I don't see any great technical hurdles to overcome as retina computers would have a lower PPI than phones / tablets.

It depends on how it would be implemented, but I can see a problem of having more pixels to push around in total, despite the lower PPI.

I doubt that. What would be the point for Samsung/LG if nothing supported it?

Apple have lead the charge for retina on phones and tablets. The presence of HiDPI in Lion suggests they intend to do the same on computers.

That, and although Apple is pushing Retina, Apple isn't the one making displays. We'd hear news about those two companies dealing with HiDPI displays before we'd see the announced 27" HiRes model. We knew the iPad 3 was going Retina a good week or two before it was announced.

We knew the iPad 3 was going Retina 6 months before introduction

but, nevertheless, we heard those rumors about 32' retina, and power and thinness arent an issue, only price is

Exactly! If the iMac were going Retina, we'd know about it for sure if only by the slip of the manufacturer's tongue.

Price may be an issue, but the iPad's Retina didn't raise the price much.

how many ipads apple sells and how many imacs? economy of scale

@lifeguard90: sorry, read your post wrong

a little off topic, but seems like the best place to ask.
I have a chance to get the current iMac with 30% discount. Should i take it? how much do the prices drop on current iMacs when the new ones are out?

Yes, but increasing retina from to iPad is what 6.x inches, not an extra 24

I have no clue what you guys are talking about. :)

I am not supporting Retina nor want Retina in an iMac. I was commenting a while back on another poster that said the iMac won't have Retina in this revision and I agreed with him/her mainly because we would have long since heard about it from other sources.

The iPad's retina didn't raise the price at all . . .

That's a great deal. Good computer for the price.

Refurb units are typically 10-20% off sticker.

Actually, yes, that's probably a safe buy. The refurb prices (which includes unsold stock of older models) tend to run in the 12%-15% range under MSRP. If you can get any Mac at 30% off MSRP and it's no older than the previous generation, don't let the price stop you from buying, in other words. Just make sure it meets your needs functionally, which any 2011 model probably will.

thanks, i'm done with the waiting game.

What's the likely reason for the delay at this point? It's not Mountain Lion -that wouldn't be a profitable move. More likely:
1. iMac comes out.
2. Mountain Lion $9.99 for people that have 2012-model Macs.

That's what happened with SL in 2009.

Could Apple just be building supply stock before the announcement?

Here's a question

Have apple ever refreshed the complete range of computers in one go? If they were going to do this then they might hold off until WWDC. I know iMac, Mac pro and MacBook pro are all due to be upgraded. What would apple stores be like if they did? Horrendously busy I'm guessing!

Free sounds better to me for ML, but $10 fine just not $30

This is what I'm thinking too at the moment.

makes sense 1-3 weeks

i don't ever remember apple doing a all mac blitz, and doubt they would esp with iOS excitement now too

They don't usually. Doesn't mean they aren't this time, of course.

Last summer we got iMacs and MBPs in May, then Airs and Minis in July. Then a silent MBP spec bump in November.

Back in 2010 we got the MBP early in April, then the Mini in June, then iMac in July, the uh, "current gen" Mac Pro in August, and we waited until October for the new Air.

In 2009 it was a mess, with iMacs refreshing in both March and October, and other models were all over the map.

The only thing we can really say we know is that every day that goes by makes it more likely that a refresh will happen... but there's no way to say how soon that might be, other than educated guessing and speculation based on tangential factors, since Apple ain't talking.

Lion was offered for free for new Mac owners within 30 days of the release, because Apple couldn't charge $9.95 for shipping and handling since Lion was digital release only.

Mountain Lion will be just the same, if of course, they continue this tradition.
