Since when did this become a yearly update device and why? Every model I’ve had still works fine . My parents have my HD and original 4k and I have the two newest ones but they all pretty much work identical. The processor bump between the last few makes no dif in real world use….And with how good the latest smart tvs have gotten they have less and less need to exist

I've had an Apple TV for several years now and love it, except for one major thing.

I recently upgraded my sound system to Atmos and it turns out that tvOS does not support lossless audio. This is really disappointing from a product that is supposed to be premium. I ended up buying a janky Android TV box to play at full fidelity. Apple is aware of the demand for lossless bitstreaming and has thus far ignored it. I would happily upgrade to a new model if it had this.

What I want:
  • UWB on the remote for full Find My functionality
  • Better resolution scaling, motion interpolation, and HDR tone mapping algorithms
  • Support for lossless audio formats
  • HDMI Source-Based Tone Mapping (SBTM)
  • Apple designed gaming controller

I had to look up to see when I purchased my ATV. It is the 64 GB version purchased in late 2021.
Now it has 128 GB? What for?
I learned the hard way it is not possible to store any data on the device.
No pictures. No music. No movies.
Now the 64 GB version lacks Ethernet. So like iMac, Ethernet is an option.
ATV should have access to apps just like my iPad does.
The Safari browser could be handy sometimes.
It looks like The Roku Channel is not going to become available to ATV.
I like the rechargeable remote. Also like how none of the important buttons are on the side.
The Roku remote has volume and mute on the upper-right side. Annoying at best.
Having the Siri button on the side is fine. You can't press it by accident.
I have ATV, Roku and Fire TV Stick.
Roku's screen is so simple.
ATV is not bad but takes effort to learn.
Fire TV's interface is terrible, but has a browser.
Roku sort of did, but not anymore.
Both Roku and Fire TV has useful apps (phone/tablet) to make things easier without the remote.
ATV could do better.
In true Apple fashion, can't screen mirror except with another Apple device.
iPad's aspect ratio, does not fit ATV screen.
I do not have a smartphone, nor do I plan to.
Do have the various streaming devices and both iPad and Android.
iPad is compatible with all apps so far. Android, not so much.
I don't post all that often, but when I do, it gets wordy.

It wouldn't surprise me if we see USB-C added to the AppleTV box itself, my guess is new processor ability to support a USB-C webcam (or Apple specific webcam with support for Center Stage), along with a $99 entry price point.

I don't expect to see an increase in storage; unless they release a AppleTV Pro model at a higher cost with a renewed focus on top tier gaming titles. I wouldn't expect the device to go head to head with the PS5 or XBox, but I could see it be a step above the Switch.

I hope the next ATV4K has active cooling and larger storage options.

Apple said the A15 Bionic chip's increased power efficiency allowed for the fan to be removed in the current Apple TV, resulting in the device having a more compact design that is around 12% thinner and around 50% lighter than the previous model.
The fan removal was a mistake if the ATV is used for games. The A15 ATV4K3 thermal throttles with some games, so much so that the A12 ATV4K2 actually outperforms the A15 on on some games in terms of sustained GPU performance.

I have a heatsink with a fan on top of my ATV4K3, sad that it needs it.

Games. It only takes less than a dozen large Apple Arcade games to fill your 64GB version.

If all you do is streaming apps? Then yeah, even 32GB is overkill.

So glad we are getting more regular updates after the eternity between 2017 and 2021. I’d take a new Apple TV every year or two. Even if it’s just a newer chip, I’ll gladly take it.

I’ve had every Apple TV (and currently have 2 2015 which later became HD, one 4K, one 2nd gen 4K, and one 3rd Gen 4K). The newest one is much faster. Getting a new chip every year or two is something I would buy every time.

And in a multi TV situation, just trickle down the others and sell the oldest one. Offsets some of the cost of the new one. And now new ones have gone down in price, so it’s even better.

Also, since they removed active cooling and reduced size, 3nm will be a great move in Apple TV.

I bought the ATV4K 2017 when it was released and today it still is the only source on our TV. For almost 6 years it still works perfectly smooth. Money well spent IMHO. All the good content providers support it. Unless a new ATV is significantly more powerfull, I don't see a reason to upgrade yet.

For starters, the current 4K is significantly faster than the first gen and second gen 4K. The 1st gen 4K had HDR, second gen HDR10, and 3rd gen HDR10+. With TV’s that support the standard, it makes a big difference.

Well, does HDR10 or HDR10+ really matter? Dolby Vision still offers the better picture encoding quality at this moment. Most TV's do support it. The ATV 4K 2017 does support HDR10, but on our TV (panasonic) it doesn't look that great. I know, milage does vary on other brands.

A seriously much faster CPU/GPU in a new ATV would be most beneficial for games, though. Some would be very happy when the visual details in games reach or even match Playstation or Xbox quality. And how about 8K support for those of use with gigantic TV screens? 😂

I'm not so sure that a new model is necessary. I'm all for better/faster, but the reality is that these things are robust, long-lived utility devices. My Apple TV is 7.5+ years old and has been in nearly daily use since then. The only change is that I sold the original remote and updated to the latest (USB-C) version.
I feel where you’re coming from, but the A15 model is noticeably faster. if you have a dual HomePod setup, I feel the speed with Siri requests with them. Thats marginal compared to the overall snappiness of the OS, which a surprising improvement, even compared to the A12 model.

Guess I don't understand Apple Arcade. None of the apps impress me, except The Oregon Trail.
Because of the monthly fee, I didn't think Apple Arcade apps could be downloaded.
Figured it was all in the cloud.
I've never tried Apple Arcade.
(My iPad is 32 GB and quite full. No data, just apps.)

Honestly if they really want Apple TV+ numbers to take off, they should not worry about the price as much on the Apple TV. It's already at a huge premium over competitors. I just checked Amazons 4k competitor, and it's $54.99. (I don't know how it runs.) As an Apple user who loves my Apple TV, I'd probably pay the same price, but as an investor and from the business side, they would make more money long term by increasing their market share, and thereby increasing services revenue. I think they should price the 4K at $79 and the regular at $49. They would sell a lot more. When I worked in the store at Apple, that was everyone's hang up, the price, when they could get a different 4k device much cheaper.

And if they could just get the TV App sorted out, it would be much better at keeping people engaged in the TV app itself. For example, instead of or in addition to the up next, have a favorites section for repeat shows. I like the idea of up next, but I hate having to go back and find a show or movie I watched that I might want to watch over and over (we all have those haha.), and then have one for Hulu, Disney+, Peacock, etc. I know you can see that a show can play in those apps when you go to them, but it would be nice if you knew before hand what shows were within those apps. If that makes sense.

Meh.

Some seem to have given up on this platform. The BBC iplayer app here in the UK doesn't even do subtitles!

The only thing I'd really want other than a little extra speed is a way to reassign or disable the side Siri button. Unfortunately I don't see Apple doing that because they really want people to use Siri, but it's annoying to constantly accidentally trigger it.

I have the latest model 4K, and the thing that bugs me the most is the remote. Not sure what I'm doing wrong, but it get's "stuck". Like I'll be pressing down on the wheel and suddenly, it just sticks in that position and scrolls down to the bottom even when my finger is lifted. Sometimes it doesn't register when I click left or right. I try "swiping" it and it will work about 70% of the time. It's really frustrating.

I thought it was the remote, so i paired my older remote to it, and it's still doing the same thing. So I put my older 4k model back and it's STILL doing the same thing. The remote app on my phone works fine without those problems. But it's very frustrating. Either the keys on the wheel-pad are gunked up or whatever, I don't know. When it actually works, I love that remote. But lately it's been a total pain.

I just want bitstream audio and a decent profiling system. That’s it. And it all software based. Should be easy.

Apple TV+ is on every built-in tv streaming setup there is. My parents Vizio have it. My roku has it.

I wonder how many Apple TV 4K owners actually watch 4K content. I subscribe to a bunch of apps and refuse to pay a premium price just to increase the resolution to 4K (darn you Netflix). It's nice when it is included as free iTunes upgrades or on apps like Disney+ and Prime Video. I rock an Apple TV HD on my 1080p bedroom TV and Apple TV 4K (1st gen) on my living room 4K TV. The 4K TV was a budget model so the HDR support is fake. No need for me to upgrade anytime soon unless I eventually get a nice OLED.
