I have modest predictions for this round:

Same form factor and price.
Antiglare coating.
Ivy Bridge and USB 3.0
Up to 1GB 7750M in the 21" model, 2GB 7970M in the top 27" model.
Possible change from the SATA-II Toshibas to the SATA-III Samsung 830 as the BTO SSD.

(Frankly, as long as the 21" gets USB 3.0 and a 1GB 6950M or better, I'm sold.)

I pretty much agree with what you have said. I will be buying the 27". I just wish this would come out in time for Diablo 3 (May 15th). So what's a realistic date? Early June since there is no official release date for the 7970m.. :/

Ha! Same here. I'm probably going to have the collector's edition Diablo box taunting me from the shelves for a whole month. No way I'll be able to play it on my current iMac (17" 4,1).

Still, both Dell/Alienware and Samsung have both announced 79xxm-based laptops back in mid-late march, but no shipping dates short of Q2.

Given Tim Cooks's supply line strangleholds, I think May is possible, but June is likely. (If only for the sake of my sanity)

First off, like everyone here, ( unless some fancy high up apple employee monitors such forums and laughs out in Cupertino at all these ideas) knows when Apple is releasing iMac or macbook pro, even though it will be soon-ish.

However, I looked on the buyers guide iMac at past dates/ months- Apple has not waited a full 12 months before let alone 13 months if were saying June is the update time. Now yes Intel has delayed chips again so I am considering that, but regardless the iMac has been revised before the 12 month mark. I do not think there is enough evidence or rumors suggesting major design change to the iMac, thus there is no need to do a media event or WWDC unveiling of a refresh. Also, I think WWDC is again going to be majority software focus, Mountain Lion, iOS etc and some hardware, but more likely portables or rebirth Mac Pro.

That being said, my firm guess would be that the iMac will be a overnight quiet refresh unless WWDC media invite gets announced teasing some sort of mac hardware / desktop event for iMac and mac pro. ) * unlikely IMO. So with May being 12 months regardless of the date, I firmly believe the iMac will be refreshed anytime from April 25th ( early apple release before intel formal announcement) but thats likely not happening, so any tuesday or wednesday leading up to May 23rd. Thus leaving a few weeks gap until WWDC.

Be Honest

Perhaps we all need to start looking into alternatives to the new iMac if they don't pull their finger out and get on with it ... This is just getting tedious now ... Get this seasons version out guys ... Or lets all go hackintosh and bum to apple :)

This heat problem

I'm actually beginning to think its not a good idea to buy a new iMac ... There is so much talk of overheating that maybe iMacs ain't so great after all !!

well if it has an overheating problem, a problem like that would arise very quickly/immediately (not over time). therefore it will still be on apple's warrenty and you can swap it out no problem

if by "so much talk" you mean you read a few responses here on macrumors take into consideration exactly how many imacs were sold in any given time in contrast to the amount of people having problems. any computer will have issues, don't take the word of a few to mean the whole product line is bunk.

I've always taken all the negative iMac feedback in MR with a grain of salt. As you say, if you look at the big picture, these are relatively non issues in an otherwise, highly successful, high volume selling product line.

It doesn't start getting tedious until all of the various components are available from their manufacturers, and Apple hasn't put out a product. Right now we're just watching the clock tick, knowing that the last week in April is the absolutely bare minimum we could expect to hear an announcement.

Also agree that this will come quietly in the night.. the only warning we will see is 3rd party retailers running out of stock.

PC died

I've been patiently waiting for this refresh to make my first ever Mac purchase. My dad raised me on an Apple IIe and Mac SE, but then inexplicably switched to PCs in the '90s. My wife and I have iPhones, our wireless is an AirPort, and we run the Apple TV. I'm ready to pull the trigger to make the return to Apple complete.

Today my HP desktop died. We'll have to get by on my work laptop until the refresh happens (hopefully soon?).

Mountain Lion, bigger screen (maybe 2012 or 2013), 35% faster, ivy chip yea thats all i got :)

They are great what are you saying! They work much better than the windows, faster last longer and you can install windows on it! So much better thats why they cost more.:)

I'll tell the people out there why mac is better. {ahem} It runs faster, lasts longer, u can install windows on there too, very easy to work, comes out new versions in a while but all different. Its like a whole new world that you step into for the people's who have not swiched to macs yet. It's kind of expensive (a bit),
because its better than all the windows. Ask people here and you'll see why its better and you will find more information. But remember this here that i have typed, is not to tell you to run out the store and buy one. Its just to tell you how it is better and if you like it you should buy it. For more information ask the people on this forum and go to www.apple.com. Fyi, mountain lion is coming out this summer. I hope they will make another imac with the new mountain lion in it that will be great because i am planning to buy one. So yea. Bye:apple:

Why the IMAC need better speakers ...

1) Look at the Mac book Air...Do you carry around another set of speakers to LISTEN?

2) It is supposed to be all in one concept. Apple vision is just one component the IMAC, with wireless keyboard and wireless mouse or pad. ..No more wires to another peripheral, especially not to a speaker system with sub woofer.

3) Apple is all about progression . And the iMac has had an amazing changes thru out its lifecycle EXCEPT FOR SOUND.

4) It is software not hardware limitation...not all of it.
If you don't believe me, check out HEAR or BOOM...you WILL be amazed.
Download the software and USE it..

That said, if Apple really cannot make a better speakers or optimize the software, BUY OUT the company selling HEAR....

Ok last thought, Apple can make the speakers wireless? thus removing the chin....thought's

Heya

First off, retina display for the iMac...WOW...but the power consumption would be crazy..imagine the heat from the PSU.

Secondly isn't Apple care for just 2 years? how did you manage to convince Apple to change yours after the warranty is over??

Thank you for introducing me to Hear.

Newbie !!!

Um actually I'm by no means a newbie ... I've worked solely on Macs for over a decade now ... And macs sure have become more popular ... But they are not so ahead of other pcs any more ... They are still,so far, much less prone to virus's as we know ... But that is about it now really ... Now it is really due to it being a pretty fashion item
I will probably buy a new iMac when they get round to releasing them ... But after that it's going to be self builds and through to TV for me ... Can go the hackintosh route obviously ... We'll see

Really looking forward to the new imac now....

I think it is likely that the following is going to happen now though

Some kind of 'retina' display with anti reflection / glare / matte
GPU - 7000 series
Ivy Bridge and USB 3.0 support

Redesign - I doubt it, same as current range with the chin still on. This would be unfortunate. Chin needs to go now.

Superdrive - cant call this, could be removed - or not. Would prefer it removed.

SSD - lets hope so and make it user upgradable.

If the first 4 are done, I will be buying my first apple computer.

If not, I will upgrade my 2 year old pc with an SSD and HD 7750 or 7770. My monitor is 8 years old, but it is so old now I am willing to wait for the 'next gen' range of retina display for mac and pc.

I don't think there will be a Retina display on the new iMac from what I've read. Some anti-glare coating would be a huge improvement though. I think you'll get your wish for the first few items on your list. Anti-glare, 7000 series GPU (which may hold up the release), Ivy Bridge with USB 3. I'm indifferent to the removal of the ODD. My first knee-jerk reaction was to say "No way! don't take the ODD!!", but then I thought about how much I really use it. Not much at all. However, if there is no good reason to take it out, they shouldn't. Meaning if they don't utilize that space for something else. No need to make the iMac thinner.

Same, all my pro apps are bought online now, and have for the past 4 years. All the games I'd like to buy now are through Steam, the App store or Blizzard, which do local DRM and allow cloud-based re-downloads for backup. Most music I buy is through iTunes, and I prefer to watch Blu-Ray on my PS3, not my iMac.

Unfortunately, I also still buy the occasional music CD, and have about a dozen older games that I'd still like to play on my new Mac which use DVD DRM. It would also be nice to backup the downloads from Adobe, since they tend to bury their old product re-downloads.

Another reason I think we'll see the end of the ODD — I bet there are more AppleCare claims for dead Superdrives than anything else on iMacs. Jobs was right when he said mounting optical drives vertically is a bad idea when the angelpoise iMac was launched.

The only thing that will make me regret buying my iMac a month ago, is a super hi-res screen of some kind. That would make me sad.

I wouldn't expect much else to be a huge upgrade over my current setup, but I could be wrong.

+1. I can stand everything but a quadrupeling of the resolution :) If that happens, im selling no matter what the loss.

Expect a later date than you hope for. In fact, add 2 months. If you want it now, it won't be out until June 10th or so. If you want it by May 15th, July 15th.

If you don't want it, expect it to never be released.

Im pegging May, if not early June. Makes more sense, iMacs need a refresh, macbook pro got a bump in october thus cab buy time until core i3 processors are ready in june for the rest of the notebook.s iMac never went past or to 12 month cycles. Also digitizes has a crap record July is too far, i think they want to get their items out fast, at least two model lines for 2nd financial quarter.

again, next following monday the processors come out, then tuesday apple has a financial call. wouldn't doubt a product to come out around then.

NO MATTE, museum glass is great.
