considers themselves a novice audiophile, Apple spent years destroying music quality and "listen-a-bilty." iTunes, for all the wonderful things it gave us, stole a quality music listening experience from several generations.

The crappy earphones provided by apple for their iOS hardware are a sin to the ears, but if you're listening to terribly compressed 128 kbps mp3's, who cares.
Apple does not care about sound. Their entire hardware history is proof of that, not to mention iTunes.

SoftWare to enhance sound on tiny speakers is the same as buying and installing a computer chip that promises 120 extra horsepower in your 1988 Chrysler LeBaron. Its pointless.

Lossless and high-resolution audio files are the best way to listen to music digitally(and iTunes can't even play half of those files), so if you want really good audio, a mac product by itself is not the way to go.

If you look at the Nintendo 3DS, it actually pulls of reasonable sounding Surround Sound using only two speakers. Maybe Apple could pull that off as well?

Don't really agree totally there, I have three panels replaced on my iMac late last month.

For interests sake, the panels are manufactured by LG.

Anway, after two years my the panel started getting dark areas developing on the panel. So I called AppleCare and they organized the panel to be replaced, it took three panels before one that is decent, not perfect, to be fitted.

The 27" iMac needs a resolution bump to make it retina display, IMHO. Why? After owning the new iPad (3), the iMac panel looks a bit fuzzy to be honest. Yes, I realize I'm spoilt rotten.

I'd take a 30" over a retina 27".

furthermore, i think this year, apple (tim cook) has 'need' to show the world they can keep up with the past. thats exactly what i would do in leadership change. do more and even better.

Given the length of product roadmaps, it's unlikely Tim Cook had much to say about whether this iMac would be redesign or not.

Said it before will say it again, There was an article in Dec claiming all Apple products will see redesigns Ipad 3 never, IPhone will most likely and Macbook Pros will get the Air treatment. Now if Apple were to redesign the iMac that means they will look to redesign 3 products in 1 year, So What will Apple have for the customers/Fans to look forward to for next few years???

You never know they could revamp most of the line but i really doubt it, if Apple have neglected Mac Pro and iPod Classic for so long they can do what they want, Personally feel-if there was a redesign Apple could of brought out the new versions with same chipset (Sandy Bridge) as they would of sold like hot cakes .
The wait is because there is no new hardware available makes sense really. plus the current form has only been around from late 2009 so Apple are in know rush really, sooner or later the iMac will reach a place that Apple can take know further. Its good to wait (Not for me) as you don't know what tomorrow may bring, so i prefer to enjoy when i can and be happy i've got a nice machine for my heavy web designing and video editing needs.
Considering its just a computer, Many people don't see their Macs as tools but rather as devices to enhance their self esteem it seems on ,most waiting for new iMacs they go on FB,TWITTER yet are waiting for latest, for bragging rights.
Just my take don't let Apple Control you people!! Its only material goods, that i like as well but have my needs/mind under control. I can't understand the people that upgrade a iMac yearly as you would never see gains and the camping outside Apple is not good.

(posted November 2011)

I made a bad decision last month to wait for the new 2012 iMac. I should have just gotten the 2011 model as I'm dying from all the waiting. Now I can't get the 2011 model because it feels like I wasted my time waiting. Never again...

Brother must be hurtin' now it's April.

Brother must be hurtin' now it's April.

Haha.

I put the money away in August of last year for a new 27" model when the rumors were pointing to a late January update. While I could afford a 2011 model, it would have put me in a cash tight situation so it made since financially to wait until January anyway.

I don't know why people are so impatient. I will happily wait until the new ones are released and I have been sitting on this cash for over 8 months now.

Brother must be hurtin' now it's April.

Kind of a funny story.

During my wait I changed my mind and decided to wait for the new Mac Mini instead, but then after awhile I changed my mind again and now I'm waiting for a new 15" MacBook Pro.

Either way I'm still dying from all the waiting.

Perhaps people are pros or semi pro or don't care about latest and greatest. Waiting 8 months for a computer is comical really, not having a dig. What if something bad happen within that 8 monts (god forbid) which meant you was not able to use an iMac or the cash?

The thing is now some sensible Adults act like the up and coming spoilt kids where they have to have latest hook or by crook and are not satisfied It's a computer dude.

I love Apple products but refuse to let them/it rule me. What example would I set to my kids? If I was walking through the door with apple products every release. Which I could do easy, but there is more important things in like than Apple gratification, I'm my eyes anyway.

Each to there own though if I needed a mac tomorrow I would by tomorrow regardless of upgrade that's just me. I would avoid all the issues with new releases and pick up one in a few years when it's been rectified

Expect to see plent downs from the kids I've touched a nerve with. Sorry I'm different.

I thought I'd never recite this overplayed phrase, but...

Cool story, bro.

Your comments have nothing to do with "what to expect from the new iMac". Just seems like a lot of rampant assumptions, generalizations, and pleasing of your own insecurities by telling everyone on an internet forum how smart of a shopper you are.

Let's get back to the regularly scheduled progam and discuss what people came to this thread to discuss: the 2012 iMac.

Look at it this way, an imac bto costs in my country 4000-5000$, so if im buying one, im hoping it will last forever. It wont, so im doing the best i can for it to last a little bit longer, waiting for the latest generation, especially if its due in a couple of months. For me, its a no-brainer, especially if we see a redesign. I would kill myself if i bought one now to see it redesigned in 2 months, im stuck with it for the next 5 years! And here i am, waiting...

I am a little confused at what your point is.

1) Even though I had the money, the financially smart move at the time was wait until January. God forbid I bought an iMac and then needed the money for car repairs or medical bills.
2) It is also a financially bad move to buy an iMac close to the release of new one. And, there are a number of reasons why waiting is the best choice not taking into account the "latest-and-greatest" argument. See my post here: https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/14364293/
3) People who are waiting are not "ruled" by Apple but by common sense. Your argument would only apply to those who bought a 2011 iMac and are complaining about not having the 2012 iMac yet. Again, under many circumstances right now it is a bad choice to buy a 2011 iMac (regardless of how you feel about Apple).

No one here suggests that people should wait if they need a machine right now. There is no denying the 2011 iMac is an amazing computer, BUT, if you don't need a new computer tomorrow, your best choice is to wait. Also, I am sure this whole skip the first generation argument comes from somewhere, but I have owned multiple first generation Apple products (Unibody MBP, iPod Touch, iPhone, iPad, Dell laptop with the first series of Core 2 Duos) and not had serious issues with any of them. That argument may have worked in the past, but my experience doesn't support it at all (important to note that a forum will disproportionately represent negative experiences).

Then it would probably be just a coincidence if we see everything redesigned this year. Btw ipad upgrade this year is as good as it gets, so you might as well call it a redesign

Iphone
Ipad
Ipod
Macbook pro
Imac
Mac pro

In the same year...

Its getting interesting :)

That's understandable considering where you live, but to kill yourself over it. I know you mean beat your self up with thoughts of why didn't you wait etc. it's only a computer if some really needed his tools for his or her profession and their mac broke down I don't think they would be waiting. For me it's a no brainer I buy when I need. Yes if there is a redesign great I'll see it/ have it sometime in the future as my iMac 2011 is fine

I've seen many of my mate buy there cars as soon as they are announced wait for delivery and have major problem. Me personally I don't buy straight up. The late 2009 iMac I skipped. Only got 2011 iMac after all problems yellow screen etc were ironed out. See my point?

because wireless will offer great lag-free sound.

Actually it should, in the past in the past i would agree with you but now with Airplay , it is possible.
In the past to airplay videos from your iPad to your large TV scenes would have been an impossibility without wires, but hey we have come a long way.
And i think Apple should be the first to do it.

Heya

Do you do any planning at all as a sensible adult??
Just buying anything anyhow smacks of irresponsibility.

Let me tell you, if you learn to save money and make discerning purchases, and discuss with your kids why you do not buy an iteration of iPad/iphone.

That will inculcate into them the desire and awareness and need of a particular product.
Not just buying because you want to.
The guy saved money for 8 months, why is that a bad thing?
For some they can't even save money for 1 month given the circumstances today.

That is decisive planning and the maturity to go thru with it.

given the past redesign cycles and reduction in tdp (heat) this year, a redesign is very likely.

The iMac won't get a redesign because Tim Cook has something to prove. The last few years under Steve Jobs' leadership saw very few radical Mac redesigns; the Mac mini and the MacBook Air were the only two in the last two years.

The reason to expect an iMac change is that the iMac, for the last three designs, has been refreshed after the third rev of the same design. We are on rev #3 of the current design right now, so it's a safe bet. On top of that the reason why Apple will likely redesign the iMac is that the current design has a ton of reliability problems, from the poor heat dissipation, to the screen/graphics problems. Unibody, its chassis may be, but flawed it very much is too.

Given the length of product roadmaps, it's unlikely Tim Cook had much to say about whether this iMac would be redesign or not.

The iMac is pretty low in terms of importance for Apple these days, especially given the continued decline of both Mac and PC desktop sales industry-wide. Steve Jobs even stated it during the introduction of the first generation iPad, Apple is a mobile devices company (primarily, that is). The MacBook Pro, the MacBook Air, the iPad, the iPhone, the iPod touch, and (to a lesser degree) the rest of the iPod line are what is most important to them.

Said it before will say it again, There was an article in Dec claiming all Apple products will see redesigns Ipad 3 never, IPhone will most likely and Macbook Pros will get the Air treatment. That article was silly as is your commentary on it here.

Apple doesn't do radical redesigns unless there is a practical need. The only exception that comes to mind is the iOS device line, which seems to see redesigns once every other refresh. Otherwise, we don't see redesigns unless there are known issues with the design of a current Mac (i.e. the vast improvement of the unibody enclosure in the MacBook Pro over the 2007-08 models, or the polycarbonate unibody MacBook not having the top case problems that the pre-unibody polycarbonate MacBooks had/have). We will soon see a redesign of the current iMac because the current iMac design has a lot of issues, plus it's at the point where they usually redesign it anyway. This is also why I'll contend that we won't see a MacBook Pro redesign this calendar year (as there are no problems with the current enclosure and the last design on that machine lasted six years before the current design and we're barely up to the four year mark).

...Intel + Windows 7 can already do this with something called WiDi, short for wireless display. I think it's part of every 2nd gen Core iX chip, you just need (Windows only) drivers to enable it.

Seems like you hate cables so much, huh? .. AirPlay is cool and nifty feature, but think of it this way.

Can you use AirPlay for serious and prolonged music listening/movie watching session? How long an iPad/iPhone/Macbook battery can withstand AirPlay session? 4, or 5 hours? Or much less than that?

In the end, to make it worthwhile and last longer, you still need charging/power cable from your iPad/iPhone/Macs while streaming AirPlay content to your Apple TV. And because you still need cable, why not get something like iPad A/V digital cable, connect it to HDMI/audio receiver and also iPad dock so it can charge while playing content RELIABLY via HDMI cable?

Plus AirPlay still has lag problems when it comes to display mirroring and playing games from iPad to your TV or anything involving high bandwidth video. It's cool but far from reliable. I only use it occasionally for short movie watching and some casual listening.

I don't mind having a few cables around to get a 100% reliable performance rather than going complete wireless, super clean/neat and hang my neck on WiFi or bluetooth service quality, Or even rely on battery for wireless speakers. You're screwed when it runs out and you badly need it.

It's not that I hate wireless technology, I use WiFi, bluetooth connectivities too, but I also have wired solution out and ready, so I have backups when something goes wrong with those wireless techies. I wouldn't hang my neck only on wireless.

Not exactly. Your comparison is the logical equivalent of "My buddy has a peanut allergy. I have seen him have an allergic reaction. I am not going to eat tomatoes because I might have an allergic reaction.

As for those hoping for a redesign, I am a little skeptical. I would think we would have more rumors about said redesign by this point. Just look at the MBP redesign rumors which have been going on for months. You would think that since both iMacs and MBPs will be released relatively around the same time, we would have heard more about a redesigned iMac by now. I don't really mind either way. While it would be great to have a slightly thicker thunderbolt display design (i.e. no chin), I wouldn't mind having the current design one bit.

Same thing happened to the current Mac Mini though. Absolutely no rumors of a redesign and then...Boom.

Anyone think we'll see an ultra-thin, entry level iMac with intel integrated 4000 series graphics. Literally paper thin and just the screen, so to speak. Would look good and make sense as an entry level iMac for most users (IMO).
