I wrote this in another thread although I've tweaked it a little:

  • 21.5 inch $1199
  • Intel Core i5 3450S 2.8GHz w/ 3.5GHz Turbo
  • AMD Radeon HD 7730M 1GB

  • 21.5 inch $1499
  • Intel Core i5 3470 2.9GHz w/ 3.6GHz Turbo > i7 3770S 3.1GHz w/ 3.9GHz Turbo
  • AMD Radeon HD 7750M 1GB

  • 27 inch $1699
  • Intel Core i5 3470 2.9GHz w/ 3.6GHz Turbo
  • AMD Radeon HD 7750M 1GB > 7950M 2GB

  • 27 inch $1999
  • Intel Core i5 3470 3.2GHz w/ 3.6GHz Turbo > i7 3770 3.4GHz w/ 3.9GHz Turbo
  • AMD Radeon HD 7970M 2GB

(Each with a 1TB HDD except for the $1199 iMac which will have a 500GB HDD, and each with 4GB 1600MHz RAM.)

I hope somehow they've managed to implement a "retina" display on each of these, that'd be amazing.

I believe the first one will stick with 512MB GDDR5 rather than the 1GB.
Also, why not the i7 3.5GHz CPU that will be out for the last one BTO? Just curious..

Everything else is pretty much spot on!

Yeah, you're right about that. I think we'll definitely see 512MB in the first model. The i7 3770K 3.5GHz is an unlocked processor unlike the i7 3770 3.4GHz. I'm not sure why the unlocked version has a 0.1GHz faster base clock speed, but I doubt Apple will use the unlocked version but I may be wrong. (According to Wikipedia the i7 3770K is $40 more than the i7 3770.)

I'm pretty sure it's a typo because Turbo works by increasing the frequency by a given amount of CPU multipliers. For all other i5 CPUs (except low-end), the maximum amount of bins is four. However, for i7-3700, it would have to be five to achieve the stated Turbo of 3.9GHz. Doesn't make any sense.

I suspected that but wasn't sure. It sounds like that's the case. I'm really looking forward to the new releases. I may sell my 2011 iMac and get a newer model so I can max out a few more games... might even splurge for the 27 inch model.

Is the release date still somewhere between march and may? leaning more towards may as the ipad will probably be released in march.

How certain are the new iMacs for the Spring? My parents are looking to pick up a new desktop because my sister moved out a few months back and they have no computer in the house and they want to be able to Skype with the Grandkids. I told them to hold off a few months and wait for the new iMacs but I don't want them to have to wait until summer.

Then buy now. You will be waiting till May-June.

You, me, us, no one ever knows when the new next Apple product will be released. It's all about speculation+rumors.
With that said, if your parents want to Skype, then have you considered an iPad? I don't want to be rude, but my grandparents, who are at their late 60s and 70s LOVE using Skype on iPad, compared to the iMac. They say it's easier to use than the Mac mini+24 inch display.

Thanks but they don't want an iPad, they need a desktop for home use also like Word, photos, internet, blah, blah. They aren't in a huge rush to get the computer but I was hoping they would be out around the March/April timeframe.

One of these threads (might even have been this one) posted a decent confirmation that the Ivy Bridge chips would be out the 1st week in April. You can expect the new iMacs anywhere between 2 weeks prior to that and 6 weeks after, depending on where Apple is with the iMac development and what arrangement they've made with Intel.

For less heavy usage, there isn't a compelling reason to hold out.

I was just coming to the decision to buy an iMac, until I checked whether the new ones were due. So now I need to decide how obsolete I'll be in three months if I go ahead and buy one next week. ARGH.

Screen Sizes for new imacs

sorry if this was already asked or answered. But is it likely that the 2012 imacs will have 21.5 and 27 inch screens or will it be changing to 24 and 27 inch screens.:apple:
I like the idea of a imac 27 for web design but the 21.5 is more in my budget my current 15inch win7 laptop is too cramped so anyways what is the best?

Honestly, no one apart from Apple knows. All we can do is speculate.
If you want to talk about the current iMacs, then the 21.5" will be a breath of fresh air compared to a 15" laptop. It's what you can afford, get down to an Apple store and see what you are comfortable with.
If you really want the 27", save up!

Can somebody explain to me what's so special about USB 3 and what it does? I see it constantly mentioned

Transfer speeds would be greatly improved over USB 2.0, also correct me if I'm wrong but I believe a USB3 port allows more power through the port.

Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 can co-exist, it doesnt have to be one or the other. I also believe that mankind.... and fish can co-exist peacefully ;)

I get it now, Im a gay fish don't worry about me guys... IM GOING HOME!

Would be nice to have more Ports on the back.. maybe even a cover for people who don't intend to use the extra ports and want to keep the back looking clean, Unlike me who has every port filled up with extension ports and just abut everything you can imagine plugged into them ;D

Maybe I'm late to the party on this (and I apologize if I am), but it looks like Apple isn't allowing graphic card updates on the current version of iMacs as they were in the past. You can't go from the 6750 to the 6770 anymore. Perhaps they're slowing down the level of customization on the current models in anticipation of stocking components and manufacturing the upcoming models?

Just a presumptuous and optimistic line of thinking... Here's to hoping the new models come out before Diablo 3 :D

You never could. The 6770 always started on the $1499 model first.

Thanks. Yes of course no one but apple knows.... just wondering what people think... I am just trying to figure out if the 27 inchs is much more than 21.5 to warrent the extra money.... it would be awesome tho if apple ups the base model to 24 inchs in the next refresh... and replaces the current config with a 1tb hd and 64ssd for the os and app store apps:cool:

So when is the update happening?

Buyers guide says don't buy , and I want imac soon.

Also will the new iMac have the new display technology? (sharp tech)

24" 1920x1200 screens are over, they all became 22.x" and 21.5" 1080p screens so the manufacturers can get more screens out of a production run. With the increased pixel density of the 21.5 and 27 iMacs plus the MacBook Airs models, plus iPhone 4, it's not likely that there will be another 24" iMac.
