According to the Mac Buyer's Guide, the new iMacs have been released in May, in July, March, April, etc.

So there's no real solid month the iMac gets refreshed, so the cycle count is probably a better indication. Having said that, Ivy Bridge is expected to come out in April of this year, so that could be another factor. At the same time, Intel and Apple have been known to have a relationship in which Intel will let Apple use new chips exclusively before they're officially released.

In other words, no one really knows. The safest bet is to give it a month or two. If refreshes are coming, rumors will pop up or supply chains will be constrained, leading to shipping delays in current iMac. These are good indicators.

ok, thanks. I can wait a month or two...just don't want to wait 5 months if its going to be May.

I would bet on a $999 iMac with integrated graphics, now that won't suck as bad as they do on Sandy Bridge.

The current iMac will suit me just fine, but the computer we have now is far from broken.

I was just going by the buyer's guide which indicates updates are coming at around 275 days, and we are apparently less than a month away from that.

So I'll just wait another month, or two at the most, and see what pans out.

I'm sure we'll have more information in the next two months, and if everything is completely silent that will reinforce my decision to buy current instead of new.

People should stop guessing and confusing people

1 month from now? 2 months from now? wont happen

The iMac wont be updated before intel releases ivy bridge, and thats april (soonest) so you want see a new imac before april-summer timeframe.

Doesn't Intel offer Apple new chipsets before they're released to other manufacturers? It's happened before, hasn't it? It could happen again.

I'm currently using an early 2007 MBP and it is well and truly on its last legs. I nearly upgraded before Christmas, but I'm waiting to see if there are any announcements at CES about an iMac 2012 refresh.

The waiting is killing me, though. :eek:

I'm unsure about this trend towards touch screen desktops. It seems like it would just be a big iPad. :confused:

Your arm would wear out... maybe for playing around but for serious work... no.I want a 6 core 3.33 and then I can sell my Mac Pro.

Apple has put theirselves in a funny spot with the iMac.

Why have an ssd option when t-bolt is faster and offers instant replacement if the drive fails.

this is no longer for sale but it is faster then any internal ssd apple offers and can run fan less .

http://www.ebay.com/itm/16069266617...X:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1560.l2649#ht_2237wt_1371

this is conflict one.

next glossy screen no need to explain how many people hate it

conflict two

optical drive have it or not how many posts over this.

conflict three

next no blu ray a cousin to number three but still a problem

conflict four

usb 3 is a complete no brainer ivy bridge allows it

it also would let you use the external with pc's, knowing apple they won't have one !

conflict five

screen size 21.5 plus 27 and the rumor that apple want to make tv's this is a huge problem for lots of users how it gets resolved will be interesting. do they go to 27 37 46? or what.

conflict six

lack of a real ht/gaming machine hurts sales of apple.

for 1400 to 1600 an amazing ht/gaming machine can be built. You can use it with any size tv. I have a 46 inch led sony in my ht it is 1080p apple refuses to address the ht/gamer person that wants a big tv 46 to 70 inch as a ht/gaming setup

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.771104

this is a link to a ht/gaming machine for about 1268. The video card is short but add 150 more for a better card and add 150 for an ssd and for 1575.00 you have a really good setup that will slap an iMac silly and allows any size tv! BTW these case is;

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811280021

about 5 by 17 by 15 put it on your ht rack and you are set.

this is a big conflict for me as it has everything I want except osx snow or lion.

So conflict seven is a big one for me. btw the only mac that can do what this machine does is a mac pro. The 2500 base model is not good enough to match this machine.

The most interesting problem is apple is whaling with iPads iPods iPhones

mostly all a form of crack when compared to real computers. I have seen commercials of people watching a movie on an iPad on their couch in the living room with the 52 inch tv turned off. Think about that does it make sense nooo! This reminds me of the graffiti in NYC in the 80's 'crack is whack'. It is kind of a subculture of real computer users vs mobile toy users. Really good for apple's bottom line. Not good for people that don't use mobile gear much.

this is conflict eight

I am interested in how apple solves some of the issues. I owned a 2009 machine it was a nice iMac I would like to get one again but I will need to wait for the 2012 machine just to see what they build.
People don't play games who own Macs... they are making music, video, and graphics or scientific... just go get a used MBOX to play games... why a $2k Mac? Most who use Macs have been using the Mac for years to do their craft...

Plenty of people do play games on their macs. The sales figures on the mac app store are proof of this. Unless of course people are only buying the games and then not playing them. That makes sense.

Next Apple News Event?

Doesn't Apple typically have news events sometime after CES? It seems logical that they might announce the ipad3 and imac there..

Makes little to no sense to reveal two products at a media event.

1. you want to to focus on one product, and create hype around it.
2. istuff and mac stuff isnt revealed together.
3. you will most likely never see imac being mentioned at a media event, since it doesnt deserve a media event spotlight. Just perhaps if its a complete redesign.
4. It will just be updated with a news item on apple's site if its just a spec bump

True, yes, but higher end mobile gpu's from amd/nvidia has not been mentioned yet. It just says it will come q1 2012, so therefor i dont think it will happen in the next two months.

We will know more after CES though, and can speculate more then

this is wrong. Why must I play on a mac pro in order to play a game on a big screen?

this is correct. this is true. Until this year I never owned any windows gear.

I now have a low cost laptop and I have windows on two mac mini servers. Why because I prefer snow leopard to lion I also prefer windows 7 to lion.

I also have decided that my ht with great sound and a 46 inch sony tv would be great for a htpc/gaming rig.

cost is 1200. shop around for a tuner for 50 you are at 1250 .

add hdds and ssds one at a time. this is a killer setup. you will need a good graphics card, but you don't have to rush.

the only piece of gear apple sells that can match this is a mac pro. I owned a 2010 hex core mac pro with the 5870 card cost more then 3700. (although I modded a 2010 quad and my cost was under 3k)

apple neglects this section of users.

now I am piece by piece buying the parts for this system and playing with more and more windows 7 . oh well.

NOW i can't decide to wait for the new iMac /TV maybe it is good maybe not or the new mac pro or get a 2010 mac pro. Most likely I will wait until april and buy an intel i7 3770k and a nice as rock MOBO along with a nice htpc case/psu.

The parts i grabbed can go in macs and I am just complaining about apples neglect in the htpc/gamer rig area. BTW if anyone has built a nice htpc/gamer please pm me with how to do it or a good site.

When is CES and what is it?

An event announcing new electronic related stuff I'm assuming.

"On the desktop front, Intel told partners that its Ivy Bridge architecture will be delayed until the second quarter of 2012. Apple will likely refresh its desktop Mac lineup with 2012 Ivy Bridge chipset."

iMac 2012 might be coming later than we think.

Source: http://9to5mac.com/2012/01/10/ces-20...k-air-killers/

For those who are wondering what "Second Quarter" means...

* 1st Quarter: October 1, 2011 - December 31, 2011
* 2nd Quarter: January 1, 2012 - March 31, 2012
* 3rd Quarter: April 1, 2012 - June 30, 2012
* 4th Quarter: July 1, 2012 - September 30, 2012

So I'm going to wager April at the earliest before we see a 2012 iMac with the Ivy Bridge chipset, but who knows...

Interesting, but I think most people were logically thinking May to begin with.

Really? I thought first quarter would be from January 1, 2012 - March 31, 2012
Since January being the first month of the year, and it would start from there...

Huh... live a little, learn a little. haha

What I would like to see is a boost in speed from cpu and gpu. But I would also like to see a decrease in price haha. I looked at the ram prices on the apple website and just by looking at it, I don't save anything if i choose 16gbs. i still pay the same for each 4gbs of ram i pick. Usually the more you buy the more you save. ='[ . I do hope i see a price reduction but pretty sure I know that's not going to happen.

I would also like to see, as it was mentioned earlier, a wireless keyboard with the num'pad. And something called Wi-Fi electricity, so we dont need to recharge the batteries in our mice and keyboards.

New iMac 2012

Could These Be Some New Features:
Blu-ray Drive
USB 3.0
SSD Standard
Intel Ivy Bridge
Video Input Support for 21.5 inch
HDMI Input
Optical Output

Blu-ray Drive - doubt it, but always a possibility. I think it is more likely that the optical drive will go away all together.
USB 3.0 - No way, Apple will push Thunderbolt to the death.
SSD Standard - This doesn't really make sense yet with current prices and capacities.
Intel Ivy Bridge - that's a given
Video Input Support for 21.5 inch - not sure
HDMI Input - probably not, but maybe HDMI output?

Just a thought, but maybe they will get rid of the big aluminum housing under the monitor to make the iMac more similar in size and look to the 27" Cinema Display? Identical displays next to each other, but one is an iMac and one is just a display? That would look sexy.
