So excited for WWDC23. I'm speechless and don't know what to say about it anymore.

I wonder if this is going to be the last time seeing this AR/VR Headset Render. Believe it or not we have come a very long way. Ready to see an actual thing!
Get your diaper ready. Sounds like you might let loose any moment now.

It’s incredibly unimaginative to think that none of the thousands of engineers who work at apple, some of which surely have knowledge of video editing and graphic design, have never once considered this problem. I genuinely do not get how you find it impossible for there to be any solution. Especially considering desktop publishing and video editing are some of the only markets Apple actually has any kind of hold over. I’m sure they plan to totally drop those markets on their device in search of niches over a mid tier problem.

Again, clearly you’ve never had to calibrate a monitor for mission critical prepress operations.

So eyestrain only counts when it’s on a new product category and it’s fine and actually doesn’t matter at all if it’s on an iPhone or Mac? Got it. That one sure holds water.
Not even close to anything I said. First you falsely accused me of looking at my phone too much. Now you’re claiming I’m holding different screens to different standards. That’s also false. Stick to what I said or don’t bother replying. Straw men aren’t an argument.

In a world where AI is looking like it can actually make a computer do work for me, I wonder how VR can be used to actually get things done that isn't a gimmick. With a 360 degree canvas, using that to organize things might be useful. But will it also be disorienting? Again, would be happier with an AI solution that takes care of the problem for me. And I wont be spending $3,000 to play games mostly. It has to do something better than all the devices I could buy instead.

Apple saw a demand for it when they concurrently had a iMac 27" + iMac Pro.
I didn't mean that there isn't demand for it...I wanted a new 27" iMac in 2022, but was given the Studio instead. When I say "no one is waiting" for it, I just mean that I think most have accepted the fact that Apple doesn't see a need for it in the lineup.

Apparently you do not consider Apple's SoC or Apple's Unified Memory Architecture or Apple's coming headset innovative. I do.
No, I don't. Not at all. Significant innovation requires vision. Evolving products and technologies in parallel with everyone else is not innovation. Everyone and their brother has been working on a VR headset for at least a decade. I'm sure Apple will have their own features that are cool, but it's not innovation. Creating a touchsceen mobile phone/internet browser/music player when no one was even considering such a thing was innovative. Creating a tablet that was compelling in a way no other tablet even approached was innovative.
Tech updates and new products that follow where the market is going do not equal innovation.

Looking forward to Apple Classical finally being on IPad and Macs. MacOS Diablo* maybe, from on top you can see one of the best views anywhere in the 48 states.

*The Mt. Diablo state park is one of possible names registered by Apple.

Your voice lulled me to sleep there for a bit, Diablo would be a good name, though I’m hoping they go with Weed one of these years just for laughs.

As a go back to school, there is no way I’ll be able to afford the headset if the rumors of it being $3000 are true but I’m still excited to see what Apple has in stores.

No new Studio, maybe processor upgrade, doubt it. New Mac Pro's. Apple buying Lucid and we now have the Apple Car.

I'm not interested in the headset at least not until we are a few gens in and the price is not insane.

Still it feels like we could be about to witness a major point in Apple's journey. It feels kinda like the build up to the iPhone or iPad...or Apple Watch.

Hopefully the headset is successful. If it is then it could totally change the world just like how iPhone transformed the way we interact with technology. Instead of everyone walking about looking down at their phones they will be walking about with headsets.

Then why have they never provided a calibration solution for any of their monitors? I really don't think you understand prepress and film/video production. Nothing wrong with that. Just own it and stop arguing. There's no chance the headset will be able to be calibrated to the same extent that one can calibrate a high end monitor. The whole virtual monitor use case isn't going to sell headsets to the masses anyway, so who cares?

Good lord. There's a huge difference between constant eye strain caused by a screen that is millimeters away from your eyeball --- and from which you cannot look away --- and eye strain caused by a laptop or phone. The reasons are so obvious. When I'm on my laptop, I look away from the screen frequently. I glance down at the keyboard. I look around the room. Quick glances. It's basically automatic. I don't even think about it. There's no option to take a quick break when you have goggles on your face, other than to close your eyes.

I have not followed all of the updates, but I have been waiting / am in the market to buy the new 15" MBA. I'm confused why the rumors are still stating that it's expected to release with the M2. Can they not get the M2 Pro or M2 Max in there to justify the upsell?
The M2 Pro uses twice the power and thus generates twice the heat. It isn't going to pop into a design without active cooling - unless it is heavily throttled, at which point you just increased the price for basically nothing.

Seems like a jab at consumers since we know the M2 is a year old and next year's MBA update would probably align both the 13" and 15" to the same chip... o_O
Being a year old doesn't make it run cooler.

If they launch the 15" with the M2 they will have already aligned the 13" and 15".

As of now, I actually only care about what's next for MacOS. I hope it gets some love, cause the last few years it has been kind of neglected. And the Mac is the foundation of everything. I mean, what's the name of this website? Without the Mac, I don't even know if I'd be staying in this ecosystem.
Are you including the UI redesign, release of MacOS 11, a port to an entirely new CPU architecture and the ability to run iPhone/iPad apps as signs of neglect?

There's no chance the headset will be able to be calibrated to the same extent that one can calibrate a high end monitor.
It's possible that the headset won't have firmware support that lets users apply more complex calibrations. But being a VR headset doesn't really have any bearing on whether or not Apple chooses to support that capability.
That said, there would be some issues with using a VR headset as a mastering monitor, primarily that the lenses will have internal reflections that introduce glare, which lowers contrast.
caused by a screen that is millimeters away from your eyeball
The physical distance of the screen is irrelevant.
There's no option to take a quick break when you have goggles on your face, other than to close your eyes.
That's pretty much a description of watching a movie at the theater.

So while I agree there won't be a 120Hz screen on the new 15" Air, another common refresh rate is 90Hz.

Could it be possible Apple would do a 90Hz screen in the 15" Air? Probably not as they'd have to charge more (massive margins, not that 90Hz screens cost that much more) and they are already dangerously close to pricing of a 14" MBP.
I'd expect a 15" M2 Air to be a 15" version of the 13" M2 Air, just like the 16" pro is a 16" version of the 14" Pro.

Slightly higher CPU performance because of more surface area for passive cooling, more battery, graphics performance takes a hit because of the larger screen, possibly better sound because of more speaker space.

I'd literally expect it to be the same panel tech, cut to a different size.

Yet it’s clear that these pre-recorded videos are less risky, there are no gaffes or gasps when a high price is revealed, no demonstrations that can go wrong, everything’s polished and dull and boring.
Not just less risky; they can fit a lot more content in via editing. We already see things like AI assistive tech and pro apps on the iPad coming out in the weeks before because they know they won't have enough time.
